Absolutely they both have huge egos. Truth of the matter, I know TV wanted nicer facilities but if his perception was lack of resources when it comes to securing the best talent, why hang around? It's about priorities. If you are a great racecar driver, you want to drive the best cars. If other places emphasize it more, what motivation do you have to continue?I am just trying to understand how A&M has shown they would provide more resources for baseball. They had a great coach, who went to their rival after a short stint.
We've literally allocated more than $100 million for upgrades, and he still had enough to recruit the #1 class. You have to admit that they are both big egos.
Hiring a proven winner when our program is at its peak is not an unreasonable thing to do. Hiring an unproven assistant coach who’s won nothing seems risky. This program is in a better spot now than it was when we hired TV.I am hearing that DW wants to hire from outside. I would not go that route if I were him.
Did he? He gave him money and facilities. He left him alone even when maybe they didn't like each other very much. Truth is we don't (and likely won't) know what Tony's motivation for leaving is, but there is nothing beyond rumors to suggest that DW failed. Again...he left to be the only college coach in history to become the manager of a MLB team. DW has no counter for that, unless the answer was to keep throwing money at him until he couldn't say no.
Because he was winning titles. TV doesn't have to have the top NIL to put together a championship roster. He was being compensated himself as the best coach because of it. A college baseball program does not stand alone, and there has to be some synergy with the other programs. He benefitted from other sports doing well.Absolutely they both have huge egos. I'm just a little surprised TV would leave given the 'historic recruiting classes' he has coming to Knoxville. Not to mention that the big jump to the MLB is frought with hazards. He could flame out fast. Not to mention Tony V was the 2nd highest paid baseball coach in all of college.
Him and Danny may not be best friends, but from a professional standpoint there was not malice in how the baseball program was treated.
Now, Danny might have gotten soured when the new stadium construction started and Tony was flirting with A&M and then now obviously has left for the Giants. That I could see making sense....but whatever went bad I think it changed recently. Cause hard to believe Tony would stick around for 8 years. If it was a bad relationship from the start would have expected a quicker exit.
I would be willing to bet TV lost out on some players because of lack of resources. I'm sure that doesn't sit well. You can't expect your coaches to be 100% in when you are 90% in.Because he was winning titles. TV doesn't have to have the top NIL to put together a championship roster. He's also going to an MLB team that won't have the most resources in his own division. I am a believer that there is some truth about TV thinking college baseball as a whole was undervalued, and he wanted to be at the pro level.
It's already a foregone conclusion to me. The average manager tenure at the beginning of the 2025 season was less than 3 seasons.I don't wish failure on Tony but the odds are he will fail eventually. It's just how things work at that level. I bet he will be back in the college realm in just a few short years.
