DW press conference

What is wrong with some of you people? I just watched DW's press conference and saw nothing whatsoever that should be viewed as a negative, and I certainly didn't hear him whining about anything. I'm not sure what some of you are looking for. I also think many of you place too much faith in the rumor mill of false information that's been floating around for the past week or so.

First and foremost, CTV doesn't owe us anything. We should be grateful to have had him for the period he has been here and for the level of success to which he has pushed the program. I get it that some of you are butthurt that "he's leaving us" but get over yourselves. While we can be disappointed that he's leaving, how proud should we be that he is doing it because his success has granted him the opportunity to do something THAT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE! Let me repeat that - he is doing something THAT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE! What we should all be doing is wishing him luck in this new endeavor because it is almost certain to be a daunting task.

I also listened to what DW said about the financial issues and I didn't hear anything negative there. In fact he said that all 34 roster spots (the limit under the new NCAA guidelines) for the baseball team have full scholarships tied to them. That's considerably different than the 11.7 scholarships they had to divide up among the players prior to the new changes. He also totally shot down the rumor that money was being taken from the baseball program and diverted to the women's programs. The percentages by which the funds have been split up among the programs have been set for some time; the revenue sharing just formalizes part of the process. He said the UT baseball program was as well funded as any college baseball program in the country. Money was never an issue in any of this. This was all about a once-in-a-lifetime, first-time ever, opportunity for CTV because of his success at UT.

As for the "communication" issues some of you deem to have been a problem, DW said Tony had kept him informed throughout the process over the past two weeks, so DW and his staff had been preparing for the possibility that Tony would take the SF job. He talked about naming Frank as the interim acting head coach because the players needed to know who was in charge during this transition, and also because Frank had head coaching experience. He said Josh Elander can focus on preparing his application for the job while continuing to perform his other assigned tasks. He laid out plans for keeping the players informed about the process, and for the coaching search under such unusual circumstances.

While I'm disappointed to lose Tony, I think the program is in a good place to "weather the storm" so many of you seem to think is heading our way. Whatever happens, GBO!!!
How in the hell can someone listen to Danny say that he doesnt talk to his assistant coaches and still think everything is okay. Thats literally part of his job! He let's his lieutenants handle those things? The press conference was bad and that's just the facts. He said some really crazy stuff today. He only talked to Tony once on Saturday and then today. Never in-between! That's a problem! Danny didnt want to keep Tony and thats the bottom line. It should've never gotten this far, but it did. Partly because Danny doesnt have a good relationship with his coaches. He's like a robot. You too will find out in time. I Hope its sooner rather than later!

Danny wants the love for the new stadium and revenue from the fanbase and Tony wants appreciation from his AD. There was no relationship between the two. Whether you love the job Danny White has done or not. Just like any business, your irreplaceable employees or those employees that transform your workplace must know how much they mean to your business financially and through affirmations publicly or privately. This AD is pure business, and the press conference said it all. DW is disconnected from the fanbase and his coaches. I'm not saying fire DW, just feel like that is his deficiency.

1) Danny White gets overly defensive and asks the media very awkwardly who reported that LV Basketball received more Rev share than baseball?
2) He said it was factually inaccurate.
3) He then proceeds to say that LV Basketball received 5% of rev share (which would be $1,025,000)
4) He then says that baseball received $750,000.
5) He totally contradicted himself. Granted it was a marginal $275,000 but LV Baseball received more Rev share than baseball.
6) His numbers seemed off as well. He said baseball was in the “5% others bucket” of $900,000 and that baseball received $750,000 of the 900,000. Total Rev share is $20,500,000 so 5% would be $1,025,000. I’m sure there’s an explanation but not sure how total Rev Share went from $20,500,000 down to $18,000,000 since 5% of $18M is $900K. Was $2.5M part of the “front loading“ of Rev share that was done in the Spring?

I mean, sure. But….

1. You have a national champion coach.

2. He considers leaving.

3. You talk to him once in 5 days.

Justify it. We’ll wait…..
That's easy.
DW: "Tony, thgis is what we are offering.

TV: Crickets

DW: (5 days later) Bye

That's as it should be. DW gets paid to make the hard decisions.

I’m frustrated with DW like everyone else right now, but why would DW have any relationship with any assistant coach on campus? I actually totally understood his reasoning when he mentioned it in the presser

Not sure why everyone is so up in arms that he doesn’t really have a relationship with Elander. That’s not really surprising

Talking to people is how Indiana kept their football coach at Indiana. I sure wish we had an AD like Indiana had. White is a bad fit for this place. It is shocking that he lets his national championship coach, that he did not even hire walk off campus and is too tone deaf and dumb to know that Elander is the clear guy for job.

Where do we start...

1) The first 2 - 3 minutes should have been a tribute to Tony. It was lackluster and immediately went into the money stuff--budget, facilities.
2) Took credit for recruiting
3) Admitted he rarely communicated with his coaches. wtf...
That was a guy trying to do damage control, control the narrative and whether he realized it or not, was trying to deflect blame in a very rushed, poorly executed press conference.
Should he had handled it differently/better? Definitely.
But I don’t fault the guy, he’s human and I’ve learned not to let press conferences sway my judgment, especially one like this where the timing of this whole situation is terrible!!
I do however fault DW for not working directly with his coaches, even his assistant coaches and staffs. That is ridiculous and screams corporate BS.
And IF he literally only talked to coach 1 time in the last 5 days, then nothing else should be debated about that, because we all know that is BS and 100% on DW.

That’s very surprising actually.

^^^

This is one of the more wise things I've read today.

As bad and frustrating as it is...and i hate using corporate speak like this...but its a learning and growth opportunity. We identified a problem in the organization. We don't have to change the org chart to fix it, but some people on that chart could use some recalibration...

Right the ceo usually doesn’t have a close working relationship with the janitor lol

Do people in this thread actually work? Are you best friends with the people you work with? This is a business. Its a job. Performance is very easy to assess based on on the field results. You don’t have to be best friends with everyone at work.

Just about every SEC school is allocating $2.5 mil to create 65 new scholarships.

How do you know he won't hire Josh? You don't. Y'alls irrational hatred for a dude just because your man crush coach left is weird. Josh will take over the team and we 100% won't lose a beat. Y'all are goofy. I REALLY wish Tony would come out and say I wanted to prove myself in the big leagues, that's why I left. I'd love to hear all this cry baby stuff stop.

Your analogy is off bud.

Its more like the CEO of a company having no communication with one of his division leaders thats a direct report.

The CEO doesn't have contact with the Brand Analyst, but they do with the Brand Managers and Chief Marketing Officers

A lot said in few words which makes me believe poster could have credible info. In other words, we are at a correctable moment for DW or DW needs to do some self reflection.
Not that easy when your job is primarily bringing in money and then allocation of funds.
The sugar daddy neglected the bread winner in the room.

Exactly 💯

Well, I hope AD White realizes that attendance from middle age women will be down at baseball games. The ladies say TV was easy to look at. 😁. Best of luck to Coach V in his new gig in MLB. He has reached the highest level of coaching in Baseball, well deserved IMO. Thanks Coach V for the memories. You brought fun and excitement to LNS for all. Go hit a grand slam with the Giants! As for AD White, an occasional email or drop by the office with your coaches can go a long way in building trust and relationship with people. Approachability is a key attribute to successful leaders. Don’t leg the fog(or ego)of the job cloud a necessary life skill in leadership positions. Go Vols!

The only way he hires Elander is if he is pressured. He doesn't want to, if he did he would have done it yesterday.

If you watched what he said and you defend DW, I don't know what to say. He talked to Tony V 1 time in the last 5 days! Disgraceful
Well, that would depend ENTIRELY on what TV said on that 1 call. It is probable that DW had elevated future discussions upstream with difference makers outside his pay grade. With an MLB club all in, and the length of the fight so indicates, no rational response may have been available. Making history can be really appealing. Will wish him well.

When that janitor is often times making 6 figures you do.
When you don’t want to lose valuable employees you do.
When all your are concerned with is bottom line, you don’t.
To compare this to an every day corporation is silly and tells me everything I need to know about “corporate America” and why a lot businesses are struggling.

Some of you have brain damage. You want us to bring back Fulmer as AD. Y'all want to run off the best AD in the country. Absolutely pathetic.
What makes you think he's the best AD in the country? Our 2 best coaches were not his hires. All he had to do was try his best to keep Tony V and he didn't. Also he raised ticket prices on the common fan. I have talked with him at least 3 times, not impressed. He stumbled and bumbled at yesterday press conference. He is good, but not the best.

Is it common for ADs to meet regularly with assistant coaches across all sports? That seems like a lot, but I can’t say I really know what the norm is there.
