Is our pass defense as bad as people say?

Our DBs need to be up on the line and rough up their WRs as soon as the ball is snapped. Pop them good and disrupt their timing and let them know we are not taking any crap off anybody.
That oughta do it. BUT, Get too close to Williams and he will be behind you for a chunk play or a score. The Vols have played off of receivers all year. You have to go for the head of the snake.

The secondary is young without much experience. McCoy and Gibson injuries have pretty much caused the problem of a young, mostly inexperienced secondary. I don't have an answer for what needs to be done, other than gain experience. Same with the defensive line. Last years line had a lot of experience, this year, not so much, not to mention injuries along the line too.

The offense has to make plays and score every possession, which is unlikely. Lets pray the team comes out with a bad attitude.
This years line has a bunch of experience. Josephs, West, Eason, Bailey, Moi. All of these guys are vets

Sitting back in soft zone is getting us killed on 3rd down. Drop the safeties but play up on the WRs, maybe even press off the line. Interrupt the route and give your pass rush an extra beat. Because the current strategy is getting us carved up.
Heupel just needs to tell Banks call third down like it is second down.

We can't play zone as well as man vs most teams, as we saw vs Syracuse then we switched to man since we had a better chance in man. Ty is going to pick us apart in man but he would absolutely shred us zone, so what do we do?

This reminds me of '86 when we took a gamble and stacked the box and blizted a ton. Vinny Testaverde had plenty of open receivers and Miami scored early, but we stuck with the blitz and put enough pressure on Testaverde to get sacks and force him to make mistakes. I'm hoping we make similar gamble on Saturday, but I just don't see Banks doing it.
We got to Vinny with 3 down lineman

I think the idea behind that strategy was and still is to limit the big play. Heup likes our defense‘s chances on extended drives to either create turnovers or just negative plays.

They’re getting offense into 3rd and medium to long. But they have to get off the field at a significantly higher rate than they have been. Playing 5 yards of cushion on 3rd and 7 befuddles me. Obviously don’t know more about defense than a SEC DC,
just seems like it’s not working.
That’s absolutely the strategy. I heard one of our coaches talk about that a couple years back. The D coaches bet that an offense can’t consistently string together 13-14 plays without messing up enough that ends the drive. Generally, I’d guess that’s statistically correct. I agree on the cushion, except you have it backwards. They’re usually playing D past the line to gain. Like it’s 3rd and 7 and the DBs are 10 yards back. I’m with you, they know far more than I do, but it does seem like a really bad idea in the surface, especially given the DBs are backpedaling from there, not coming up.

Unfortunately, this defense is by design and we'll continue to play it.
We're making teams take 7-8 plays to score. We hope we will get to the QB or make them turn it over. We can't die a quick death in man. We'll get beat. Our safeties are not good and we have a frosh db starting. We have to play zone, make them use 8,9,10 plays and hope our front 4 can make something happen.
You're not gonna like it, but we definitely aren't playing man against these wr this week very much.
We force LOTS of 3rd downs. We need to get off the field.
Id like to say we could confuse Ty Simpson, but I don't think we can.
Our front 4 need to take over this game and our OLine needs to do the same

Typical Vols fans base... "Banks, why are you playing so soft?? You suck!" Redmond gets burned one on one in back corner of end zone and we lose the game vs Georgia. Vols fan base starts calling for Banks to get fired with ridiculous calls. Sometimes your players are going to make plays and sometimes better players(Georgia) are going to make the plays(ridiculous clutch throw and TD catch) and give you the L. Fans meet the world of sports. We have some great coaches including Banks and we are trending towards beating all our rivals most years. When we have the better or more experienced players... we will be winning the SEC and natty more routinely. We are close! GBO!

We had a pretty darn good defense last year. Obviously, our defensive coaching staff forgot everything that was working.
We had an easy schedule. Defense struggled against teams with an qb who could throw a little. We also a few game breakers who are not on the roster or healthy, as well as some other solid players who aren’t on the field..

Beyond Hood, who has been great, our only portal addition on defense was a 2nd team All Great Lakes Valley conference guy who isn’t playing. Our only true freshman who is playing gets abused and only plays because he has to, not because he is ready. You can’t replace Pearce, ONL, O Thomas, Simmons, Pili, Brooks, McCoy, Gibson with Hood, a D2 guy who can’t play, and a true freshman who isn’t ready now, if he ever will be.

You know it is possible to play tight man on the corners with safety help over the top, right?

The answer to this question is easy, YES, this is a mismatch, Simpson and his receiver's vs our Db's look for a long day, hate to say it but its true.

I could physically see at the game a marked difference with our DB's after the 13:00+ mark of the 4th quarter after we went up 34-17. We were in a very "soft" zone for the most part rest of the game, giving a big cushion at the line. CLEARLY... our DB's still missed several opportunities to make a huge play or two in that 4th quarter (just a step slow usually). I guess in the end it worked but created more drama for sure. I kinda wished we kept the ball in JA's hands more during the last two drives. We finally did at the end to seal the game though. Is our D as bad as everyone is saying? CLEARLY...we are struggling at the second and third levels with speed, physicality and angles.

Yep. An Banks would really like to only commit 4 to the line with his style. It's just not working this year. I like the aggressive concept but it gets torched when they don't get there. Linebackers can't cover in space and too much cushion being allowed behind them makes for a long day, when you don't get home or get a guy off his spot.

While we are a top team in generating sacks / pressure, it seems we need the outcome to be a sack for a fumble or an interception. The tackles for loss have been rendered meaningless, because we regularly play an extremely poor zone on 3rd and long or even 2nd and long . . . And give up chunk plays /
1st downs. Our pass defense on 3rd and long is indeed awful. We have one good corner (Hood) and one who will be good (Redmond). Our safeties are likely the worst in the conference. Letting Thomas go to another team has really come back to bite us. Our safeties cannot cover or tackle.

Who would have thought . . . Will Brooks was this much better as a walk on than any safety we have?

Bottom line - we either sack Simpson and create a fumble we recover / cause him to throw an interception . . . Or he carves us up like a Halloween pumpkin.
I think our biggest problem is giving too much of a cushion.

If you look at season long stats, we are last in the conference in passing YPG allowed.

But if you look at just conference games, we are dead middle of the pack at 9th in the conference with 246 passing yards per game allowed.

Is that really so bad when you consider that teams have to throw on us because we are in high scoring games? I say no.

To be clear, I think our pass D, especially at Star, Safety, and one LB, is poor and not good enough. But it’s not as awful as people are acting like, like it’s the 2012 defense or something.

It’s pretty bad and it’s not far off of 2012 numbers. We are currently giving up nearly 30 points per game and roughly 400 yards.

Not bad because the Vols have been without their two of their best DBs.

The reason it is 9th in SEC play is because State and Arkansas ran all over us and didn't have to throw to move the ball for long stretches.

Anyone remember how all off-season we were told that the 2025 team will lean on it's strong defense and anemic offense w unproven 0* QB and sub-par receiving corp? Hehe, that was some strong analysis there. :-D
