Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

That's tough considering the chance you had against Georgia. I have seen some people questioning Heupel even as far as saying he's not the guy. Who else is out there? One poster brought up there are only 3 active championship coaches. The question will be does he have the guts to make staff changes. The thing that did bother me Saturday was the refusal to stick to the run and Georgia did the same thing vs Bama and it got them beat too. If Bishop gets 6-8 more carries I bet we win they could not stop it and my bama buddies even admitted it. I think there's a great chance we win out fwiw...
Exactly, if Heup is not the guy who would you replace him with? Your going to really see it this season, most these teams canning their coaches are going to end up downgrading. You don't trade a car that is 90% great for one that has the 10% great of what your car lacks and the other 90% is garbage. Heup may have a tail light out but he's still a hot rod, and the only time the tail light is noticed is when he is blowing by you.

I've heard this repeated over and over on here, but Golesh said he was calling plays when here.
I think that was Josh trying to help him move up the coaching ladder. Golesh didn’t call plays at UCF and I doubt Josh would turn his offense over to a guy that had never called plays in his career.

Offense has mistakes in execution that need to be cleaned up, but overall, they're fine. The real problem is defense. Poor fundamentals, too little leadership, bad play calls, horrid execution. Most of the time they play with no spirit. Third quarter of the Arkansas game, you saw spirit, but most games, it just isn't there. McCoy and Gibson helped mask the lack of good safety play, but with both out, it's evident we've done a piss poor job at recruiting the position. Right now, Banks is our albatross.

Heupel had final say, but Golesh was calling plays. That's how every head coach/coordinator relationship works. Heup could overturn a Banks' play call if he so chooses.
Heup has historically not really meddled with the defense, he let Shannon run the show at UCF, but he has always had 100% control of the offense including calling the plays.

The more I watch the Vols play the more I think Golesh was WAY more important than he was made out to be while here
I get it and don’t disagree but for me i just wish they could play any semblance of defense

Fundamentally they are as bad as it gets. The “get a TFL or give up 10+ yards” philosophy is exactly how you get a Jekyll and Hyde defense with bad fundamentals. It’s terrible.

A lot of them will snap back to reality when Heup is connected to several of these upcoming coaching searches. Whether or not it should be, this has become a raise/extension year for the good coaches across the sport.
Heup has got to be loving this coaching purge sh!t. He's fixxin to get a big raise.

UT Lost to the two teams that people said they had no chance to beat before the season began and

UT had Georgia beat and missed the FG

Alabama had the one play put game out of reach.

So why melt down when it was expected. Sad we had a chance but for those melting down they were the same ones saying we would not even have a chance in those games So I really aren’t worried about their meltdowns.
Its one thing to melt down, its even another thing to do so during the game. But its not ok to go onto the Twatter and call for head coaches head. He's the battle captain.

2022 Vols, with Hendon Hooker in his second year, Hyatt, Tillman, Keyton, Bru, Jabari Small, and Jaylen Wright:
Ypg: 525
Ppg: 46

2025 Vols, with Joey Aguilar in his 7th month, Matthews, Staley, and Brazzell, DeSean Bishop, Peyton Lewis, and Star Thomas:
Ypg: 511
Ppg: 44

Saying Heup should be fired is about as bad as OSU fans wanting Ryan Day gone last year. Not worth entertaining. It’s certainly fair to criticize where applicable though.
It's worse, Ryan Day lost to a Michigan team in turmoil with a roster that was 5x less talented. Heck Blowhio State had the most talented roster in the nation by far.

Whatever happens from here this season (8-4 is still my guess), we need to stick with Heupel

From the beginning I thought of this as an 7-8 year journey to possible glory, sort of like Harbaugh at Michigan (possible cheating notwithstanding).
IMO the true assessment of Heupel begins with the winner of the upcoming QB competition between Mac and Brandon, whether that's decided in 2026 or 2027. They are both Heupel QBs, not portal guys, not partially or fully developed elsewhere. And with two of them, there are fewer excuses about being unlucky like he was with Nico.

I have to disagree slightly. I agree the defense fundamentally is terrible (tackling, coverage, getting off of blocks, etc.), but that being said, they made enough stops for us to win the game.

I get the McCoy issues on not being on the field but my last memory of Gibson he was getting torched by Jeremiah Smith in the Playoff game...

Yeh they did i guess

Although back to back 99 and 75 yard TD drives in the most crucial part of the game is just terrible.

And another converted 3rd and 13 first drive of the game and they go on to have another 90+ yard TD drive. Just killer stuff

Perhaps, but you think it helps achieve any of those objectives to gripe openly about it mid season?
Fans griping at any time has no effect whatsoever on the performance of team. Yes it is irritating to listen to people who don't know their buthole from a beehive complain about things they know very little about but it doesn't affect the team.

Having a QB tailor-made for the offense throwing to a Biletnikoff winner helps too
Serious question, does Hyatt sniff a Belitnikoff if the offense doesn't scheme him wide open every other play? It's not like he did much in Yr 1 or 2. I promise I say that with all due respect, his performance against Alabama is and always will be legendary and I'm glad he had all the success he did.
