BlueChip's Defensive Matchup vs Alabama - Maybe a Reason to Have Hope

I thought this video did a great job in making a case for our defense matching up stylistically vs Bama's offense. There are some unique perspectives that I haven't read anywhere else.



Key takeaways:

Bama doesn't do much misdirection, which is what causes confusion in our defense. Most of their run game is inside which is good for our LBs. Overall a very simple run scheme that is 101st in the nation.

Most of Bama's passing game is deep outside the numbers. Not alot of checkdowns. Not alot of complex routes..

Bama's OLine isn't that great at pass protection. They hold on to the football as they attempt to go down the field alot. On the other hand, we are healthy on the DLine and #1 in country in sacks.

Bama's WRs aren't physically very big. Our DBs are bigger. Jam Miller is more of a bowling ball thst isn't going to kill you with speed.

BlueChip expects us to run alot of quarter and Cover-0 defense which is what Simpson struggles against. This is becuase Bama's offense likes to throw outside. So if we take those guys inside and bring pressure it causes problems. As long as we stay away from Cover 2 and Cover 1, which is what Simpson excels against, we should matchup well.

I watched this yesterday and Bull crushed the analysis. Highly recommend for those who haven't watched this yet.

I'm always nervous with these big games, but this one feels different. I really think we pull off the upset. I'm not an X's and O's expert, but I've seen most of Bama's games and, while Ty is playing great and I'm happy for him, he does make some bad mistakes when under pressure... that's the one thing we do well on defense. Plus there's something about our defense that's off. I was irate during the Arkansas game but thinking on it later with a sober brain, we had no way of preparing for that game. Defense was given short fields by special teams and the offense against state. Stockton played the best game of his entire life against us. Not sure what to say about Syracuse, but Bull does talk about it in the video above... I just feel like they're due for a game where they clamp down on someone and this would be a great one to do it in.

Anyway... just musings...

They will definitely exceed 400 yds on our defense

There is reason for hope, we are capable of winning. The coaches and players got to believe it and expect it. Football is played on the field, not on message boards listening to opinions that are wrong most of the time! GBO! Go get the WIN

I agree with your perception of the defense. The talent is there, just having to overcome some injuries and slowly getting to full strength.

As for Syracuse, I think Steve Angeli was leading all of FBS in passing yards before he went down with injury. He was shredding apart Clemson's defense in Clemson. I think he may be the best pocket passing QB in all of college football from what he displayed. And while he did have moderate success against us we also made life tough on him with pressuring him and causing him to fumble.

True, they really haven't compiled a ton of yards. Simpson has to carry the load and if he doesn't throw for 300+ yards they are unlikely to hit that mark.

But at the same time the word on their offense is that they like to control the clock with long time-draining drives. They like to limit the number of possessions and therefore yards needed to win. And that does scare me becuase are defense does seem to tire out when TOP is greatly lopsided.

Said it in another thread, the key to this game is DL play. Put Simpson on the ground enough and we win. If he has a clean shirt in the 3rd quarter we lose. UT’s offense will score 35 regardless.

Simpson has been excellent so far but our pass rush should get to him a lot. He is due for a bad game. Most of the talking heads are saying bama wins but Tennessee covers. I think this is going to be a nail biter. Whoever has the ball last wins.
