The Official Tennessee Baseball Skipper Search Thread

Kendall Rogers on Kevin Schnall (incorrectly stated): He was an assistant at UCF for two years overlapping when DW was the AD there.

Before people get too excited about that possible connection - Danny Dimes pointed out in his press conference this week that he doesn't get chummy with assistant coaches.

The minute you lose someone like this is the minute the vultures circle and take your talent off the field.

I believe White will quickly find a quality replacement for Vitello. As WaywardVol said above, there is too much money vested in that stadium and this program for him to leave it resting in interim purgatory.
Yes and doing his due diligence takes time. The very thing we don’t want to give him.

Do you have a link to this quote? It should be somewhere if he said it. That's a pretty strong statement from an athletic director.
lmao He said it in either '92 or '93 while speaking to the POTS Band of which I was a member. So no, I don't have a link, but I know what was said.

I'm curious to know what other sports you feel we made "great strides" in under Dickey.

He was the AD from 1985 to 2002 .... Just off the top of my head :

During that time, Tennessee made it to the College World Series in baseball in 1995 and 2001. Rod Delmonico was Dickey's hire.

Tennessee also won the Men's Outdoor Track & Field National Championship in 1991 and 2001.

There is a balance to be struck here. Take time? Yes.

Take too much time? How many recruits are we willing to lose in a conference and region loaded with strong coaches and programs seeking talent anywhere they can get it?

You know as soon as the Tony news broke, phones started ringing.

No he didn’t, Schnall left in 2015, DW was hired in 2015.

At the end of the day coaching, not being baseball specific here, is a people business. How you treat the kids, how you treat their parents, how you treat the media, etc…It’s all about people. Tony was a master, might even be the strongest characteristic. Having an eye for talent is also a people skill and motivating most certainly is. No doubt.

So is loyalty. The guys remaining on the staff, assuming White wants them to stick around, have earned the right to have a say.

GBO!!!

The University President (Joe Johnson) always said that the football program is the front porch of the university.

Not quite the same, but yeah........30-40 years ago, the Vols thought that way.

Plus, we had Lady Vols basketball championships...eight I think.

If you like the direction the program is in, then elevating the top assistant to the head coaching job is one way to make certain it stays as close to what Vitello left behind as possible.

It has other benefits as well, especially in the area of recruiting. With that seal of approval from the AD, Elander could mount an effective campaign to keep the personnel base at an elite level.

From White's perspective, it gives him the chance to move on having done what Tennessee's baseball people want him to do.

Makes too much sense...unless you wish to head in another direction.

I think I’ve been clear, but I also know I control nothing.

DW is going to so mess this up - wrong hire, players bail and this coming season will be a struggle. Right hire, players stay and success continues.

There is absolutely no reason for him to not promote from within - give it a year and if things go south, start the search when there is time for a new coach to recruit players.

This is the same attitude of Josh Heupel did the right thing by letting Nico walk. It doesn’t matter if Tennessee regresses this year, no one is bigger than the T…..then comes the Alabama game and half our fan base wants Josh fired or someone else fired.

DW could make the hire everyone loves or everyone hates but at the end of the day it comes down to winning games. Only time will tell if he makes the right hire, not our feelings about it in the present.

CTV wouldn’t have been loved like he is if he didn’t win games, the same will go for Elander or anyone else DW hires.

If DW picks E with all the support he has from players and fans he has a bit of a fall back if it doesn't work out. If he goes rogue and it doesn't work it is all on him. Going thru the interview process and then naming E the coach could give E a stronger perceived starting point. Gotta wrap it up fast!

See post above..

There is no fall back ever. You win or you lose period.
