TENNESSEE SOCCER⚽️ #4 LADY VOLS @ #21 VANDY 10/19 5PM ESPN2

Defending was there. Possession was there. We had plenty of shots. We just could not put any quality on the shots. Most shots were not close. And those that did make it on goal were easy for the keeper. I liked the move of Mattern to the left side late. She loves to go right dominant, so it allows her to cut in. Defenders for Oklahoma were almost giving her the cut inside when she was on the right side. Maybe move Robinson around on the field a little bit when nothing is going for her, like tonight. Although, I thought it would be just a matter of time before we pushed one through. Scoring goals is hard unless you are Notre Dame!

NORMAN, Okla. - The No. 3/4 Tennessee soccer team secured its 11th shutout of the season after earning a 0-0 result on the road at Oklahoma.

UT (11-1-2, 5-1-1 ) is just one shutout shy of the program's single-season shutout record after earning a clean sheet against the Sooners (9-3-3, 2-3-2). Additionally, The Lady Vols extended their unbeaten streak to six matches and maintain a +27 goal-differential through 14 matches.

Tennessee outshot OU 16-to-8 on Thursday.

Cayden Norris was once again in goal for the Big Orange and registered three saves--which puts her season total at 33. Norris' first save of the night came in the second minute of the match when Oklahoma's Hadley Murrell kicked it to the bottom left corner of the net which was the only shot on goal for either team in the opening frame.

Tennessee midfielder Mac Midgley applied some pressure after the break and put a pair of shots on goal in the 55th and 76th minutes but was unable to break through. Roughly four minutes later, Bella Smith created UT's final chance of the night, but OU's Caroline Duffy secured her third save of the game.

OU also created a pair of late chances in the 82nd and 85th minutes, but Norris secured the clean sheet and her 10th win in goal of the season. The Johnson City, Tennessee, native currently holds a 0.40 goals-against average.

UP NEXT: The Lady Vols return home and are set to host Florida Thursday in a 7 p.m. ET contest at Regal Soccer Stadium.

Side note, with the draw the Lady Vols are headed to Pensacola. Tennessee and Arkansas are the only two teams to have clinched a spot in the SEC Tournament so far. Twelve of Sixteen make it to the beach.
Meaning, extra motivation for the teams we'll be facing.
Feels like our challenge now is to continue improving as a team, even as we're losing players to injury.

Penalty shots is the way to go... Could play an extra 10-15 minutes for OT period then if no winner shoot penalty shots...
I dunno...
I'm guessing that at this skill level, the goalie is more often just guessing left/right in anticipation of the kick. You might achieve the same results just having your goalie call 10 consecutive coin flips.

Or, you could roll out a barrier to block the middle 20 feet of the goal and give each team 10 penalty kicks that cannot touch the ground before clearing the goal line. More skill / less chance.

Penalty kicks are great theater for the fans--nerve wracking and intense. But I wonder what today's players and coaches think of 'em? Players would probably rather play an extended period. But an extra period in the college game creates chaos with travel logistics and player recovery time that could effect the subsequent match. Coaches and trainers might vote no.

💡What about the traveling team being rewarded an extra tenth of a point for a tie on the road? -- a tie-breaker among ties! That could make for some very exciting end-of-season matches when tourney spots are on the line.

And with an extra tenth of a point on the line, a tie on the road might get compared to "kissing your (hot step-)sister!"
[...to update the old adage, that goes back at least into the 1890s, lest anyone unfamiliar with it read something overfamiliar into such familial familiarity]
