We had to fight off a basketball blue blood to keep Rick Barnes. Winning coaches are going to be in demand and nobody stays in one place for 30 years anymore.even if vitello stays and gets whatever it is he would be angling for, i got a feeling that it is going to be every year we are going through this. winning in baseball is nice, but it is nowhere near the same stratosphere as the importance of winning in football. if he is not happy being treated like a king in knoxville, he should go to san francisco and get treated how he will there
This really isn’t a risky move on Tony’s end because he knows he can go right back to college if he can’t hack it in MLB and have almost any job he wants. The long game: 2-3 years of so-so MLB, then Van Horn hangs them up. Tony realizes his true calling is college baseball. He’s back in Fayetteville.
Very well said my friendHard to say not "remotely close". We finished in the Top 12 in the country in football, and the Top 8 in the country in Mens BB, and Top 16 in the country in Women's BB. Like....we are good all around man, and have been close to winning championships in other sports. But baseball was the one who did it.
I am sure that Danny White will do all he can to keep CTV. But sometimes, it isn't all about money. Sometimes its about wanting to see what you're capable of on a different level with a different level of challenge. TV may want that for himself. He may be tired of the constant travel and recruiting. If he stays, we would love to have him. If he leaves, it isn't gonna be because DW didn't do all he could. TV loves UT, but he may have other goals he wants to work towards. I'm a Tennessee fan, but I'm a Tony Vitello fan, and whatever team he coaches for, if it is a pro team, I'm gonna be a fan of. He is a good dude and has been nothing but great for our university.

That's not DW's fault. Every, single, contractor in Knoxville that works on UTK construction projects goes over budget and takes more time than promised. It's the way the bidding system is set up that hamstrings how contractors are chosen. It didn’t receive the appropriate prioritization and resources from the contractor and TN dropped the ball in “not riding herd” on managing the contractor. No excuse for LNS not being 100% completed by Feb 2026.
Football--yeah, we are not close. We can be competitive, but we are not close for a nattyI agree with your 2nd paragraph, but we really aren't close to competing for a natty in any of the other major sports. Got our doors blown off in the fb playoffs and in the elite eight.
That makes more sense. I was surprised when I was at LNS last season. I was thinking “this is all” that’s been completed so far.I had a typo that I just corrected. I meant to say “no excuse for LNS not being 100% completed by Feb 2026”. The original plans called for a completion date of Feb 2025. They will miss it by 2 years.
I think women’s is closer just because of Caldwell’s recruiting classes.Football--yeah, we are not close. We can be competitive, but we are not close for a natty
MBB--we are close....I mean, back-to-back elite 8s and really some of the most questionable officiating preventing a couple of final fours in our history (thinking Barnes x1 or 2 and Pearl x 1
WBB--I feel like we are close--I mean, closer than we have been in a long time...but not as close as MBB.
Fair point but how did MS State’s stadium get built on time (19 months) without missing any deadlines and $1.5M under budget while still playing at the stadium being totally rebuilt? Where there’s a will, there’s a way and someone at UT is in charge of working with the Project Managers at the construction firm. I don’t buy the “it’s always delayed and over budget” excuse. No way this should take 3 years to finalize at a cost of >$105M. Someone dropped the ball. That's not DW's fault. The only control is that F&S can blacklist firms.... then those firms dissolve and form new ones which aren't blacklisted even though we know what they're doing.
The bidding system is forced on the school by the state. And I wouldn't be shocked if there's folks in Nashville who have financial stakes in some of these construction companies.
Usually the high profile jobs get done in time and it's the academic buildings or beautification projects that drag on, but this happened to the track facilities too.

TV is getting a new $100M stadium !!!!! You can't get it all. Plus, it apparently didn't hurt us (NIL) since we got who we wanted in portal. We have one heck of a team for this upcoming season regardless of who is coaching in the dugout.<<I am sure that Danny White will do all he can to keep CTV.>>
I am not so sure about that. I have heard that DW took some of the BaseVols rev share/NIL money and gave it to womens hoops, and CTV wasn't thrilled about it.
Because that's a different state and different school which likely has different rules on these sorts of things with different builders. Apples and oranges.Fair point but how did MS State’s stadium get built on time (19 months) without missing any deadlines and $1.5M under budget while still playing at the stadium being totally rebuilt? The head baseball coach is critically important regardless of talent. See Early at TX AM. This program will take a big step back if CTV leaves. You won’t find a more relatable, outgoing, charismatic coach on the planet than Mr Tony Vitello. He’s a unicorn….TV is getting a new $100M stadium !!!!! You can't get it all. So I guess LNS needs a Miss ST PM in lieu of the Auburn and Pellissippi St PMs that are managing LNS?Because that's a different state and different school which likely has different rules on these sorts of things with different builders. Apples and oranges.
Being constantly delayed and overbudget isn't an excuse to justify LNS being the same. It's just a fact that the university has been dealing with these companies for 15+ years and it's the same story every time. Maybe I could add I worked at F&S as a student intern and sat in these meetings and listened to the staff complain about the situation they're stuck in.
They have punishments in place (fines for taking more time and going over budget) but they usually get warnings first.
I agree it's BS and it shouldn't be happening. Maybe Boyd, a developer himself, should do something about that
Basically I question if there's truly a will or if the people who have the power to fix it get kickbacks.
I can’t believe how anyone at UT could underestimate the value of CTV. He could turn TN Tech into a CWS contender within 3 years. He’s truly a generational coach who AI would clone if it was creating the best college baseball coach on the planet.Yep. Trey Wallace of Outkick last night said he had heard from people inside the program that they believe Tennessee baseball will be fine if Tony moves on, and if that’s true and the attitude of the decision-makers in the building, we have problems.
Your right. I work with new construction home builders and builders for both new homes, townhouses and multifamily apartments and condos. My company delivers and installs all the appliances for our customer partner Electrolux appliances. We work with Lennar Homes, DR Horton, Adams Homes and a bunch of others on the multifamily projects.Because that's a different state and different school which likely has different rules on these sorts of things with different builders. Apples and oranges.
