I don’t remember much about his recruitment except for the thread in the RF a couple years ago. What’s funny is that Stoops has struggled mightily in landing a solid QB and he finally lands one the year he probably gets fired.Correct me if I am wrong but we ended up taking Merk over Boley. Boley was on campus several times and at one point we thought he was our guy.
The 71 yard TD were five DBs couldn’t force the WR out of bounds was inexcusable. The highs and lows of the defensive play are truly mind boggling.KY's WR's played really well. Honestly i'm not sure what else we could have done. Boley made some plays. This is still an SEC offense.
There were busts, bad angles, and most importantly DL didnt play well. Cant get off blocks.
Is it? Not being a dick. But my followup comment is. You dont recruit HS safeties, you let one walk to Miami, & two porthole cycles with jack ****.The 71 yard TD were five DBs couldn’t force the WR out of bounds was inexcusable. The highs and lows of the defensive play are truly mind boggling.
I don’t think you are being a dick and those are valid points. Is it? Not being a dick. But my followup question is. You dont recruit HS safeties, you let one walk to Miami, & two porthole cycles with jack ****.
The secondary recruiting is poo. Now we may have young talent but they refuse to play them.
I have been imagining that since it became apparent just how bad this defense really is and wasn't going to get any better...I don't know if we could have won seven games. If you really want to have a panic attack imagine this team with Nico at quarterback. We might not be bowl eligible. Joey and our offense give us a chance in every game but it’s hard to win out with every game a shootout. Not sure how our defense can be this bad but they are horrible.
Vandy is going to beat usLet’s take a quick look at our secondary:
Colton Hood rated as a 3* recruit and 3* transfer. He had one start on that vaunted Colorado defense.
Ty Redmond 3* true freshman
Jalen Mcmurray low rated 3* transfer from temple 2* high school recruit. He was not a stud at Temple.
Andre Turrentine: low four star high school recruit and 3* transfer that never saw the field at ohio state and was passed over by other recruits
Boo Carter: By far our highest rated secondary player but he has a horrible attitude and looks like he is giving half effort most of the time.
Edrees Farooq: mid 3* safety, first year starting
We need to put some money into our back end on defense. This secondary is a liability and couple that with the slight regression along the defensive line and this is the defense that you get.
I’m ok with moving on from Banks and getting a new voice/ideas in that room. Up until now, the complaints hadn’t matched what he had accomplished. Go Vols and figure it out enough to beat Ok, Florida, and Vandy. Especially Vandy, we can’t lose to those idiots.
Maybe Banks needs to go, maybe not. Seems like the DL is doing just fine. The Secondary has been banged up all season long. Linebackers have been okay, Telander looked good last night. Arion Carter was held out. Lotsa variables, but no doubt, we are something like 105th ranked in scoring defense. Now that I’m much calmer, I still think Banks needs to go
I’m to the point with him that I ultimately got with Dooley, Jones and Pruitt. I have a lot of patience for coaches. But he’s had over four years. This year’s defense has all the bad tendencies of the pre-2024 defenses, and it has not improved as the year has gone on.
We have a playoff caliber offense that has shown it can move the ball on anyone.
Remains to be seen if we can scratch together just enough defense to get there.

Furing Heupel will be monumentally stupid.Spot on.
This team is a few secondary players away from being undefeated and a top 3 ranking. Which is the problem. We are five years in and there is zippo development in that area along with a DC who cannot get his players to understand how to play and execute zone coverages the whole time he has been here. They are Sunseri D level bad even with Hood locking down one side. Hood came in at the elite level - this staff gets no credit for his performance other than starting him. All the other OC's have to do is isolate Redmond and Boo while throwing crossings and digs underneath our pitiful safeties and behind our LB's who cannot cover either. Too often they cover nobody and just react to where the ball is thrown.
Even being bad in coverage, if they would just tackle well they could minimize the damage and occasionally force FG's instead of TD's. But they cannot even do that. They have NO eye discipline at all. They fall for eye candy, gimmicks and schemes like bad high schoolers.
Add in there is no point in having LB's stand around and then try to tackle a receiver while never having one spy a QB that can run, which is about 90+% of them now days. The only things we do well on D is pass rush and clamp down on the run when Banks has enough sense to go 4 DL and keep 6 in the box, which is not all that often. There are times now that he moves the LB's outside and only has 4 in the box. That makes them no good at stopping anything.
Having two elite CB's with a third in the wings in Hood before the injuries helped hide the weaknesses at safety and nickel with Boo in the game. All of the OC's know the answers Banks has for it now.
If there is no change in the weak links in the defensive coaching staff after this season, Heup will not be around much longer and that would be a shame because he is a master at offense. But he needs to man up as a HC and make the tough calls for the betterment of the program.
