Was joking with a buddy here in the Philippines, a huge Oregon fan. He asked how we were doing after their miserable evening ( morning here). I told him about our defense. The best description I could give is that we are a big play defense, either making a big play or giving up a big play. Hopefully going forward, they continue to make more than they give up.

At this point in the season, we pretty much are what we are. Only potential to shore things up more, IMO, is to get a corner back, and modify coverage. I know we didn't want to give up any gash plays, and I didn't notice if we were playing two high safeties when our CBs were 10-15 yards off their WRs, but when they were closing the gap and going up and down the field at will, and you're trying to get off the field on 3rd down, at some point, you have to not play so soft.

The opportunity w/ Bama will be to get to the QB, which I think we will. If not, they will carve us up, especially if we can't stop the run and they are able to be balanced. Formula to beat Ark will not be so different than Bama. Will need sacks and turnovers, esp at Bama home field.

Bama has a freshman RT that got abused by Mizzo yesterday. UT needs to attack him all game.

What I see wrong with our defense
1) we stunt and twist our d line. This causes us to get sacks but also gives up big run plays
2) our two best corners are hurt. Injuries happen
3) our safety play has been sub-standard. Not sure who coaches them but we have not had good safety play in years
4) I do not know what is wrong with Boo but his play has been sub-standard
Add all of that together and you get our defense.

Too many miscommunications on the back end of the defense. Banks coaches safeties and there’s ZERO excuse for us to not understand zone principles.

That last TD was a joke. We played off, Green scrambled to his right and threw down the middle of the field. 3rd and 10. Can’t happen.

Boo in coverage outside the box isn’t good but if we keep him in the box, spy or blitz he is pretty good due to his closing speed and willingness to hit. He doesn’t have to think. Go get the ball.
I don’t find too much fault with an aggressive player who is asked to turn and run to a spot on 3rd down with no regard wo what WRs are doing. The amount of times we have safeties 25 yards from the qb on 6-7 yard passes is frustrating. Get off the field

I've heard several on here blame Tim Banks and say we dont have a talent problem, but I think we have a very big talent problem.

Not having our two starting CB's, McCoy and Gibson on defense has hurt us this season. Losing Jourdan Thomas for the season didn't help either. Not to mention letting Miami come in and purchase Tyler Baron and Jakobe Thomas right from under our noses as well. Thats FOUR DB'S and one DE that wouldve been starters or major contributors to our defense, GONE! We can say "next man up" all we want, but the reality is we dont recruit on the same level as Alabama, Georgia, OSU, Texas, etc and losing that many starters/contributors on defense adds up and has a major impact on our production on that side of the ball! And besides Colton Hood, we didnt do much of anything in the transfer portal to try and subsidize losing all that production.

Also, like I said before, yall can disagree with me all you want but we are weak up front, compared to last season. I can see it. Even with everybody back, I just dont see any real stone cold "dudes" on that D-Line that act as "bollards" to prevent RB's from getting to the 2nd level. And we cant set an edge to save our lives!

So we can blame Banks all we want, but to deny that personnel isnt a big factor here is false IMO. Why do you think our 2026 recruiting class has double the number of defensive recruits VS offensive recruits?

Blew that Big play at midfield last night. Questioning play calling but why not go for it on 4th since you were gifted the ball? Just don’t see CJH as aggressive as in the past

This. We just don’t have the 4&5 star depth on the defensive to be able to have key injuries without suffering a drop in performance.

It's a 50/50 probability each play of our defense either getting a tackle for loss or being gashed for a 40 yard run....also 50/50 of our defense getting a sack or having busted coverage and seeing a WR being wide open with no one in 10 yards of them.

Go figure.

We are an all or nothing defense, and it WILL come back to bite us.
Why mention Baron? Were the best pass rushing team in America.

Letting Thomas go was fine if we kept Charles.
But…we didn’t. We let too many safeties go and then didn’t replace them with anyone at all. And they needed a talent upgrade even with Thomas and Charles on the roster.

It’s obvious obvious over talent at safety is a big problem.

Baron still wouldve been a contributor and a huge depth piece.

The point I was making was our depth is not at a level where we can just peel guys like this off our roster and not expect to see the impact on the field. Thats why when I see the "next man up" posts I get frustrated because thats NOT where we are at as a program. I dont think its a Banks issue, its a personnel issue.

Baron plays for the Jets now. Safety is the biggest concern. They should have picked up a portal player. Farooq has been a disappointment and Turentine has never been a SEC caliber safety. McMurray has also been terrible on pass D, he gets lost to often. Redmond has vastly improved at CB and is getting better in run support. Walton played well at times last night, hopefully we will see more of him and Perlotte.

The front 7 either win the day through talent or playcalling and poor preparation render big plays.

IOWs, talented bunch of guys with a questionable DC.

Baron was a senior last season, so no he wouldn’t have been doing anything for us this year

That’s why he left last season, it was his last year and he wanted a pay day

Also we damn well better be at that level of a program against programs like Arkansas, which we are. It’s scheme and coaching that is the issue
