Zero Holding Calls against Alabama O-Line

The refs aren’t the reason we lost. There were some iffy calls but we got away with some holds ourselves. More than anything it’s putting our guys in the worst position possible to be successful. The defense is what it is, BAD. The offense is where coaching is really killing us. Not sure why they want to try and reinvent the wheel in the worst situations instead of doing what has made us successful. The playcalling, time management, and all the other self sabotaging bs is killing us. Not to mention the constant bs presnap penalties.

I didn’t go back to 2019, but the last three games played in Tuscaloosa, Alabama has been penalized ZERO times for offensive holding.

ZERO!
It’s not going to change. I agree there is holding but we got away with numerous holds last night, too. But again, I agree with you - Bama is like Duke in basketball- they get generous whistles or non whistles.

Bama soundly beat us last nt. They are a better team and would have beat us at any stadium last night. They aren’t yesterday’s Bama team but top two in SEC imo.

When you get to go into a game saying “we aren’t going to get called for holding” it completely changes what the coaches can do.

Going into this game, we were 4th in sack percentage and had 15 sacks against SEC opponents. Alabama was 55th in sack percentage allowed. Somehow, Alabama didn’t allow a sack or get called for a hold. That’s damn near impossible.

Yeah we ****ed up plenty. Refs still had different rules.

I don’t think any team prepares for any game expecting to be held or get certain calls. You can’t expect to get sacks on a consistent basis without applying pressure. The thing is we drop 7-8 guys in coverage and they can’t do that either so I don’t understand why they don’t bring more pressure or at least mix it up more.

I disagree. In Neyland, I think it's a completely different ball game.

Bama did not soundly beat us, we soundly beat ourselves. Everybody knows how bad the defense so that is a given. All Alabama and others have to do is figure out the Defensive alignment and call one of 6 -10 plays.

Several dropped passes on offense.

We played scared last night.

Refs missed some calls last night, but to be expected. Away game to be expected, a loss.

I expected the Defense to be corrected or at least patched with schemes. It was not.
Whatever the problem is the Defense is passive and not aggressive.
Depth will always be an issue until we get experience and the players that can provide it.

Yeah, while these refs definitely suck they are not why we lost. Granted, it was annoying to see them finally call some flags on Bama on our last drive but those were also some obvious that they almost had to call them. The D is not good. Not having McCoy and Gibson hurts us badly, and guys like Turrentine and Teelander would not play so much on a high level defense. I miss McCoy, as well as last year’s DL guys. Like with Auburn’s offense, Lagway for the Lizards, the Dogs’ D, etc. halfway through the season this is probably just what we can expect at this point.

You’re right that the offensive play-calling was suspect. Joey had an awful mistake at the goal line but I just couldn’t wrap my head around some of our calls and time management. Why can’t we play with more discipline in these big road games?!

I don’t see it changing. I love Heup but it’s followed him from day one as head coach. It’s the time when the penalties occur - drive killers and self inflicted.

A receiver lining up one yard off line of scrimmage, false starts, etc. The numerous dropped passes.

Ultimately I don’t understand why we did not try like a fade to Brazell or whatever. I get why we’d try to pass with no timeouts remaining and not wanting to “play not to lose”. The announcers or whoever saying Heup should not have even tried to get a TD I disagree with. But yeah, the execution by Joey there was awful. Better to throw it away if necessary with so little time remaining and three points in the bag.

The play with the safety was also maddening.

You could be right and I hate it. Hope he does some self reflection and we finally clean this stuff up especially when we play on the road. At this point it is fair to be a little pessimistic about that but I will hope. Because against the better teams we can’t expect for the opponent to implode like we can expect when playing a Mark Stoops team or Billy Naper team.
