Heupel is our Mark Richt.

He's probably got a few 7-5 or 6-6 seasons left in him that we'll have to suffer though but he's also got a few 9-3/10-2 seasons as well.

We'll have some playoff appearances, but we'll never be a real contender.

He'll either follow Danny White to his next job, or White's replacement will fire him after 11-12 years at UT

I’m cool with it

Unfortunately, he doesn't have that IT factor, he coaches scared too much when the game is on the line. Tim Banks will blitz and get the other team in 3rd and 18 and then play PREVENT defense and give up a 1st down. Can somebody tell me how Willie Martinez keeps a job. You got two 6'3" receivers on the goal line, let them make a play at least once but you throw a play to the slowest player on the goal line. Hueple's clock management has and always will be HORRIBLE. If you're an offensive guru then why don't you go for it on more than 50% of 4th downs ala Dan Campbell (he's not scared of nothing). Huepel's offense is really good vs average talent, but Elite Defenses figure it out pretty fast and everybody has caught up to his offense in 2025 in the SEC..

The consensus opinion of JH by people who don't see the world through orange glasses is he's a good coach, better than what we've had, but will never compete for championships and never move ahead of the elite teams. He's now 2-3 against AL, 0-5 against GA (2-2 against FL). And hasn't played for a championship. What say you?

Josh might need to look inward a little bit if he wants to take that next step as a coach. If he does, I think he very likely will win a championship--perhaps not with Tennessee.

Heupel seems to want to take the long game by being highly loyal, promoting from within and developing the people around him. That can create some timing issues and causes the need for him to micro-manage.

i.e. I think losing Golesh hurt Heupel... He now has his mind on the offense too much to do other things (like manage the game clock properly.) That's an in-game effect on his performance.

He is only 47. The GOAT Saban took 11 years before winning his first NC. He was 52. Then there are guys like Cignetti who are 60 and just now thriving. If Heupel continues to grow as a person and coach, he is as capable of getting there as anyone else.

Tonight was ugly. Pathetic really... but we need to be careful about crapping all over a guy who has done so much in his first 4 years if we don't want a repeat of the last 15 or so.

PS I wonder if penalties committed is a stat our staff includes in their profile when recruiting. I mean…

He's a good coach but not elite.. Game management is a big issue. Sloppy football is a big issue. He needs staff upgrades he doesn't seem to be willing to make..

If he doesn’t make change, fire Halzle, I’m out on him.

He’s a good coach but not a national championship coach.

Y’all are hilarious. Tennessee was never going to win this game and they did about like every one predicted. Alabama is a better team than Tennessee at virtually every position. With that being said, Banks isn’t the answer and neither is Halzle. Heupel is a good coach in a conference full of good coaches and Tennessee would be crazy to get rid of Heupel but he does need to get rid of a couple assistants
So what do you do with a coach that refuses to upgrade his assistants and consistently recruits slightly behind the upper echelon of the SEC?

I like Josh, I think there's potential to be great, but I think I've seen enough to know he won't take the necessary steps to get there.

My fear is his stubbornness makes him become Fulmer without the NC.

Sorry outlook on life. “Supposed to lose”. Bama didn’t look like they should beat us by 20. We did it to ourselves.

Guess what - Bama will be favored next year also, as will GA. I guess we should put Ls on those for the coming years as well. “Supposed to lose”.

At what point are we “not supposed to lose” these anymore? You guys have funny ways of coping.

Considering we have beaten Bama 2 of the last 3 seasons, I think we are on the way

Remaining schedule: KY 50/50 chance, Oky. Loss? UF Loss? New Mexico St W, Vandy Loss? This season could very well end up like this. Hoping JH can get 5 wins but I would not bet on it.

ESPN just had an article this past offseason that had Heupel as the top coach in the country based on the measurables they used.

Can you tell us who is in your “consensus”?

I would bet money that it involves only you sticking your finger in your @$$ and checking the wind.

AD White just extended him again which is BS imo. He’s not that elite so far. He may end up elite but his teams routinely cannot win on the road and are even worse against ranked teams on the road. He gets out coached several times a season by his peers. I like him as a coach and person but he’s said it himself, no one person is bigger than the program, yet our AD treats him like he is. His performance demonstrates he’s not. 5 years, no SEC title game appearance, no playing for a NC in a title game. He’s better than what we had but he’s floating at mediocrity.

Just spitballing here, but, maybe Josh is the coaching equivalent of the 5 star player who excels in practice but can't put it together under the lights. It becomes apparent when he's making decisions in the red zone with clock/timeout management and play-calling. I think the least disruptive corrective action would be to hire a play-caller.

The Hype is an 8-4/9-3 coach with an occasional 10-2 season. Thats his ceiling.

Weird that he’s had 4 full seasons and he’s been 10-2 in both. Seems more than occasional!

It’s what got the last coach that won a natty fired. It’s crazy how mediocrity is the new success.

If Heupel has two losing seasons in 4 years, I’ll be glad to have the conversation about moving on

If he’s mediocre…what do you call the previous 15 years before he took over?

And hire….. who, lol?

I think we’ve seen his ceiling as a coach but wanting him fired is asinine
We have had worse. It's time to accept where we are and who we have become and stop reaching for the stars. Enjoy the game and get on with life. Tennessee will have some decent years and some not so decent under any coach.
