Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Just did a film breakdown of Bama vs Vandy and Bama vs Georgia. Here is what I noticed. They is no full game on Missouri yet, so I didn't watch.

- Poster said Sunday that Bama doesn't run the ball well. That's true in terms of big plays. They are more of a ball control run offense that lacks explosiveness. They primarily use the run to set up play action and keep defenses honest.
- Simpson is a zone defense buster. He feasts off of zone defense. More on this next.
- Simpson only threw 3 total deep balls in both games. One was under throw but caught by Williams against Vandy (right). One was a perfect deep throw against Georgia and Williams dropped (middle). Last was a deep throw right and overthrown to Bernard. Most of Simpsons deep throws tend to be high.
- Against Vandy, the only contested throw over 10 yards was the deep ball to Williams. All other pass plays over 10 yards were wide open due to holes in the zone. Only seven throws were more than 10 yards in the air.
- Against Vandy 5 passing plays that went over 10 yards were simple dump offs or screens and all yardage after catch.
Against Georgia he only completed 6 passes that traveled in air over 10 yards. 5 of them were over the middle and many set up by scrambles.
- Against Georgia, 7 pass plays that went over 10 yards were dump off or shorts screens that led to yardage after catch.

Ty Simpson is a typical take what the defense gives you. He almost never throws where he is first looking except for screens. He typically moves LB's and Safeties out of the middle with his eyes and then attacks the middle. He leads drives late in the first half with ease against prevent defenses. He kills zones. He scrambles enough and typically on 3rd and long. He is best on balls in air over 10 yards when he is outside of the pocket. My advice to CTB:

-Don't bite on play action. Just hit the QB.
-Don't be tricked by his eyes. That is how the middle opens up.
-Do not blitz LB's. He lives in the middle. Bring corner blitzes like Miami does.
-He typically only throws outside if defense is in zone.
-We need to wrap up and not go for the big hit. That's how they killed Georgia.
-Jam the WR's all day
-DT's better get their hands up and stay in the middle. Vacating middle is a trap.
-He throws 1-2 picks a game, better catch them. Georgia let him off the hook twice.
-Their kicker sucks, so look for them to go on 4th down often. That means do NOT play soft zone on 3rd and long when they are on our side of the field. They will be looking to get 7-9 yards and go for it on 4th. Do NOT play soft zone on 2nd and long on their side of the field. He looks to get 5-7 yards to set up short 3rd downs. That is what they want.

Also, Vandy has a better defense than Georgia. Georgia had zero pressure on Simpson the entire game. Vandy had 4 sacks, and most were huge losses. If Vandy and Georgia didn't turn the ball over and just took the points (FG's) they both probably win.

He's taught to keep the play off the edge. Make the tackle if you can, but definitely don't let him outside. In that instance he had to fight a blocker to keep his outside leverage and force the runner inside. It's a very dangerous area of a play, because you're counting on someone to beat their block and catch him turning back inside or have help from the 2nd safety or nickel before he breaks it open for more than 10-15.
Touché, I’m just very annoyed with safety play.

Cignetti would be crazy to take Penn State job.

That fan base would eat him alive after a couple of seasons if not living up to their expectations.

Indiana loves Cignetti and to me making the playoffs every other year or a 9-3 record and being Bowl Eligible will satisfy that fan base .. whether the Basketball team is underachievers or not, Indiana is a Basketball school first and the success of the football program comes in second. Cignetti should just take his $8-10 million Indiana will pay him and live a happy life in Indiana.

Arkansas is really the best offense we've faced thus far...and they're a lot more difficult to stop than a Georgia or even Bama because Green is a 1st round QB talent.

Still we lead the SEC in sacks. But Bama's offensive strength is our defensive weakness... if we can't get pressure on Ty with 4 or 5 then it's going to be an ugly shootout type of game.

We get pressure on him and I think he'll play closer to how he did at FSU than he did against Wisconsin.

They've cleared 40 points only once this year...this isn't a juggernaut type Bama team on either side of the ball.

UL Monroe game propped them up statistically and the only other game they've not been in a dogfight for was against 2-4 Wisconsin at home

Yet Georgia scored more than Arkansas. Hmmm

Damn. Leading the SEC in sacks and being last in scoring defense and YPG is such a terrible indictment of the backend.

Alright. Last negative post of the week lol

I think what some folks forget is this...

1. he's already making 8m a year at Indiana where he has built the program and is beloved
2. he's already in a P4 conference and already competing for championships

What realistically can Penn State offer this guy? More stress in a worse area to live... I mean Indiana is a basketball first school, but he gets paid well and they have NIL funds. At his age (64) I just don't see him wanting to uproot for arguably a parallel move. Other than a bigger stadium and probably better facilities it doesn't seem worth it.

Cause if he wins a Natty at Indiana...he'll be able to pick the location of his statue.
