Napier fired

The fear here is do they get James Franklin? It's no secret that Lane Kiffin has been after it or Saban coming out. I do not like this news.
James Franklin could not compete in the puss-ass Big10 what makes you think he can compete in the SEC? And Saban isn't coaching again, why would he ever do that?

Kiffin is the only real possibility

Yeah, it could be worse, I guess. But potentially you're asking for Sunbelt Billy 2.0. We'll see. I'll give him his SEC experience that Napier never had. But no, I don't believe in him. So as a TN fan, I approve this hire :)

He wins 10 games most years in the Big 10 at one of the big 3 historic programs. All he had to do was lose to Ohio State every year, then beat all the other average to crud programs in the Big 10. If he happened to play Michigan, he could still lose to them (which he’d usually do) and he’d be 10-2.

Winning 10 games in the SEC is not in the same stratosphere of ease as winning 10 games in the Big 10.
While I agree, it isn't like he was getting skull drug by Ohio St., Michigan, and more recently Oregon every year, like we have vs UGA before this season. He was on an equal or better talent field to OSU and the rest of the Big 10 the last few years. He just isn't a great X's and O's guy and got outcoached late in games. If he would have relinquished play calling completely, they would likely have won those games at a higher rate.

Obviously, that isn't a huge ringing endorsement for SEC success, but he's won in the SEC before, and at historically bad school at that.

Which is weird. Because he was hired at Penn State, i.e., “Rape U” while that coverup investigation was still ongoing. You’d think Penn State would’ve steered clear, given their situation. And you’d think that the National media would’ve ripped them apart for hiring him after the Sandusky saga. But they didn’t say anything.

They’d have eviscerated Tennessee if we’d hired a coach who covered up a rape after going through a rape scandal. Don’t tell me the national media treats all schools the same. And Big 10 schools have always gotten preferential treatment.

IDK, they eviscerated us for the absolute opposite in regards to Schiano.

Florida isnt as desperate as we were.
They are currently paying 2 HCs to not coach for them. More than 11.5 million being paid just this year. And 3.6 million in buyouts over the next 2 years. Mullen comes off the books after 2027 and that numbers drops to 2.6 million for the next 2 years.

I think they are pretty desperate, tbh. Though maybe not "firing your coach in late December" desperate.

Its still a more attractive job than ours was in 2021 because of more recent success and the rich recruiting base.

More recent success? I don't agree. UF currently has 1 less win in the previous 4.5 years than we did in the 5 years prior to 2021.

And I've touched on the recruiting bit before. The recruiting advantage isn't what it was 20 years ago. Everyone is going into Florida now and pulling elite players and players are traveling across the country to play football now more than ever before. Add to that, Miami is the now the clear top program in the state, in terms of success and money being pumped in. Florida State is also pouring more money into their program than UF currently is. Even UCF is now a P4 program in the Big 12 that can compete for a guaranteed spot in the CFP and will slowly be eating into that recruiting base.

More recent success than us (in 2021). They had won 3 nattys and 3 conference titles since we last won a natty and conference title (again Im talking about where things were in 2021).

Florida in 2025 is a more attractive job than Tennessee was in 2021.

I agree that UF is in a better position now than what we were in 2021. I would say the situation was worse because of the timing. You fire a coach in late December and you miss out on all the top sitting coaches available. Not to mention the NCAA investigation that was coming out way. My point is more that UF is still plenty desperate right now, and I don't think what UF did nearly 20 years ago is all that relevant to "recent success."

And what a blessing it was that we fired Pruitt in December for cause rather than for performance in November, because Billy Napier likely would have been one of our top targets, and given he is from TN, grew up a Vols fan with a lot of family here, he might just have taken the job.

Florida will almost always be a better job simply because you can throw a rock and hit an NFL caliber recruit in that state. The state of Tennessee is getting better, but we do not produce nearly as much top end talent compared to the state of Florida.

Drink, if given time there, could surprise folks. He was one of the first to embrace the NIL era and he has done a good job with it. But at Mizzou, he is always going to top out around 9-10 wins.

Don't get me wrong...I think Florida could do a lot worse than Franklin. And I agree with your points.

I was simply addressing the notion that winning 10 a year in the Big 10 means he will win 10 a year in the SEC because he'll have access to Florida talent. That access to talent is more than outweighed by the much more difficult schedule. Everyone in the SEC has talent. Everyone in the Big 10 does not.

Exactly. The reason I (and many others) didn't want Schiano is that we knew that we'd get scorched by the national media for hiring him when he knew about the Sandusky stuff.

The question is... if Florida hires Kiffin... does Ole Miss hire Franklin?

I don't think Kiffin leaves Ole Miss but he has been known to do some wild unpredictable things so who knows.
