That said, I don't disagree with you. The Vols need to continue being opportunistic, and they need to get better at stopping drives on 3rd down.

I just don't buy into stats as much as most people do. The only one that matters is wins and losses.

It's a real shame about McCoy and Gibson being out. If we had them our pass rush would be even better statistically(and it's already the best in the country I believe in sacks per game, if not its close) as they possessed the ability to lock receivers down. All the sudden Hood is now available to shut down the #3 and guys like Redmond instead of having to play against one of the top WRs of the other team, is playing the opponent's 4th or 5th best receiver.

Such is football, though. Injuries suck.

i think hood is better than Gibson

either way, the safeties could key in on the run and spend the rest of the time hawkin

really is a shame, but i dont think we get Hood without McCoy being hurt right?

Every year we lose a game we shouldn’t. Mostly because one side of the ball (or both) fails to show up at all. Winning in Gainesville is no gimme, and if Mateer’s hand is healed, OU will be a very tough out. Then you gotta worry about the upset no one sees coming.

If our defense continues to play the way it has this year, we have two losses left in us.

Those teams were not among the worst in the country. Auburn was average defensively, and LSU and Bama were above average. They also had historically good Heisman winners.

OSU was an outlier...they were a buzz saw who had top tier talent and got motivated after they lost to Michigan and rolled thru everyone unfortunate enough to have to play them. D and rushing attack were the two reasons we were even in playoffs. And, in semi case study, w/ a better offense this year, we know we better score 35-40 range to win against top tier teams, where last year mid-20's won most of our games.

Because with this defense, we may not (and probably wont) even BE in the playoffs this year. To win a championship you have to put yourself in the position to play for one. If we dont make the playoffs, then this will have been a less successful season than last season. Its not rocket science.

Our D has performed well against the "cupcakes." Otherwise, they are awful. As much as I hate to even think about it, I see 'Bama's speedy receivers making us look like fools. It could be a beatdown.

If all things were equal and we had last year's offense, the difference is probably about 6-7 vs. 10-3 we had last year. And even with this year's offense we could be looking at 8-4. So, yeah I'd say a big difference.

And FYI, no one stopped Ohio St after that Michigan game.

We are the bona-fide first or second youngest team in the SEC. We lost three NFL caliber DL to NFL, and our primary Edge rusher. That's four starters, who played majority of snaps.

Covid year isnt a thing now...

Here's where I have an issue:

1) Banks is a safeties guy. Banks SEEMS to place a higher degree of importance on mature players versus younger. At what point does a coach see that his safety of choice isn't making good reads, and routinely gets beat?

Case in point, Tyre West runs 20 yards down field to tackle running back. Where's the safety? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

First quarter - Ark - Arkansas TE in end zone, looks around for someone to block. Where's the safety? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

2) Recruiting - Jimmies and Joe's. We have a couple kids coming in next year that are legit athletic enough to play safety. But that doesnt help this year.

Tennessee has one, if not top recruiting budget year after year. We have no depth.

So, logically. The guys who you do have playing, are playing too many snaps.

I do like this staff a lot. But not taking a DL, LB, and Safety in last porthole was a mistake.

3) Getting off blocks - I never played a down of football. But, I can see it every ... single ... game. Chalk it up to being young. Fine.

But the misalignments, busts, not getting off blocks comBINED with lack of discipline.

That's on Banks, he's the DC, he demands thar kind of money.

It has to be better. No one wants to hear it.

I agree with this, safety play has been an issue and having to rely on our athletic young secondary guys with talent due to needing to have them play corner (due to the injuries) has been an issue.

The other issue is Banks while great at dialing up blitzes needs to scrap the "half man, half zone" alignment on 3rd and 4th downs....it's confusing for the younger players and doesn't work unless the pressure is immediate

Brooks Austin, of whom sounds like he knows what he's talking about fame, says Banks is making the right calls, but he isnt calling them to his defensive talent.

Okay, so this is from gameonpaper.com, an excellent source of advanced statistics for college football. I actually use these numbers for the podcast.

First, they have an entire glossary. And a couple people saying sacks and turnovers aren't included, well that's not true. EPA (expected points added) factors that in. Glossary | College Football | Game on Paper

A lot of this is measured by A) percentages instead of raw numbers because percentages are a better way to measure in college football and B) Success rate.
