The TSIO is here! It’s officially Bama hate week, and man, I do not like a single thing about Alabama and its corrupt paws that are still somehow sunk into the entire SEC and those who run it. First, let’s be thankful we finished the game yesterday with a win. Should have been a little more comfortable, but like always, we get way too conservative way too soon. I wish Josh would hurry up and learn his lesson that he has to keep his foot on the gas when Tim Banks is your defensive coordinator. Here we are though…5-1 and where we hoped we would be when this week came around. Yes, we should be 6-0, but we got too conservative that game, too, when we could have finished it. We have to move on and keep finding ways to win. That’s where Josh seems to be really good. It may not be pretty, but his guys seem to find a way to win way more than they lose. Let’s look at the keys to the game this week that will help us leave Tuscaloosa with a win!
- Who is calling the game? I hate to have to make this the first key to the game, but let’s all be honest…we saw how much the zebras let Arky hold our DL yesterday with only 2 penalties actually being called (one declined). Do you think there is any way possible that it won’t be worse next week in Tuscaloosa??? I expect it will be ugly. We will have to not have any procedure penalties to get behind the sticks. Need a clean game in that aspect, because you can guarantee there will be plenty of questionable holds, DPI, etc to cause plenty of damage to us. I’m going on record that we will have either Kyle Olson or Ken Williamson (which is who was at the helm for that monstrosity of officiating in the Auburn/Georgia game last night).
- Who all is injured for both teams? Will Bishop and Staley be full go or no go? Is Jam Miller possibly out? That would be a big loss for them. Any chance we see McCoy this week? Probably not, but man, we could really use him! Is Hobbs ok, because he was starting to wreak havoc later in the game. Hope we are relatively healthy, and can see McCoy for the first time.
- Tim Banks, can we see a defense consistently called like you called in the 3rd quarter yesterday? We actually were aggressive at the LOS, not only pressuring QB but disrupting running lanes. I want to see a defense called like that most of the game. We need to get pressure on Simpson. He is very accurate throwing the ball when given time, but he tends to panic when he is pressured. They are ok running the ball, but not great. I expect to see us try to stop the running game with front 4 and have as many in coverage as possible against their elite WRs. They have some really good ones. Defense absolutely has to hold their offense under 30 points to give our offense the chance to win the game.
- Which offense do we see? Sometimes we look unstoppable, especially when we go with tempo, but when we try to slow it down, we look inept a lot. We just don’t function well running clock. I would love to see Heupel put his foot on the pedal a whole game. I think Bama is very susceptible on defense. I expect to see us run the ball well, but I think Brazzell explodes back on the scene this week and has another big game, as does Joey!
- Special teams: I usually don’t mention this but I think this will be a very close game, and it’s going to come down to who has the best kicker. I honestly think we have the edge there.
Prediction: I expect this to be a 4 quarter slug fest. IF we can get just a couple penalties against them early to stop them from holding us with impunity, then I really like our chances on the road. However, as much as we want that to happen, we know that it won’t. I think 30 is the number. We have to score 30 to win, and defense has to hold them under 30. I expect we see our most complete game of the year despite playing against Bama and the refs. The Vols win this one in a close one on a game-ending FG by none other than Max Gilbert to avenge his miss against Georgia!
