Trump is bailing out Argentina. ‘America first’ is becoming 'Trump first'.

FYP.

Imagine if this were the Biden admin. Bessent's even got history with Soros. The right would be flipping out about this for the entire length of the admin. It's gonna maybe be in the news cycle for a month with this admin?

Last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a $20 billion package to rescue the Argentinian economy. The risky taxpayer-financed deal, which involves trading US dollars for Argentine pesos, has little upside for ordinary Americans. Argentina is not a significant US trading partner, and its economy, long in turmoil, has little impact on the United States.

However, Bessent’s announcement had massive economic benefits for one American: billionaire hedge fund manager Rob Citrone, who has placed large bets on the future of the Argentine economy. Citrone, the co-founder of Discovery Capital Management, is also a friend and former colleague of Bessent—a fact that has not been previously reported in US media outlets. Citrone, by his own account, helped make Bessent very wealthy.

Wow what a joke of a paragraph at the end of your post.

Wouldn't Volnation PF be a better place if people found more common ground through acknowledging when **** is ****ed up on their side? When the admin is in the wrong, we either get "But Biden" or some other kind of deflection, or we get silence. And it works this way for 90% of posters on both sides. We're so uncommitted to our principles that we can't bear the humility of saying something that validates the gripe. There'd be a lot more respect between both sides if people would man up and do this. I guess it's easy for me to say because I don't support anybody, really.

I know it's way too much to ask.

You falsely assume our principles. I am not an isolationist.

Like when the ceasefire in Israel happened and Hamas killed more of their people on the next day than were killed in a single day at any point during the war and you post a fake article blaming Israel for killing 5 people?

The irony of this post alone is astounding

Monty's apoplexy towards all things Trump is approaching that of huff. Whenever she writes, I see that little cartoon of the stick figure that bangs the keyboard so hard the head turns into blood.

huff is off the deep end so far it's hard to calculate his location

Has it? I know I brought it up in there. There is no discussion, though. Everybody slunk out. Nobody made any response at all, specifically about Trump bailing them out. I think it's pretty forgivable for MP to miss a discussion of one post.
I was wrong about the thread, but there was one where we discussed what it meant exactly, and the ramifications for both countries. But I can't find that conversation, so your point remains. maybe it was in the admin thread.

It was discussed if we were "giving" them the money. were they buying it somehow. and IIRC its essentially some type of circular debt loan. Argentina, even after all the cuts, couldn't afford the existing debt payments to US banks. so the US gave Argentina even more money, so that their payments to the US banks would continue. It was also supposed to tie their money even closer to ours, with the US dollar becoming an official currency. the idea being with the cuts, Argentina would be able to pay back the now bigger loan....eventually.

I missed that one, so it's understandable why MP would miss it.

Trump deserves criticism for this. It's probably outright corruption with Bessent, and it's worthy of a thread, especially if you don't even know where the convo happened. It's freaking $20b to a country that is competing with us on soybeans and it doesn't really benefit us at all if they are thriving. Our economies are not intertwined.

Or we just foreclose on the country.

Nice country you got there! Be a shame if something were to happen to it...

It sure would be nice if that were an option but since we have the Federal Reserve our debtor nations will always have the money to pay their interest payments to our private banks.

I agree, which is why I acknowledged your point.

I am pretty sure this bailout would have been given regardless of who was in charge. The Fed doesn't really care as long as the money keeps moving. Trump is in charge, so he gets the blame. but he is hardly the first to say one thing and give money out behind our backs.

‘America First’ is becoming ‘Trump First’ as the president eyes global power

Donald Trump has his finger in an awful lot of global pies for a president who was supposed to put America first.

Trump on Tuesday threatened to disarm Hamas if it didn’t give up its weapons in Gaza, raising speculation about a US military role, and crowed about obliterating another speedboat off Venezuela in his legally dubious war against drug cartels.

In the middle of a US government shutdown that he claims forced him to fire hundreds of federal workers for lack of funds, he dangled a $20 billion economic bailout for Argentina — but only if voters there shore up his scandal-hit populist pal President Javier Milei.

Trump also publicly tossed around Ukraine’s desire for him to send Tomahawk cruise missiles that could strike deep inside Russia. This might risk the direct US clash with Moscow that he spent months warning against on the 2024 campaign trail. But the threat might repair his crumbled prestige after President Vladimir Putin has mocked his peace efforts.

Trump’s new zeal for global entanglements might surprise MAGA voters who thought the president meant to exclusively take care of business at home...
