Tony Vitello to SF Giants (Confirmed)

No, the league is set up to force them to leave early and they have to leave eventually.

Leaving in October is definitely a F U to the program and fan base. I understand thats when the job came open, doesn't make it any less devastating to the program. Never said it intentional but it is a major issue he has personally caused.

He can love UT all he wants (although the love on our side will quickly dissolve), I don't hate the guy, but he's not a VFL in his own words "you're either a Vol or you're not". Don't white knight for a grown man. Especially when I didn't even say anything bad about him.
No offense but you seem like an overly emotional teenager. You‘re entitled to your opinion as misguided as it is.

CTV is a VFL who left for a MLB job. So by your logic, does every player who left for the NFL, NBA, or MLB before graduation not a VFL? It was no “F U” as you stated. The job was offered on Sat and he struggled with the decision until today. CTV was torn only because he loves TN and Knox and his team.

Correct. I’d say the fact that he even struggled with the decision was a testament to his love for Tennessee and the fanbase. Many coaches wouldn’t even give it five minutes of thought. That being said, I’m crushed. Elander is the guy if you ask me.

First, it’s baseball, it has less eyes on it than women’s basketball does! 2nd, not DW’s fault Tony is making a dumb decision! In 3 or less years Tony will be right back to college baseball, and I hope the program that does hire him doesn’t have the resources that TN has POURED into the baseball program. Also at that point other coaches can use his failing in recruiting, so the shine wears off. Either way, DW still is going to pour money into this program that eve at the upper echelon has LOST millions of dollars with it. If Elander has learned anything from Tony on recruiting he will also do just as well here. Heck Tony’s in game decisions a lot of times were stupid, he got by on out talenting people, it’s why they have a ton of guys drafted. Tony was not a head coach prior to coming here, money was poured into the program and it took off. You can say that is Tony, you can say that is the money TN decided to pour into the program. You cannot though say Elander can’t do the same. In the end the baseball team will be fine and Tony will fail and look like an idiot in the process. No way I’d want my ego to take a hit like that, but I guess my ego isn’t as big as his to know that I can’t fail.
Thanks Danny

I’m not backing Danny in this. I’m just not. It’s clear he views Tony is a nuisance and is happy to have him gone.
This went above DW's pay grade. Randy and Donde set the parameters, and it wasn't enough.
I mean....the SF Giants, ffs. That it took 4 days is all that amazes me.

Good luck, Coach. I kinda doubt you see the success and accolades you had here, but then again I wasn't expecting much when you first came.

I really don’t care if some people want to make excuses for Danny. Having a frosty relationship with the best coach on campus is inexcusable. He’s done a solid job as our AD but he’s also benefited from coming into a job where the two best coaches on campus aren’t even his hires.

He’s slid by for many years and fans have accepted the price hikes and transformation of the athletic department because we won a lot of games, especially in basketball and baseball (not his hires). My red line was always keeping Tony. Tony is gone, so Danny better win something meaningful soon or he can leave, too.
I am in agreement with you. DW drove me and my family out of Neyland with the ticket price increase which I have accepted and moved on but by being at least a part of the reason the best coach we had on campus and really the face of the athletic program leave is unacceptable to me.

Why would DW torpedo baseball?
This is what I can’t get my head around for all of the “insider reports” and Basilio re-posts. Why would the top position in the athletic department whose pay is tied to the success or failures in athletics torpedo one sport because he didn’t like the coach (allegedly)? Makes no sense….

I trust the baseball forum folks to be level-headed here. Bummed, but reasonable. For the passers-by with only a passing interest in baseball, this is for you. "Baseball is a losing game." People get paid millions to hit .300. Everyone loses a third of their games. Cy Young pitchers give up homers. Bad outcomes happen all the time. Time to respond. I'm already wondering if it's Elander, or if Danny White goes after someone. PS, Giants at Braves is June 16-18. I'd put up a "Tennessee still loves ya Tony" sign. I just doubt I'd fly to San Francisco to do it.

You misunderstand Danny’s job. His job is making money and fundraising through athletics. Sports that don’t make money, that we spend a lot of money on, are a problem.

Well this is terrible

Appreciate all Tony has done for Tennessee athletics. The 2024 season outside of the 98 football season may be the highlight of my vol fandom.

I hope Tony wins a lot of games for the Giants. However once he leaves the Giants I hope the Giants never win another game and get relegated to AA baseball.
