By the most important metrics that contribute to wins and losses, they are good. By the metrics the fans seem hyper-focused on rather than all the successes, they are the worst defense in the SEC.So is our defense good or not?
Allows lots of yards, but gets turnovers is not really a strategy but it’s getting the job done.
They’ll put the offense in a vice grip for one quarter then forget how to play for the rest of the game.
They both caused a lot of headache against Georgia and MS State but also were the reason we beat State with the two touchdowns.
Tennessee’s defense is an enigma.
Well said. It's feast or famine. So is our defense good or not?![]()

Interesting isn’t it.By the most important metrics that contribute to wins and losses, they are good. By the metrics the fans seem hyper-focused on rather than all the successes, they are the worst defense in the SEC.
All about narratives. Booger McFarland called Ty Simpson the best QB in the country lolTried watching some game breakdowns by the talking heads. Lots of talking about our wide splits. Just shows how little they have actually watched or studied Tennessee. Everything being said about Ty Simpson could also be said about Tennessee but you would think he’s the greatest ever. Joey balled out in our only loss and Ty looked lost. God forbid anyone do some actual analysis.
It’s only fun if you’re dogging your own players. Several on here have made it an art form!Ryan Williams, ranked higher at #4 player in the country, drops a lot of wide open passes and has been doing so since stepping on Bama’s campus.
You should watch more college football outside of just Vols games.
PPG ranking can really be thrown out the window because of how many extra possessions our games have due to our offense. YPG is slightly inflated because we have rarely given teams a short field and with our injuries we have used more bend but don't break scheme. Plus we gave up lots of yards with backups in early in the season. It definitely needs to be better but it's understandable and not completely indicative of the product our defense is capable of.Interesting isn’t it.
We are…
105th in YPG
103rd in PPG (32 per game)
35th in third down conversion rate.
27th in YPA (rushing)
4th in FF
6th in take aways
I don’t think anyone would characterize that as either good or bad. If the point of defense is to limit how many points they score, we are ATROCIOUS. But they also win games in nut cuttin’ time![]()
Education and poverty do hurt this region, but so do old myths on eating and what is "nutritious" which comes from farmers' lifestyles that worked just fine when they labored outside 10+ hours a day.Income income income
There is a reason why businesses are moving to this region and it isn't the average life span.
Listened to the Ainge show on Monday and he talked about guys like Boo and our safeties busting coverages and our edge rushers losing contain constantly. Overpursuing. Lots of brain farts costing us. Some of it is Banks and he thinks Banks is going to have to call a multiple game. Can't just sit in zone because someone like Simpson will pick us apart. Gotta try and confuse him and hopefully we won't have so many busted coverages. So is our defense good or not?

The defense has also scored like 2 or 3 TDs already this season...so shave that off.PPG ranking can really be thrown out the window because of how many extra possessions our games have due to our offense. The amount of 3rd and long conversions our opponents have converted is the one really concerning stats. It bleeds into the YPG/PPG. That stat has to improve tremendously, and quickly. If we had been moderately successful at getting off the field on 3rd and long , just that one piece of the puzzle, then fans would have a different view of how our defense has performed.
3rd (especially and long) conversion percentage really is the primary problem. I've really never seen anything like it.PPG ranking can really be thrown out the window because of how many extra possessions our games have due to our offense. People from rural areas are horrifically picky eaters and don't even realize it. Basically my wife's ENTIRE Virginia family. Picky. My Tennessee family. Picky. My Virginia dad. Picky.Education and poverty do hurt this region, but so do old myths on eating and what is "nutritious" which comes from farmers' lifestyles that worked just fine when they labored outside 10+ hours a day.
Not the same lifestyle these days and when diets don't shift along with the new lifestyles...welp you get this map.
Statistically speaking we are the worst at pass defense. And one of the worst in the nation at allowing 3rd and long, one of the best in TFLs and sacks. They are not good. But they are not bad.By the most important metrics that contribute to wins and losses, they are good. By the metrics the fans seem hyper-focused on rather than all the successes, they are the worst defense in the SEC.
