Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I say fire Danny White. Let's go hire another rock star AD like we had here prior to Danny White. Last decade was the golden age for UT sports.
You don’t cut a great player just because they strike out in a big spot. And you don’t fire a great AD just because they make a mistake, even if it’s a big one.

Hubris gets in the way of rational decisions a lot of times
most of the time!

It was hubris that led us to the present moment, and a lack of vision from leadership in the conference. It is comical that the SEC kicks the rest of the country's butt every Saturday in viewership but the SEC is getting a worse deal from ESPN than the Big-10 has with Fox, CBS, NBC. Tony's biggest point of frustration was that baseball was generating more revenue for the University, than they were willing to admit when it came down to divvying up the resources. And part of the reason for that is how lousy our media rights deal is with ESPN.

I can't believe so many people are surprised honestly. We are talking Giants vs UT Baseball and Tony is a competitor. Pretty sure they have been talking for weeks so he probably knew he was leaving.

Dumb decision by Tony honestly. Takes a pay cut with a high risk chance of failure when he had everything he wanted at Tennessee and could have built a dynasty here.

Exactly. You now have Trey Wallace, Tony Basilio, Chris Burke, and Kendall Rogers all implying there were issues in the AD but because Basilio is the most vocal about it people don’t want to believe it.
Sure, there were probably disagreements on things, but he would probably still take this job in any scenario. It's not like he was looking to bail, he got courted by a situation that is a clear step up in his profession.

I mean I've been there...leaving a great job because you don't get along with your boss. A job many folks say is a "retirement gig"

But from the outside...Tony was being paid, stadium was being upgraded, NIL was obviously flowing to keep recruiting at a high level...no one can say that DW/UT isn't doing everything to get this program at the level Tony had them playing at.

Only thing I can think of being a friction point would be the Smokies stadium build...but can't say how much UT/DW was involved there...I know originally there were rumors about a "shared" park or something. But I could be remembering wrong.

I am sure a whole bunch of people would love not to talk to their boss for months, especially when they know their job is totally secure- lol.

That is the difference between college and the pros. In college the coach recruits and builds a relationship that is much stronger than it is in the professional game. TV will be managing a team assembled by someone else and will have to adjust his style and personality to other personalities. In the pros it's much more managing personalities than building a team to soot your personality or coaching style.
I think he has an uphill battle. Not many coaches who have no experience in the pro arena have success there. But who knows, God bless and Godspeed.

I don't understand that at all. Frank only wants to coach for a couple more years. It suggests Danny is going to pass over Elander and go outside the program for the hire.

If true, it leads more credence to the idea Danny wants to clean house but knows it’s too late this year to do a regular coaching search. If Frank is the interim, it means this entire coaching staff is gone next summer.

We had a great run in baseball. We were elite and feared by everyone. We won a national championship. Now it’s back to reality and back to the middle of the pack or lower half of the SEC. Highly doubt any team will fear us now.

Egos are astronomical when it comes to this level. I'm sure Danny wants to get credit for his success at hiring. Danny's done well so far but he's replaced coaches that were dumpster fires. He's now going to have to replace a national championship winning coach. We'll see how that works for him.
All I know is the 2 sports that are actually doing great were not DW hires. KC is still up for debate and Heup has brought football back to life but DW did not invent Heup, he was torching defenses way before he ever met DW. Elander is the only answer.

I mean it’s Tony’s decision, and he has every right to pursue his “dream”. Doesn’t mean it wasn’t a stupid decision though. Taking a pay cut and having to compete with the Dodgers and Padres? While you were close to building a dynasty at Tennessee? Dumb, but at least the Giants have a great park. 🙄
