if one of their citizens was being trafficked by the cartels, or was being kidnapped for ransom and was on the boat they would have a very legit concern.

also if Russia or China just started blowing up boats off our coast, we would be concerned, even if they were drug runners. a small misunderstanding and its an actual civilian boat getting blown up and we have major problems.

Want to eliminate all the cartels and all the violence?

Legalize drugs.

In 2001, Portugal decriminalized all drugs.

24 years later, Portugal has not been run into the ground by a nation of drug addicts. In fact, by many measures, it's doing far better than it was before.

I know plenty of highly-successful, otherwise "normal" people who love coke. They'll do it if it's illegal, they'll do it if it's legal. And they remain highly successful and do it right under the nose of society.

Our "war on drugs" hasn't worked. Anyone who says otherwise... well, read the threatening cartel missives, look at the violence. It all exists *solely* because there's massive money to be made.

Decriminalizing drugs eliminates that.

Ironically, I just looked at the clock and it's 4:20.

Decriminalizing is idiotic. That leaves the cartels a profit center with little risk. It strengthens organized crime.

Hmmm. Not sure I'm understanding you.

I have no empirical data to offer (without going to Grok... which I know you wouldn't read), but I'll offer this:

Chicago. 1930. Al Capone. Alcohol was it's bread and butter.

Once Prohibition ended, the mob's golden goose died and it had to move onto more 'mobster' like activities.

So decriminalizing drugs would do the same, would it not?
