Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

There will be another work stoppage in MLB after next season because the players union will never agree to a Salary Cap. Owners have fought this battle for many moons and they never win...
I pull For the Reds so baseball hasn’t been enjoyable for decades. De La Cruz to the Dodgers soon.

I've always thought Heup's teams improved throughout the season. Maybe my impressions have been wrong. However, this year I'm seeing sone regression. Maybe I'm wrong.

I’ve been expecting but haven’t seen improvement

We still have the fight and play through to the last whistle which we almost never had in the era right before Heupel

I’m thinking our problems such as they are relate to youth and inexperience, together maybe with fatigue from some guys playing too much. I wonder if dropped passes and tackling are fatigue as much as anything else.

Golesh help with the game plan and installed new run concepts. Hazle does nothing but work with QBs. We need a true OC. I’d be fine with promoting Luttrell
No, Heup needs to call the plays. He schemes and has and feel for defenses like nobody's business. I would say the only other big time coach in that category is Kiffin. Not one time have ever I seen, it is easy to see live, so many wide open receivers as I have the past few years, against good defenses too. If he ever gets an elite talent at QB watch out.
Our lunatic fringe fans should realize that we are lucky to have him. That's basically true about every sport at UT now.

I've heard this repeated over and over on here, but Golesh said he was calling plays when here.
He may not have 100% called plays, but it’s obvious he did. Just watch a USF game. It’s exactly how we used to run this offense. I actually think he called a lot of the plays when Hendo was QB. The play calling had testicular fortitude then.

3 wishes for the offseason:
1. a true safety, preferably a FS that can hawk the field
2. an injection of creativity in the offense again
3. a timeout guy. doesn't have to be a high-paid assistant. just someone to manage the clock for josh.
Creativity on offense? We have a top five offense. More like creativity on defense and new scheme. IMO I agree wholeheartedly with the other two.

Whatever happens from here this season (8-4 is still my guess), we need to stick with Heupel

From the beginning I thought of this as an 7-8 year journey to possible glory, sort of like Harbaugh at Michigan (possible cheating notwithstanding).
You misspelled 9-3. I'm fighting someone if we lose to Vanderbilt. I dont care if its 1905 Wing T, punt on third down 10-0 Vandy.

If anything happens to Heupel, we riot. We’re so close we can taste it. Just need a few tweaks to get there.

90% of this board called UGA a coin flip at best and Bama a likely loss

90% of this board would have taken 10-2 and would have called us to be in this exact situation at this juncture of the season

99% of this board would have taken where we are today if you offered it to us in 2020

in the perspective/context of teams before Heupel, this team was still fighting in the 4th. We used to beg to have teams that didn't throw in the towel at halftime. For like 10 years we had teams that would have called it quits after the pick 6.

You don't have to compare every day vs your worst day to know whether it was good or not. You also cannot call every day a bad day because it isn't the best day you've ever had.
Additionally, I think Vegas had this team at 8.5 wins. We are fine….stay the course.

JMO, but Heupel doesn't have to worry about his seat getting warm until probation is over. Which is what? 2027? 2028?

Part of college coaching is recruiting. Fulmer could recruit with the best of them whereas recruiting is a weakness for Heupel. I do think Heupel is a better x's and o's coach than Fulmer was, but Fulmer was much better at getting the Jimmy's and Joe's. And to be fair, until Heupel produces a NC, I'm giving Fulmer the nod as the better coach, in his prime.
Fulmer was also benefited in recruiting because in the 90's the only real competition was Florida. Georgia and the Bammers suck most of the decade.

Agree to disagree. You can always have your game plan and ideas and override the call. Or say I’m calling this series. We need him chewing refs and focus on the team more. It would help with clock management too. Kirby is the one of the best DC in the country and he always has a DC calling the plays. It’s still his defense.

Regarding play calling….Lomardi used to run a minimal amount of plays BUT he wanted his team to run them to perfection.

Details are the key. We tighten up there, gain some experience, add some additional talent to the roster and we will be contenders year in year out.

Head coach is always on the headset and can overturn any play call if he chooses. Heupel had a lot of trust in Golesh. My guess is Golesh DID call the plays, and Heupel just overrode him if he disagreed.

Well, there are a lot of catchers putting down signs but the pitching coach is calling the pitches. Believe me nothing on offense happens without Heup making the call.
Heupel had final say, but Golesh was calling plays. That's how every head coach/coordinator relationship works. Heup could overturn a Banks' play call if he so chooses.
