Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

That's not good. UK has played both OM and Texas very very well at home.

We cannot take them lightly. Throw their record out the window. Another dogfight in store for us.

Depends on how we executed in that 1st quarter.

We outgained Bama and really a few poorly timed penalties (blame officials if ya want, but it's a bad trend our teams have) and a few untimely drops and that game got away from us.

Kentucky isn't Bama though...they will make mistakes and Stoops will play it safe. We have to win the LOS, which we didn't do at Bama.

I don't mind going for it, but I will say the play choices were bad.

We pick up the 4th and 1 (one of many questionable spots by officials)

after a TO
1st and 10 an incomplete pass... 33 seconds left
2nd down, 9 yard run 21 seconds left
3rd down 3 yard run 13 seconds left
1st and goal a 1 yard run then we take our last TO

So 9 seconds left and it's 2nd & goal...we come out of 2 timeouts (ours then Bama took one after we lined up) and call that horrible pass to the flats that gets picked for a TD the other way.

My question is why in that situation with 9 seconds left are we looking at any pass other than 1 on 1 fade to Brazzell?
Against a CB that’s dogshit. Remember how VN viewed hadden before his senior year? Trash talker that got burnt every game. That’s how bama fans view domani Jackson

Him and Brazzell got into after the game and DeBoer had to separate them

So who are we going to get to replace McCoy and boo next season because we see how important DB play is for our team's success?
I am referencing boo because it's pretty clear with his hot and cold play (looking like he only gives max effort part of the time or has just not quite got it between the ears but a great athlete) coming off his punishment, that I think it's a foregone conclusion that he hits the portal after this season...

Joey now has the most INTs by any QB under Heupel at TN after just 7 games...

I do remember quite a few App State folks saying that we'll love him, but he's a gunslinger that takes a lot of risk.
Pick 6 was not risk just a poor throw. Most of his others have not been gunslinger crap but 50 50 deep ball like punts on 3rd down or off hands of WR’s. I’ve been fine with him outside that throw and I’m wondering how much injury played a part. He is a gunslinger

You have confidence your QB doesn’t make such a horrible throw behind the receiver where you throw it only where he can catch it OR it’s out of bounds. Joey just threw one of his worse throws this year. I’m ok with a fade call to Chris BUT still have to throw it where only he can catch it or out of bounds. Bad throw could still be a big issue.

A roll out to your arm side to the short side of the field on an obvious passing down with the DBs all watching the QB is asking for a "perfect" throw, that's not what Joey does.

7th game of the season the staff shouldn't be calling plays like that, call the best play for Joey in that situation.... our 1st TD was a similar situation and the play call was totally different. Joey scrambled and found a TD to Staley.

I don't see Matthews asking for more NIL after this season, if anything I believe he should maybe get a cut in pay... He's been here long enough with his talent not to be flat dropping passes almost every freakin game.

I think it can be paid off over a long period of time, but yes its huge. College Football makes it feel like money isnt real.
Here's what is absurd to me: most of the students at these schools are accumulating massive student debt while their schools pay FOOTBALL COACHES 50 million dollars to go play golf and maybe do an interview a year. Don't even have to take the job.

I would be revolutionarily angry.

Heupel doesn’t need to be fired, but it is frustrating to be five years into his tenure and still watching undisciplined football. Going into the game, most people mentioned the importance of not beating yourself because Alabama doesn’t make mistakes. They don’t turn the ball over. And they play clean football.

I know there is still a talent gap, but it’s not massive. We didn’t lose because of talent issues. We lost because we still can’t get the fundamentals right. I need to see Heupel make some type of change on the staff this off-season to show that these mistakes need to be fixed and he’s doing something about it.
There is a talent gap because of DB recruiting, but reenforcement should be on the way.

Welp, hopefully the portal will be good to us.

McMurray will be gone too

While I agree, high balls to the middle of the field against tight coverage... he has to be given a bit of fault.

Staley falling is the only INT that's 100% not on Joey. And he thew 2 last night (the 2nd on the 2PT try didn't count)
True slightly his fault but not most of the blame. One of the other INT’s was straight deflected 20 feet in the air. I think it was against UAB

He’s made some mistakes, he’s pretty good not great. Good enough to have the team at 7-0

Man...I get being aggressive, but also 16-10 going into the half would've felt a hell of a lot better than 23-7 considering how poorly we played the 1st half.

Pick 6 really was a back breaker...

Also the LOS was wild, Bama forced 4 sacks and 8 TFLs, we had 0 sacks and 4 TFLs on both sides of it we got outplayed. There were some bad calls, but I'm just looking at the things we had control over. Still not sure why on the road at Bama was the game they decide to changeup the OL and rotate them.
The LOS was the most surprising part of the game based on what we had seen from both teams coming into the game. Our DL did phenomenal against the run. Completely stonewalled them. But the DL got almost no pressure on dropbacks. That was unexpected. And their DL had not been very good at pressure on dropbacks and our OL had been great in protection. What happened there?

Offense could be better with play calls and clock management, but it's not broken. We're getting much better QB play out of Joey than we ever did from Nico. It's the defense that is broken. Safety play is not good. Missing McCoy and Gibson is killing our secondary. Redmond shouldn't be playing as much as he is considering he's a true freshman. LB play needs to be better. I think Carter is fine. I think Telander is serviceable. But I don't think they should be on the field at the same time. We need a speedier LB for coverage. And honestly, this DL is not as good as last years. Some people thought I complained too much about not getting more defensive help from the portal. Now we're seeing why I wanted more defensive help from the portal. Attention needs to be put on both sides of the ball, not just the offense. Some ar under the impression that offense alone will do it, but you have to be solid on both sides of the ball in the SEC.

At least we get to watch basketball and LV’s. LV’s preseason top 10 expected to compete for the SEC championship and outside shot at the National Championship this season in year 2…

You would have kicked a FG...from the 1...with 9 seconds left?

I would have personally been behind firing any UT coach that was that wussified vs Bama. Dear god. Hindsight is 20/20, but this is complete nonsense and a roll-over mentality. I could never support that smh
Yes, no timeouts. I would have thrown a fade. Then kicked a fg if it were dropped. Pts matter in this game, especially when they have the lead and get the ball to start the half.

One comment I will make...

Offense this season has for sure been a return to form after seeing what Joe/Nico produced

last night was the worst game...20 points (really 27 if ya count that obvious TD run to end the game) and 410 total yards with just 1 INT.

Blame officials if ya want, but penalties are still a concern. Quite a few we had were presnap screw ups by the OL. Sham has jumped early so many times this year when HE is the one that signals C to snap it...

Defense...I don't know, when your DC is also your Safeties coach you don't expect passing defense to be the weakest part of the defense. But it seems to always be the case unless we have an elite DB or something. Staff has to figure out how to scheme/play call better with who they have available in the secondary and get it fixed.

Going in we all knew Ty lights up zone when he's not getting pressured...and that's exactly what happened. Didn't get pressure and he lit us up when in zone.
