IMO TV wanted to stay. He needed UT/DW to come to the table with something substantial to keep him - not just about his own pay, but more as an organization inside of UTAD, including NIL, coaches pay, control, etc.
DW and the UTAD either felt TV wouldn't leave (which is dumb) or they could replace him (might be right, but HUGE risk).
I think the delay in TV taking the gig was really him trying to stay. That is my take. I don't think DW came to the table with enough and TV finally had to make a call.
I think Low is right, I think this could have been avoided.
I have to take exception with you on this one. Ultimately it is business for both parties. It might not be to us but is business to them. Not many people would pass up a dream job out of loyalty to their current employer, just as if TV was losing UT wouldn't hang on to him forever out of loyalty.I'm a Vol...unlike Tony...until I die. He left us in a lurch...so screw him. "You're either a Vol or You're not!"...using his own words against him here..HE IS NOT.
Now he will fail in this silly Guants experimental endeavor and then come back to the SEC at another school and further twist the knife in our collective guts.
If you aren't upset...so what...I am and screw everybody that don't like it. I took him at his word, I actually believed that he wanted to leave a Neyland type legacy at UT...I was fooled by his seeming sincerity.
You're either a Vol..or you're not...I am and he ain't.
Well said Jack. This is just a creative way for people that don't like Danny White to cast stones his way. Danny isn't perfect and I am sure made some mistakes but blaming him 100% for this is just nonsense. I wish the people that are trying to make a story about this could see that the narrative they are pushing is only hurting the program and university that they supposedly love. What is the purpose and benefit of just beating this horse to death outside of getting shots in on an athletic director that they clearly don't like. I get that everything is more expensive and the common fan has been priced out of going to games but is that really the AD's fault? If he didn't do that we wouldn't be competitive and he would be fired. Tickets were very cheap in our 15-20 years of disfunction because we sucked. The reality is that Tony was the second highest paid coach in the NCAA, had a new $100+ million renovated stadium and resources in the top 5 to compete at the highest level. He chose to leave. You are either a Vol or not. Time to move on and support those who chose to be Vols.I think you're both right. Absolutely think he wrestled with the idea, think he loved his team. But ultimately its business. I def think he made some demands. What does it matter that DW didnt meet them? He has a AD to run.
No one forced TV to go to Giants. He chose that. Its the MLB. He made the right decision.
Moving on.
How do you know we aren’t washing that money to do that anyway?Ironically, the several hundred thousand dollars he’ll use to line the pockets of useless search firms could have been re-allocated to the baseball program through some smart accounting and have been a piece of the solution to keep Tony. Instead, we’ll give that money to some suits to tell us the answer we all know and aren’t being paid for…
This is hilarious to me.
Hal is one of Florida's most-influential boosters. Can you imagine Jimmy Haslam back in the day publicly weighing in on a coaching search?
Drinkwitz has the same record as Lane over the past 3 seasons. Both of those programs have deeper resources than are available at Florida. I doubt anyone informed would seriously predict either Kiffin or Drink would take that job. Some people without anyone paying them to opine, have suggested it's downright ludicrous. They do believe Lane/Sexton are trying to create the most leverage they can and that happens AFTER Ole Miss makes the playoffs-not before.
It is truly amazing, some of these reactions are unhinged. I mean I taking TV' decision personally and treating it as if TV slapped their woman or shot their dog. I mean don't these people understand what an unprecedented and historical opportunity TV has been offered. Yeah he probably never buy a drink or a meal in the state again but i doubt too many people would pass up the opportunity to be the first coach to win a CBB Championship and a World Series. It’s you bozos that have a view point of “just let a national championship coach walk” that just sounds stupid every time you open your mouth. Danny white didn’t let anyone “walk”. That was Tony Vs choice. He’s going to the MLB. It’s the only job he would have left here for. There was realistically not a thing Danny White could have done to keep Tony Vitello. Not. A. Single. Thing. No AD on this planet is keeping their coach if an MLB franchise came calling. Tony Vitello isn’t leaving because of some BS rumor about money that was supposed to go to baseball going to women’s basketball. Quit believing dumb ****. Yes women’s basketball gets more share, that’s common sense. But from a NIL perspective, Tennessee baseball gets more NIL dedicated to it than 99.9% of college baseball programs. That’s just facts. Did Tony V want more? I’m sure he did, you need to always want more. That’s not why Tony took an MLB job though, if you think that’s you are beyond delusional.
Just to throw this on how hard it is to win a championship the FSU run at the college world series 20 appearance no ships . It's a tough job and only one coach and team a year has the Honor.Also...Karen Weekly is pretty damn ride or die, and just signed her own "lifetime contract"
20+ years as HC and almost every post season they exit early folks are "ready to move on" so I can't blame coaches with how damn fickle fans are if I'm honest.
Tony wanted to be a MLB manager and now he's got his shot. I actually think "less control" might be part of what he was interested in, the focus really gets to be on players/game. Doesn't have to play recruiter 24/7, doesn't have to negotiate NIL or be involved...I mean even here Elander was the Recruiting Coordinator seemed like Tony hired guys that he could let kind of handle things why he focused on ball so maybe MLB manager is what he's really desired all along.
