Tennessee Total Defense By Year

Our defense would look night and day different with Carter, McCoy, and Gibson on the field.

I’d give Banks another year, but I’d absolutely make a change in the secondary. It’s clear they are not being coached.

Banks coaches half the secondary

In past years the defensive woes could be blamed on the offense going so fast. That's not the case this season although the offense does put the defense in some bad positions. I don't know exactly what it is but this defense is trash.
The defense played 36 minutes tonight…it wasn’t until the last drive that our offense ran clock. But with Heupel we’re always going to try to have an uptempo high scoring offense…

I haven't been on the "changes need to be made" wagon until tonight.

We let a FRESHMAN 3RD STRING QB at KENTUCKY convert 3rd and LONG multiple times in ONE drive...that TD is inexcusable...period.
Other teams are figuring us out more and more each week and our defense isn’t improving enough to keep up.

That works both ways. If the defense gets stops, our offense has the ball longer.

You know how the defense can change that? Get off the field on 3rd down

Another opposing qb with a career night. Just stop blaming missing corners please. Mizzou, Vandy, SC, Louisville and about 100 others have lesser talent and are missing players too.
3 90+ yard drives and several more from 75 yards in 2 games is embarrassing.
Somebody please just tell him he can blitz without sending everybody allowing opponents tmove their matchup to Boo in the slot. It’s child’s play against Banks

Only 2 times in 11 years did the Vols break into the top 20 in total defense? Did not realize it’s been that bad. Depressing.

Nope. Banks gets credit for being elite for a couple years.
2024, yes. But 37/130 (28th percentile) and 22/130 (17th) are elite? With 130 (now 134) FBS teams, I would think "elite" is top 10% at worst, and more towards top 5%.

Banks gets credit for 2024. Defense was elite.

He also gets "credit" for when it's not. Fair is fair.

Edit: Just out of curiosity...I'm too tired and lazy at this point in the day... what are the numbers for the other P4 teams that made the CFP last year over that same time span?

I didn't check, but I have a feeling that Banks is not going to look "elite" when you make that comparison.

When asking if a defense is or is not elite, total yards is by far the most ignorant of all stats to look at

Last year’s defense was very good, but not as good as their numbers. They had the good fortune of playing some terrible offenses, especially passing offenses.

Agreed, to a point. Those yards add up. I just went with the format the poster chose.

The poster picked a poor format. When your offense is scoring fast, you’re going to be on the field a lot. Points per possession is the most important defensive stat by far.

I’m using AI for this data so it may be off slightly. But if you are giving up less than 20 and have an offense that plays fast, I’d call that elite.
