I just don't understand that mindset. When it comes to recruiting in every sport, you will lose players. Other schools may have different priorities for certain players.I would be willing to bet TV lost out on some players because of lack of resources. I'm sure that doesn't sit well. You can't expect your coaches to be 100% in when you are 90% in.
I doubt if he gets much of leash. It's not like he's going to bottom feeding college team and will have a few years to right the ship. It's all business in the MLB and they are kinda taking a flyer on Tony. With no pro experience he can lose confidence fast and would be easy to cut loose. And not just to any MLB team - he went to maybe the most storied MLB franchise, in one of the premier US cities, with one of the most iconic stadiums in pro sports, and it’s a time where it will be fairly low pressure on him to win immediately. This is a no brainer decision for him, it doesn’t compute to me how people are mad at DW or TV over this. It would’ve been like Pearl leaving for the Boston Celtics or Heupel leaving for the Patriots, except with much less immediate pressure to win. It’s a dream situation for TV and one that no one with a brain would pass up.
I'm just a little surprised TV would leave given the 'historic recruiting classes' he has coming to Knoxville. Not to mention that the big jump to the MLB is frought with hazards. He could flame out fast.
Chris Lowe is historically credible. He is now apparently reporting that DW for some time, has rarely spoken to CTV. If that is true; then DW handled this poorly. If it's not true, then maybe he hasn't.Did he? He gave him money and facilities. He left him alone even when maybe they didn't like each other very much. Truth is we don't (and likely won't) know what Tony's motivation for leaving is, but there is nothing beyond rumors to suggest that DW failed. Again...he left to be the only college coach in history to become the manager of a MLB team. DW has no counter for that, unless the answer was to keep throwing money at him until he couldn't say no.
The entire fan response is assuming that Tony wanted to be here and that it was in DW's power to keep him. That is a huge assumption. If he really was almost out the door to TAMU last year (which might have been the friction) and interviewing at SF this year, what should DW do? Pay him even more and beg him to stay? There's a point that good leadership recognizes that it can't or won't be fixed and the best thing is to move on.I didn’t think so until:
- Burke and Rogers insinuated DW helped pack Tony’s bags; and
- we got word that Elander most likely won’t be the hire.
Again, no reason to fire the guy, but it looks like he made a big mistake. I’m not gonna lie to myself to cover for him.

Realistically there isn’t anything material to be lost in this gamble by TV. Either he succeeds in the MLB - a dream for all baseball people, or he fails and is the hottest name available in college baseball in a couple years. Although coaches aren’t typically wired this way, he could even decide to retire early.I'm just a little surprised TV would leave given the 'historic recruiting classes' he has coming to Knoxville. A vast majority of baseball programs aren't profitable. One issue at UT was stadium size. You will see some profitable programs at LSU, MSU, and Ole Miss, in part, because their stadoum capacity is at least 10k.I'm just going to say one thing: It's some very suspicious bookeeping that leads to Tennessee not being profitable in baseball. Perhaps it's directly related to the ESPN media deal, but I don't believe that.
DW couldn't offer him a position as Major League manager. It was the chance to coach in the Bigs, I really doubt it was about NIL money or salary.Doesn’t matter when your boss is doing dumb s** like that to protect his own hire. Tony earned everything it should have never been touched period! Part of Danny’s job is helping with NIL.if he felt like they needed more then he should have gotten off his ass and talk to donors.I don’t blame Tony at all.
I chose 90% as an arbitrary number becuase it shows the university was willing to significantly invest in a non-revenue sport, that being TN Baseball. If other schools you are competing with have more resources/more money, that does put you at a disadvantage. If the reports are true, that the AD took money from baseball to give to LV basketball, the AD is choosing to take resources away. In your mindset, Tony should just deal with it. I have more problems understanding that mindset. We had a national championship winning program and the AD sacrificed resources from that program to another. When you do that you make a decision that they may cause strained relationships and the possibility of losing your coach. You have to be willing to take that risk. You have to think that if I lose this coach, I can replace him with someone equally as good or be prepared to have a less successful program than the last guy. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.I just don't understand that mindset. When it comes to recruiting in every sport, you will lose players. Being 90% in is subjective. Because of his success, we started dumping a bunch more money into the program.
The Dodgers will outspend the Giants, so he is back the same position.
I assume the phone goes both ways. I just think it's silly to assume that DW is the *cause* of the friction. Everyone seems sure that Tony is blameless, DW caused it, and DW didn't fix it. It seems unlikely to me that fault is purely on one side or the other.Chris Lowe is historically credible. He is now apparently reporting that DW for some time, has rarely spoken to CTV. When someone is your direct report and they're doing a good job for the organization, you don't have the option of isolating them. Leaving them alone to do their job is one thing, but isolating from them isn't professional and creates an environment of delayed combustion. It's placing your interests above those of the organization by taking a passive aggressive tact at getting rid of your direct report despite their success.
Not exactly what I was arguing but too long to discuss. You are always going to get uneven support at schools with NIL now. See Texas Tech now.I chose 90% as an arbitrary number becuase it shows the university was willing to significantly invest in a non-revenue sport, that being TN Baseball.
