Tennessee Lady Vol News

Latham's shot was coming along nicely last year, and I expect her to improve coming into this year. Janiah Barker also has a beautiful stroke from the 3. We didn't get to see it much last year because she was completely pigeon-holed to the paint as a rebonder/strong forward for UCLA, but if you go back and look at clips of her at Texas A&M, she shot 40% from the 3 as a freshman and 34% from 3 as a sophomore which is also great in game play. If she is given the green light, she can be a great 3-point option for us, especially at 6-4, cause there isn't anybody stopping that.

Thank you! You ‘splained it well!

…i think Kim be sandbagging. 😉
I kinda think so too. I'm thinking that was some gamesmanship at the mic at SEC media days. There is no way she is going to change her whole approach just because she added a lot of highly athletic players. I say the ball still goes up from the 3-point line at a very high volume, but this year, with a whole bunch of athletes who are aggressive and can jump out of the gym and go get the offensive rebounds for easy put-backs.

We're on the same wavelength with this. To add to what you said, everyone should remember that even Zee Spearman is capable of getting into a groove from deep. And I agree with chuck in that I think Kim may be sandbagging a bit. Like I said a few days ago, we could have different players every game lighting it up from deep. I'm not worried about that. And with the strong driving in the arsenal, that's gonna result in some extra open shots on the perimeter as opponents have to collapse into the lane to try to stop layups.

It's going to be a fun season, no doubt about that.

Coach Kim is probably a student of Sun Tzu...Never let your opponent know what you are going to do.

There may be a mixture of truth, sandbagging, and motivational tool in what Kim is saying. At this point in the year, it may be true compared to a year ago when we had Tess, Jewel, and Samara who all preferred to take the three and then later developed their two-point game. I don't think there is any veteran player on the team that you can say that about, though some may ultimately be that. You don't want to count on your main 3-point shooter being a freshman point guard either, though not saying that Mia isn't up to that. Her comments are likely motivational as well, as for someone to really become a primary three-point shooter means that they have to practice it all the time including outside of formal team practice. I imagine hearing her comments to the press might light a fuse for some of the players. It is precisely a tactic Pat used when she would frequently bellyache about how bad of a job rebounding the team was doing even if statistically, they were doing well. She wanted MORE!!

[if that Saturday intel is correct]

Last year's team put 96 on UNC, hope they can exceed that today with this year's roster. A 100-spot on a P4 team woud probably turn some heads, even if a scrimmage.

Reality is that we'll probably hav more trouble this go-around than last year. UNC was the first team we played in this system, but now they hav a better idea of how we play. Yet, if the backcourt pressure is a step up from last year's preseason (it should be!), then we still might be able to pull something impressiv off.

GBO! Wish we were able to watch...

I don’t want this year’s team thinking about last year’s preseason scrimmage against UNC.
I also don’t want to really know the final score. If I’m Coach Caldwell I would probably even sit out a few players just to give those reps to players deeper in the rotation specifically spots 11-14.
This team knows it’s better than UNC.

I WANT A MUDHOLE STOMPED INTO UNC! RUN THEM INTO THE GROUND AND SEND A MESSAGE RIPPLING THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY! WE HERE BABYYYYYY!!

But also I wouldn’t be mad if players who need the rest, sit.

Honest, I'm not trying to be contrarian, but I wonder...

If CKC was sandbagging on this team's 3-point shooting abilities, wouldn't it only be a surprise to our exhibition game opponent? After that, the rest of our opponents looking at the video would be like, "Yeah. Right!" and then prepare to defend us accordingly?

If there was any messaging in that B'ham message, my guess is it was directed toward our team:
Don't expect you can win by chunkin' 'em up from outside--be ready to drive, box out, and rebound for every point this season.

Oh, I was serious. And I bet it would work.
But mostly I was looking for a lighthearted, mischievous project to take my mind off of the Tony Vitello story. Could be a rough, rough weekend for UT sports if the LV soccer team can't find the net.

Then the only good news would have been that the Lady Vols basketball team maybe beat UNC in a secret scrimmage, the results of which can't be shared.

I remember last year really early in the season that Kim was specifically stating that Latham had a really good three-point shot. Now that has another year of experience and has adjusted to our system, it time for this to Manifest!!

I Can guarantee that Latham will take more three point shots this year and make more three point shots this year... She will shoot somewhere around 30-35%
