Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

I could name 15 right off the top of head. One that doesn’t shat the bed under pressure all too often, one that gets us to Championship games at some level while I’m still alive to see it. Saban, Myer, Smart, Spurrier all played for Championships in 3 years or less. Lanning is doing the same, Cignetti has Indiana of all places in the top 4 in year 2, was in the playoffs in year 1. DeBoer had Washington in championship form in 2 years. How many should we give Hype before we think he can’t do it? Championship level coaches almost always show their worth early on. Hype is a good coach that has stabilized the program and deserves a ton of credit for that, but can he take it to the next level? If the stated goal by Danny White is to play for and win championships, how long is long enough to wait for that opportunity?
Saban
Myer
Smart
Spurrier
Lanning
Cignetti
DeBoer

looks like 7 and all are unobtainium ... want to add Neyland, Bryant, and Wilkinson to the list?

I’d be all for being in the playoffs 75% of the time, that would mean you more than likely had an opportunity or 2 or 3 or more to play for the conference title. Totally acceptable for me.
Now we are cooking. I think us, Bama, UGA, LSU, and Florida should have that expectation. We had to build to it.

Of those listed how many took over a program with scholarship restrictions and a NCAA investigation hanging over its head? None. You are too smart for this nonsense

Bama was at its lowest point in forever when Saban took over. Florida is the weakest they’ve been in decades and just fired their coach, Hype was just 2-2 and just a couple of plays away from being a ghastly 0-4 against Napier. Hype is 0-5 against Smart with the best home field advantage in the world. I just call em like I see em brother. It is what it is.

You call them with bs eyes. Saban was NC before Bama. And 2-2 is the record against Florida. Your 0-4 is nonsense. You bringing it up shows the bias

You do you and I’ll do me, I see what I see. Optimism is certainly a route that can be taken and with some reason. Hope what you see in the Hype works out for us, I see better than average. Certainly not my call in any form or fashion and it’s really meaningless in the grand scheme of things, but I have always strived for more than better than average in anything and everything I do. Always always reaching for more, acceptance of nothing less than the best I can do or be or obtain, it’s served me well over my lifetime. If TN can do better, then they should strive to do so. Hype is the guy before the guy, good, but not elite. Just how I see it. Pretty sure he’s going to be around for at least a few more years to prove one of us right.

It's pretty simple. In January of 2021 we fired Pruitt and Fulmer resigned. We were at what appeared to be the abyss. If on February 1st of 2021 I came to you from the future and said the coach we hired has had two top ten seasons, made the playoffs, beaten bama twice, beaten Clemson, beaten LSU on the road, beaten Florida twice, and is recruiting at his highest level ever in year five. But oh he lost a close one to UGA at home and lost to Bama on the road, 99% of the people on this board would have been tripping over their dick to sign up for that. That's what CJH has done. Perspective people

He's way out performed expectations

Sounds like a precipice.

Not pissy, I quit getting pissy about TN football about a decade and a half ago, just pointing out that I think we should be better, just more to rant and start the topic of conversation on the subject than anything.

I do however take losses to Bama sorta pissy I reckon.
This is why you're one of my faves.
"Not pissy.....sorta pissy". 😆

My best win at home was 89 vs Auburn (payback for 88 disaster... 89 was a fun year). I had seats in the dry end zone (north) where Reggie took it to the house.... maybe the best except for the 82 game vs the gumps or another one that will come to mind like the 92 gators Mose Phillips raining so hard I cant see the field game lol
My best was 2016 Florida. Miserably hot. Miserable 1st half. Second half shade and domination. WIN!

Time will tell. I don’t see him winning anything of significance ever, too many negatives that I’ve seen on game days, but I’d love to be proven wrong and will gladly tell VN and the world that I was.

Just out of curiosity, how many years should we be content to build, to not ever play in a conference title game? if not 4 then not 5 is it 6? if not 6 then 7? if not 7 then 8? if not 8 then 9? What do you consider acceptable here?
Its6super easy to be a pessimist though. Nobody cares if your opinion was proven wrong.
There are currently 3 or 4 national championship coaches coaching right now. The odds he won't win a natty are much higher than he will.
Dont know why youre asking for a timeline, You're discontent after 5 years of building. Each year is a new year I the new era of ncaa football. At least, thats how I see it. Our recruiting improves each year. That's about all I can ask for.

Good on IU. UT was number 1 in 2022 for one week, too

I’d gladly take any of those in a hot minute.
Kiffin has essentially same record as CJH. Never competed for championships. Never even been in playoffs.
None of the others have either, yet. All really good coaches.

CJH was undefeated at this point of year 2
Lea is 1-1 vs gumps with debord. CJH was 1-1 vs the gumps with saben
Kiffy ... I recall a rather unsavory departure and not sure what the fan reaction would be if he was to return

They are all winners that have built programs into contenders in a short amount of time.
Yes. Exactly what Heup has done too.

This is a grass is greener pov bc you don't follow those closely. For example, Smart is best coach rn. Can't get over the 'Bama hump' and almost lost to GA tech (8 overtimes). We have a uga hump and have almost lost games. End results are better at uga though.

Guess I’m just not as optimistic as some with what I see. It happens. Hopefully the Hype proves me hopelessly wrong. I’m all for eating my crow if it happens.
Nah bro. Crow ain't gonna cut it. We request you host us for a meat fest (like the pic you posted a while back) before we convoy to the national championship game.
