I thought they had a good offense going at UAB. I'm not sure what one can expect for such a program.
He may have had college aspirations, but he wasn't ready. To go from Lipscomb Academy to FBS any team in such a short time was suicide.Dilfer was such a terrible hire. It never made sense from the beginning. He was out of touch recruiting, horrific defensive staff. I'm sure he could get a gig as an OC somewhere if he wanted. But that program was rudderless with him at the helm.
Was he that morbidly obese cat?His predecessor Bill Clark went 49-26 with 2 CUSA Championships and lost in one CUSA Championship game. His worst season was 6-6 his first year. So yeah they probably arent' going to be fighting for a CFP spot anytime soon but they can do better than Dilfer did. I know things have a changed bit since Clark with NIL and all but still, Dilfer was awful.
Not even close. Bill Clark was older but pretty fit.Was he that morbidly obese cat?
The fact that the BOT even remotely considers UAB a threat to Tuscaloosa is wildly delusional. But, I do remember all that washing out in the pot when they killed the program, and then allowed Clark to have it back. It would also make sense as you say in Dilfer getting the nod after Clark built it to what he left behind. Clark' having to constantly bow up to the BOT is maybe what left him in need of back surgery. There couldn't be a more politically charged HC position in CFB out side of UAB.Considering what the Bama BOT did to the UAB program a few years back that hire stinks of keeping that program from becoming a threat

Having said that, and not just for UAB, there are some interesting names available or openings if they can redeem themselves:
Ed O wants to return to coaching
Brent Pry
Clint Killough (Doing very well at Incarnate Word /FCS)
Tom Herman (Did better at UH than wrong UT, but for some reason hasn't had a look since)
Dan Mullen (If he'd consider UAB a move back up. Might be a good look for Arky. If he did it at MSU, he could do it there.)
And if healthy and desiring a return, Clark is a great choice to court.
Seems as though Herman was just a quick flash in the pan at Houston then. Even with a so-so tenure at Texas and dismal season and a half at FAU, he still has a 60-36 record and 5-0 in bowl games. His washout at Texas had as much to do with off field handlings as it did his record. Players not staying on field to sing the song really gouged some people. If he has an arrogance issue though, he's been branded.Tom Herman got the job at one of the smaller Florida schools a few years ago. I wanna say Florida Atlantic? He lasted two seasons-didn't win much at all and got canned after last year.
That's his second firing so I would say he is done as a HC. I heard from more than a few people I know in Austin that he had Derek Dooley disease-thought himself the smartest guy in the room (and maybe he was), but he irked people greatly
For Dan Mullen, moving to UAB from UNLV would be a step down in the year 2025. Before the program got nixed and revived-maybe. Since they came back though, they haven't been much
Chances are-and given how the carousel is spinning already-Mullen may be the #2 or #3 guy available. He is pretty much gonna get his pick of jobs.
There's a clip of Dilfer, right after he got the job, going on a radio show in B'ham (I think) and saying that his schedule as UAB HC would be less busy than when he was coaching Lipscomb Academy. UnbelievableDilfer was such a terrible hire. It never made sense from the beginning. He was out of touch recruiting, horrific defensive staff. I don't think they actually considered UAB a threat...it was just pettiness and grudge-holding on the part of Bear Bryant Jr.The fact that the BOT even remotely considers UAB a threat to Tuscaloosa is wildly delusional. Yep. Blocked UAB's board from hiring Jimbo Fisher in 2006, then was instrumental in killing the program a few years later. Had to do with a UAB basketball (yeah basketball, it didn't even involve football) coach in the 90s writing a letter to the NCAA urging them to investigate Alabama basketball. Also made a passing comment in the letter that various assistants under Bear Bryant who got popped by the NCAA were "trained" by Bear Bryant. That strikes a bell. Bear Jr.
I don't remember Fisher being a UAB HC candidate. Must have been pre-FSU promotion. Worked out better for him anyway.Yep. I'm sure there's some kind of interesting back story there with a coach from inside the UA system trying to bring down the state's flagship school, and Bear Jr. never forgot it.
