Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

It won't change the outcome of the game obviously but he should be more professional or should be calling another game . He has a history of disdain towards UT. Remain impartial ffs.
Didn't he call '22 or last year? You could hear the hate in his voice and him trying overly hard to be impartial.

You keep saying do not play zone becuase we are not good at zone. Is that meant to imply that we are good at man? Because missing 2 huge pieces at CB and with LB/S that do not cover well, news flash, we are not good at man either. If you are not good at either, one gives you more opportunities to be successful while the other gets you beat quickly. Man also makes the other QB's decison-making much easier. Man also means that it is easier to hit hot reads to avoid our biggest asset on defense, pass rushers.

Basically, the argument is....yeah I struck out but BY GAWD I was swinging for the fences with all 3 of my swings. Oh wow, congrats!
Lol. It is well known that Ty feasts off of zone. But yes, let’s sit in zone! Genius! And the safeties and LBs don’t have to think as much in man and can play faster. This leads to more turnovers and guys playing faster.

Since you obviously know exactly what to do, please why explain why you would want to sit in zone when our players don’t even follow opposing players entering their zones? We drop and sit which leads to big plays because we aren’t playing it properly.

I would rather keep things simple and give up some chunk plays than exhaust our defense being in the field so much and leaving our offense on the bench for long periods of time. We can score on anyone so why don’t we take even more chances? More chances leads to more turnovers and more opportunities for our terrific offense.

His goal was to force the runner back inside, one of the key fundamentals in defense.

Good/great players accomplish that with intense effort and intelligence to keep him inside while also trying to make a play on him.

Average/bad players can only process that one imperative, DO NOT LET HIM GET THE EDGE, and they aren't physically or mentally capable of doing that while also making a play on the runner.

I'm guessing he's been chewed out many times in life for trying to make a play instead of setting the edge, and he's not good enough to do both reliably, so his default is just do his primary goal of keeping the runner inside unless it's obvious or easy how to do that and still make a tackle.

That's generally what you see in high school and college anyway when someone looks like they're being lazy, setting the edge is drilled into kids at the very beginning of football.
setting the edge is a term used in the box. You push the ball carrier into the mess. That’s not typical terminology for safeties. i don’t know what our safeties are being taught. But when I did play and from what I have learned. As a safety you are last line of defense. You do whatever you can do to cause the RB to pause/stop momentum. There’s typically no one for the safety to push a RB too.
But I’m more curious is him taking hisself completely out of the play by running around the lineman. He turned an already low percentage play into a near 0% play.

Someone may have an example but I don't recall guys like Palmer, Pollack, Stinchcomb, or Cubelic with dip$hit remarks like this towards other schools. He also went out of his way taking a shot at Tony V. after the baseball Vols won it all. Eff that guy!

That's why we should run some 1-Rat and use the rat as a spy against dual threats or as a way to cover the mid crossing routes. I haven't noticed us running robber or 1-rat much, if at all, but I think it could help with the personnel. Then again, if it's crossed my mind to run it, I know Banks has thought of it and there is a reason they don't.
Yeah that was very surprising. We don’t use Boo as spy/robber to play between hash marks on running QB’s. Makes him be able to play free and use his athletic abilities.

Brooks Austin talks about “block avoidance” in his film review ahead of this weekend’s game. UT defenders seem to try to get around blocks instead of striking, engaging, and trying to leave an arm free to make the tackle. The earlier commenter is right that the defender has to force the play back inside, but it does seem like engaging the blocker could slow the play and leave 15 a chance to make a play while also steering the play back inside.
Is he saying that they are teaching them to avoid blocks by running around them? No wonder or run fits suck. You take blocks head on and use your hands to create separation to find ball…

Force the runner inside/set the edge, you don't let the runner get the edge. I don't know what terminology is used, but that's the idea. His play was still "in the box," so setting the edge applies. He was only like 3 yards beyond the LOS right?

First guy to the ball carrier just beyond the LOS is not the last line of defense, he was coming down to stop the run, not on the very back end like safeties usually are (especially high school safeties, they're taught last line of defense because they usually are at that level), so DO NOT LET HIM GET OUTSIDE YOU is what he was clearly focusing on and that was correct, just lazily/poorly executed by doing literally only that.

Yeah, I've never liked him, but did give him the benefit of doubt as an announcer. He should never call a Bama game. I am sure they do this just to get the opposing fans cranked up.

I’m not sure anybody know how the guys are being coached, but this rep and another one by 22 involved the defender going pretty far around the blocker instead.

Used to be "baaaay-bee SHARK! Do do duh doot didoo!"
Id link my son getting his butt whipped by the Dojo owners 8 yo daughter. But, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ imma guess in a few years that'll be him getting the arm bar in, and breakin' arms!

We still sing Baby Sharks every once in a while. My fave story about that is the municipality that plays Baby Sharks on a loudspeaker, 24/7 to dissuade homeless from congregating. Its pretttaaaay prettaaary good.

I actually agree more with your points, but the Film Guy this week did show that against AR we played more zone and when we did - while they had success against us - it took longer. Lol

So if using the bend but don't break philosophy our recent zone attempts took longer to break. Lol

We just aren't an elite defense so no one thing will make it so. I think we need to play multiple but I agree with you make it easy for guys to play faster and smarter. Whatever that is.
