Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

One more thing. Heupel has no confidence in our DC. Want to know how I know? Because he plays every end of half the same way. He is trying to take away remaining time on the clock so the other team can't go 75 yards in 1 minute to score. He has become predictable in his playcalling as a result. We run clock and then put our offense in terrible situations related to clock late in the half. Is causing us to lose points and last night became a 10–14-point swing. Look at our games this year.

- Against Arkansas we were conceding to halftime, then Bishop ripped one and put us at midfield. Obviously, we seemed unprepared for that and failed to convert.

- MSST. Stopped Bothwell at MSST 28-yard line with 1:01 left on the clock. Didn't take a timeout????? Clock runs to 14 seconds, and they punt.

- Bama. 2nd and 10 from Bama 27 with 1:30 left in the half. We hand off to Thomas for a gain of 1 yard. We then allow 40 seconds to run before the next play????? This was defensive play calling. We were scared of leaving them any time on the clock prior to halftime. If he had confidence in his DC, this would not happen.

To compound the issue, we hand it off to Bishop and he is tackled at the Bama 5-yard line. I'm screaming "Timeout!" Nope. We allow 12 seconds to run and then hand it off again. This put us in the predictable situation and the pick-6. If Tennessee needs a stat guy to handle timeouts, I will do it for free. Just put me through the headset.

He had the same DC when he use to be ultra aggressive at the end of halves. I think the pressure has gotten to Josh and he is more worried about not losing than he is about playing to win.

What other big jobs open up this cycle?

FSU? AUB? LSU (not likely)?
Yes. Yes. Maybe but probably not, he’ll get one more year (undeservingly).

Maybe: SCAR. Kentucky.

A few could open up if their coaches get poached: Ole Miss, Mizzou, Nebraska, Washington, ISU, Vandy, Louisville, SMU, Pitt, NCSU, Cincy, Arizona State, BYU, Boise.

My buddy is a huge LSU fan. I can tell you right now, they’re aren’t happy with BK down in Baton Rouge. If he loses another one, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him go.
They never have been. It’s a bad fit, always was. Brand Name butch with as salt of the earth as it gets fanbase.

That would be a poor calculation on his part, if the case (I don’t think it is - but I can definitely see how you feel that way based on games like uga, msu and arky). Teams not good enough to take that mindset. Needs to be true to self, continue to elevate and keep pedal to metal.

I agree but it happens to many coaches.

Let me make this a little simpler for you. The one play was at the one yard line. We should have scored a TD (7 points) but instead we threw a pick six (7 points). That’s a 14 point swing and a one possession game in that instance.

Does that make more sense now?

Ands, ifs, and Buts .

138 plays were run in the game and you pick 1 and say should of but instead.

I could pick a few of the other 137 and say should of to make any narrative I want.

Could of picked up a fumble and run it back for 7 , but —— see how easy that was?

I dunno, but with all these programs having vacantcies, better lock your current HC up.

Also, FSU have you considered a defensive coach? We just resigned Tim Banks, and he is aces on the recruiting front. Better get him fast!

That’s fair. From that perspective, I think as essentially a first year player he’s been decent. Expect him to take a big jump next year assuming he becomes more consistent.

Yeah Staley is carving out the Hyatt role. But he’s not going to stretch the perimeter like MM could. Doesn’t have the same type of natural athleticism (and before you fight me on that I mean things like length/range/body control/jump ball potential/etc). Could he be more productive statistically, sure. More dependable, sure. But he’s not a guy like brazzell or hopefully MM who could draw a safety over the top due to perimeter jump ball potential. MM still just scratching the surface.
That could be true.
The one thing he has to overcome the most is his average hands.
The second is his seemingly less than 100% effort on every play.

He could take a big jump.
I’d say it’s 50/50 whether he actually does.
Just my opinion

That game was all about playcalling and execution and was winnable. It wasn’t cause some huge talent gap like others are saying. We shot ourselves in the foot over and over.

There was a considerable difference in talent between the two sides but no doubt better plays in certain situations and better execution and the game was winnable.

Saw earlier where someone post the chance of 40+ moves in head coaches. Those fired, those hired to replace them and so on. I think the openings now are at 10-11 with FSU still possible today.
I‘m being to think that number maybe a little low.
