I am sick of contractors around here that just don't seem to give a fart about your business. We had a contractor come out and give an estimate for some damage repair. Roughly $5000 estimate. We pondered for a few days and called back to schedule the work. "She isn't in this week so we will call next week to schedule". I thought that was odd, but I went along with it. The week came and went without a call so on Friday afternoon I called them back. "Oh we have her scheduled to call you on Monday". Well why did you say you would call last week then? "I don't know". Monday comes, no call. I call this morning and politely tell them since they can't seem to do the simple things like make a phone call we don't trust them to do the repair work. She said she called yesterday afternoon and I told her I have no missed calls and no voicemail. She then got snippy and hung up. Good lord.
I was a contractor for 20 years. Not communicating with the customer is the kiss of death. Or it was. What is wrong with these entitled people?

Yeah it was a lady who came out and gave the estimate. Whatever. I don't care who you have doing the job, I expect it to be done right and if the person says I will get a phone call, then by gosh I should get a phone call. Me having to hound a contractor to even get on the schedule is just plain stupid. I mean, the job would likely take 2-3 days and they get paid about $5000. Heck yes I am making a phone call.

There’s massive growth in a lot of areas.
5000$ is a very small job to most companies and they’re sitting on 6 months work or more. That breeds apathy among workers who don’t own the business.
I retired for 2 weeks a while back. When my non compete ran out I went back to work. I’m currently still on a 9 month-year wait. And I have nobody in Que who I have not worked for several times. It’s just me, my 2 sons and a select few subs. Stories like this is why I have it so good.

Still, 5k for a couple days work is something I would not skip a phone call over. Similar story with the competitor we got to come and put eyes on it. We never even got an estimate from them. The only other company that was remotely interested wanted $250 to show up and give an estimate. Of course that went towards the bill if we hired them. Screw that. Sounds like an easy way to make $250 to me. Never in 20 years as a contractor did I charge anyone for a job estimate.

I guess I know how my next couple weekends are gonna be spent.

I’m telling you.
Right now it takes 20k to get taken seriously. Nobody wants to do 5 when they can do 25.

It won’t last forever but that’s where we are right now. Unless you know someone like me. And I only work for people I know and like.
