Tony Vitello to SF Giants (Confirmed)

Not if the right hire is made. Danny is about to make a big one here.

Make a big splash hire or a big boo-boo??? DW's approach is never pay the "big cash for the big splash" and, hopefully, never a "big" boo-boo while he's at UTK.

I'm very good with giving Elander his chance as manager... and DW getting some additional NIL $$$ for Vol baseball to prove he's committed to it, help keep some players & get some players

He is a very good coach and he will be missed. However, any intelligent person would not expect for Universities to be able to compete with Major League Baseball teams for a baseball coach. They have billions of dollars available for players and managers. Fact is, if one wants to blame someone, they must blame a person who worked himself into a position where he is the best in his collegiate arena and will be the first in modern history to earn a MLB managers title. How can anyone put blame on anyone who has achieved this position in his career? I certainly can not blame DW nor can I blame TV. I wish him great success in MLB and am confident DW will find the best person available to replace him.

He’s actually gonna make less after Cali taxes but I do agree with you that the lure to run a team in the big leagues is intriguing for coaches. The biggest issues that Tony will have in MLB is 1. Relying on someone else to build his team 2. Not being able to act like a bro anymore and 3. Getting used to losing 50+ games even when you’re good.

Even if that was the case, do you really think that DW would let personal feelings get in the way of making money for the AD? That's kinda what winning a lot does. Why would he risk potentially losing money to let someone he doesn't agree with go?

Here's the thing I think some people are missing. Its not a personal beef between the two of them. Here's the best I can quickly explain it from people on the baseball staff, and a couple people around the department (that predate DW).

DW has his (admittedly strange) way of viewing things. Saying (I'm paraphrasing) "We'll be fine without him if he goes..." and just kinda shrugging it all off wasn't born out of personal friction. Its just literally how the guy thinks.

In baseball terms, he's an analytics guy. Its all 1s and 0s. A guy like DW doesn't understand or really care about the personal, emotional connection a guy like TV has with his team and the fanbase...because he doesn't have or value those types of connections. But not understanding and respecting those connections leads to arms length relationships. Which in turn leads to indifference on the Dept side, and friction on the baseball side.

In some aspects of his job, its a positive. In others, like this one, its an absolute flaw.

Burke and TB discussing next TN baseball coach - he said it should be Elander and that the success that Tony had at TN opens doors. Tony B just mentioned Oregon Coach. Discussion is about the plumber wanting to hire his own guy - not being Elander.

Elander is the obvious choice because we get to see what he is made of while keeping continuity. Additionally if Tony fails in the pro's, he'd 100000% be welcomed back by fans and boosters if the program slides.
He is going to be coaching Arkansas if he fails in the MLB. The best thing for us is if he succeeds at SF

You'll be in a bidding war with Arkansas and he will be a Razorback. This crystal ball is quite clear.

Looks like we have two choices here , Frank or Erlander , who else is gonna leave a top college program to come here in the middle of fall practice , I personally think Tony’s making a mistake since his strengths are talent evaluation and recruiting , neither of which helps in the Majors , I know we’re sure gonna miss his personality and charisma

Either way. This is a 2008 post Fulmer type hire. It will dictate where the program goes. Personally I’m all for Elander. The former players all seem to be on his side and that speaks volumes for me.

Maybe. But then again if he gets a taste of the MLB I’m not sure if he comes back to the college game. If he doesn’t work out in San Fran I could see him getting a hitting coach job or something like that at another MLB club.

We will be fine. Elander and Frank can keep this rolling.

I’m not backing Danny in this. I’m just not. It’s clear he views Tony is a nuisance and is happy to have him gone.
There was tension between them. But its not the main reason Tony is gone. If def didnt help though. Should've never gotten this far. 3 weeks ago, the chance of him leaving was almost none. Then about a week ago things really changed quickly. It wasn't easy for Tony but he is tired of the way players are acting during this crazy NIL era, and the fact that he didnt think he would ever get another chance to coach in the bigs. Tough day to be a Vol!

Arkansas will outbid you, but I'm not sure that even matters. If DW is here TV won't be coming back.
I agree that it probably wouldn't matter if DW is still here, but Tony has juat shown that he isnt solely motivated by money, so the idea of Arkansas outbidding us isn't as concerning. Tony is going to go where he feels valued and can be successful. He already knows those boxes would be checked at Tennessee if there is a new AD that would be interested in bringing him home.
