The Official Tennessee Baseball Skipper Search Thread

I think Schnall did a great job last year, but his resume is near identical to Elander with the exception of 1 year of head coaching experience. They had a very favorable path to the CWS as well, so I’m not sold that he can do that repeatedly which is now the standard here at Tennessee.
Agree. Seems like mirror images. The difference to me is we know Elander knows the SEC and is capable of recruiting to Tennessee. There's always more to something than you see from the outside but this just seems so obvious to me.

If DW goes rogue and hires a failure coach that is on him. Blowing up a CWS team is so dumb for no reason but arrogance.
I think that is why he will pick Ellander. So many are hehind Ellander that there will too much pressure to risk failure. He might surprise me but he was very nervous in his presser so he has to be feeling the pressure. Glad to see he started interviewing so quickly because the kids need to know the future.

There’s a reason why the model has been guys with SEC experience and at minimum one of the higher level ACC programs (Corbs & Sully Clemson). Butch Thompson, Andy Cannizzaro, Brad Bohannon, Nick Mingione, Tony Vitello, Wes Johnson, Mike Bianco, John Cohen; all former SEC assistants and/or HC’s at other schools prior to getting a SEC HC (or new SEC HC) gig. Obviously some of those guys are no longer in the league but none of their departures had anything to with on the field stuff, all were successful at the job of coaching. Elander fits the mold of what has been successful in this league and he’s experienced more success as an assistant than any of those other guys did. It’s a layup hire in that it makes complete sense, EVERYONE thinks he’ll be successful and if he’s not, nobody blames DW.

I agree with everything but the last point. If Elander flops the natural conclusion would be DW should’ve hired a proven winner at a time when Tennessee baseball was elite. After all.. “that’s what his job is”. Hindsight is a powerful thing. I doN’t envy DW in having to make this decision. Or any HC hire for that matter. Much goes into it.

He did the player council with the football and Lady Vol hire as well. I know you and everybody associated with the baseball program hates DW and think he’s done nothing for the program. However, how about we see who gets hires before kicking him to the curb.
I think it should be a big eye opener that people close to the baseball program don’t have good things to say about Danny white. I don’t think I’ll ever like the man again, but we need to win more in football and women’s basketball needs to do better than a sweet sixteen. Aslong as those things happen you can have your money hungry AD. I won’t complain. But absolutely football and women’s basketball needs to be better for this man to continue price gouging the fans and shoving corporations down everyone’s throats. I don’t think people realize the thin line this man is tip toeing on

I think it’s an over emotional response to simply say hire Josh Elander. I am not sure that’s a smart decision.

While Tony Vitello is a winner has he produced a coach that has gone out and had success elsewhere? Hiring within is risky unless that assistant coach handled the day to day. Tony was young, energetic, and not sure Anderson nor Elander has that experience.

Kevin Schall for example did. He worked under a legendary coach, left, came back as assistant head coach and ultimately ran the program for an aging icon in Gilmore. Gilmore won his first championship when Schall returned in that role. He showed his worth when Gilmore stepped down. Coastal had their best record ever and made the final.

In my business you can easily see when it’s time to promote because the manager and DM will inform you if the AM has been running the show. We could do worse than Elander but not considering other coaches with high pedigrees and a job attracting National interest is stupid. Also, Elander and Anderson could benefit tremendously from working under a different manager. It’s great exposure for their future careers.

Thanks to Tony for everything. He has elevated this job to one where proven winners want it!

DW needs to realize he is not the smartest guy in room. Don’t make things difficult here. Hire Elander.

Elander also worked under Schloss and Van Horn. I know he’s considered Tony’s guy, but he’s worked under a trio of proven winners. There’s a pretty long track record of longtime assistants stepping up and having a lot of success. I don’t hate DW’s perceived candidates, but it’s a really inconvenient time of the year to be conducting a search. Regardless of how I feel about how all of this went down, it’s an extremely difficult position for DW considering the magnitude of what the hire means.

You think a new coach will keep Elander and Anderson - I don't. A new coach always wants to bring their own.

Thanks for that. Like I said I love Elander and maybe he’s the choice, but limiting options and especially fantastic ones is not smart business.

I don’t think there’s a fan or former player who will be mad at DW if E was given a shot and didn’t pan out when we’re all clamoring for him. There are no proven winners out there that are willing to come that understand what it takes to succeed in this league and at this program in particular. Serrano was a HR hire on paper and left a true blue blood baseball program for us and it just didn’t work out. It’s still baffling that it didn’t but not a person in the college baseball world expected that to go as poorly as it did. There’s a recipe for success in this league and not everyone gets it.

So I don’t think he is horrible so don’t attack me. I was just stating facts. I’ve never said anything bad about him. My only problem with him is his lack of relationship with coaches and players and fans but that is his personality. I’ve seen the same at HS level and usually doesn’t work out. I believe life is about relationships. So how about get to know me before you make a judgement about what I feel. All I care about is success and how my son is treated

For being a member on this site for 4 years you should realize by now that people will be mad at Danny White if Elander isn’t a winner no matter what people think in the here and now.

Their anger may not be directed towards DW for hiring Elander, but I guarantee you if Elander isn’t a winner here then people will just revert back to being mad at DW for letting TV go.

I just don’t hug the narrative that has been spread that DW hasn’t supported the baseball program. Vitello said it himself last year that no school was more invested into their baseball program than Tennessee. I guess that was a lie.

You think a new person could tremendously benefit Anderson‘s future career and give him great exposure?

I mean Tennessee is building a 100 million dollar stadium and yet some people still want to say DW isn’t invested.

My take is that Tony Vitello is beloved by volnation and no one wants to be mad at Tony for leaving so they have to justify their hate over the situation and make someone out to be the source of their anger aka DW. When in reality Tony made a “selfish” decision and chose to go to the big leagues.

It wasn’t a lie last year. The dynamic changed this year with the new revenue share.
Once that went in to effect, other schools have invested more and Tony’s statement was no longer true.
