Defense

Pay attention to how easily TAMU handles Arkansas this Saturday. Why? Because they have a defense. That is all.
U might be right but I still need to see it. They're defense did the same thing our defense did against the cupcakes. They gave up 40 to ND and nobody thinks ND is better than UGA. They got Miss ST but that was right after that RB got banged up against us. The Fla offense has been non existent this year. So idk how good their defense really is. I can totally see Ark putting up 30 in a loss vs them.

Copied the below from an article in Rockytop Insider. Makes the D sound a little better.
--------------------------------------
The Razorbacks’s first nine rushes went for a total of 96 yards. Arkansas didn’t just stay in front of the sticks but created a number of explosive plays on the ground. It was a consistent stream of offense in the first half when Arkansas rushed for 157 yards.

But Tennessee slowed the Razorbacks down a decent bit in the second half. Arkansas rushed for just 83 yards in the second half with a number coming on scrambles. That largely forced Arkansas to be one dimensional, allowing Tennessee’s pass rush to tee off. That group continues to be one of the SEC’s best, recording five sacks
Yeah that’s because arky was passing for big plays at ease. They didn’t have to run.

Who won?

What’s our record?

If we beat Bama by 3, still going to feel miserable?
We gave up two Long TD drives in the fourth quarter while going scoreless ourselves. Basically Arkansas just ran out of time. Pull that against a decent SEC squad and our record will not look so good afterwards.
We were fortunate, not good.

We just played the get the lead and go to prevent defense. 5 Vol players and one Arkansas Player in the endzone on the Arkansas last TD. Not a single player within 3-5 yards of the Arkansas Player

I think A&M and Oklahoma have the best defenses in the conference. Those A&M LBs are the real deal, and their DL has some grown men.

If Tennessee linemen didn't commit three false starts this year, and if just two crucial and very catchable long balls weren't dropped, and if just two really bad calls by the refs hadn't been called, and if one field goal hadn't been missed, we'd be in a different situation right now. Probably undefeated and in the top-3. But I sense that all of those things are easily corrected. I don't think our linemen will false start against Bama. I don't think our receivers will drop the balls that hit them on the hands against Bama. And I think our kicker will make the crucial kicks against Bama. There's no way to know how poorly the refs will do their jobs. But in general, I think our athletes can hang with their athletes.

The key, in my mind, will be Aguilar. I predict his name will be splashed across all the sports pages come Sunday morning. He's gonna have a breakout game.

Now put that into perspective by looking at opponents. Ark has been hanging 60 on nobody’s all year. Up until us ole miss was their only opponent. No one will look back in another 6 weeks and remember “how great Arkansas O was”. Bama has a better offense regardless of the numbers you cherry pick. You’ll find that out in about 6 days.
So, did they not play Notre Dame or is Notre Dame not considered a real opponent? Despite only scoring 13 against ND, they did have 365 yards of offense and 158 rushing. Arkansas ran 30 times for 158 yards against Notre Dame(5.3 ypc) and 45 times for 240 against Tennessee(5.3 ypc). Arkansas only ran the ball 10 times in the second half against ND due to the large deficit. On the road against Ole Miss, Arkansas ran 37 times for 221 yards(6.0 ypc) and had 526 total yards. Offense has not been Arkansas' issue.

We have played our #3 and #4 Corners all year. Run fits have not been good. Yea we have sacks and TFL but we do not have great defensive play this year. Bright spot of the defense is our D line. And none of this is debatable.

Seems your original comment was intentionally trashing Banks and the defense. When you build a defense you put your money into corner and dline. So yeah, if your 2 future NFL guys at corner are both out, your dline is probably your lone bright spot and you’re likely to struggle.

Even then this defense has made a lot of plays. I won’t be surprised at all if they have a high end performance in them pretty soon. Maybe this weekend. Maybe another, but they’re making a ton of plays and have talent it’s just young/inexperienced talent

We let Arkansas have their way with us on defense. They were a 2-3 team. Bama will have their way with us. They have the best receiver Corp in the ncaa right now. This game will show us that we are not ready to face the big boys yet. Our defense was a lot better than this last year and Ohio state did what they wanted to. You can't let teams have an avg of 30 pts per game. Simpson is smart and will pick us a part.
Best receiving corp in the NCAA(Alabama):
Germie Bernard-28 catches/412 yards/5 TDs
Ryan Williams-21 catches/336 yards/3 TDs
Isaiah Horton-21 catches/270 yards/4 TDs

NOT the best receiving corps in the NCAA(Tennessee):
Chris Brazzell-32 catches/536 yards/7 TDs
Braylon Staley-31 catches/431 yards/2 TDs
Mike Matthews-25 catches/416 yards/2 TDs

*Note-All three of our WRs have more receiving yards than Alabama's top WR.

I think the question for the defense is going to be can we get away with just simplifying the scheme. In particular, maybe just settle in for a lot of cover two man all night? If we play zone, Simpson is going to annihilate us, because our defense is out of place way too much. If we have to blitz a lot and play cover zero or cover one, I think Simpson is going to hit us with big plays.

Changing up the defense all night isn't going to fool him and blitzing is going to leave our weak secondary vulnerable if we don't get home. We have to be able to get pressure with the front four, because their OL is susceptible. In my humble opinion, if we play a lot of man to man with help over the top with the safeties that might be our best chance at slowing them down. All I know is what we done did so far ain't worked.

Better to be lucky than good sometimes.

See the fumble vs Arkansas in 98…

Alabama's Jam Miller (concussion) questionable for Tennessee game

Alabama running back Jam Miller is questionable to play Saturday against Tennessee after sustaining a concussion last week, coach Kalen DeBoer said Wednesday.

Miller was hurt late in a 27-24 win over Missouri this past Saturday and entered concussion protocol. During the SEC teleconference, DeBoer said Miller would be listed as questionable when the availability reports are released later this week.
