Is he shredded, or is he “big”?

Hypertrophy can get you shredded if you do enough reps even with light weight, but to get “big” with only 20lb dumbbells you would need to be chemically supplementing.
He's probably not bigger than he was a couple months ago. He just looks more "in-shape", you can tell he's been doing something. Probably trimmed off some fat and looks more defined

There is a dude at work that has been getting ripped. A few people think he must be on the juice.

I asked him this morning what he's doing to get bigger. He said eating and lifting in his backyard. I said "weights are expensive now", because I saw some for about $2/lb. . . he said he only uses two 20lb dumbbells for all his lifting.

Can you get jacked from only lifting 20lb dumbbells?
Herschel walker was known for not using weights, essentially using only the weight of his body for all his exercises. So I guess it depends on your definition of jacked, as in more muscular/less fat, or just bigger. But I would presume the answer is yes. Intensity and technique/form more important than amount of weight.

He doesn't look like a meathead body builder type of jacked. He looks more like an outside linebacker. . .

I wonder if he can get me some gear. . .

To me it all depends on body type, mesomorph, ecto, endomorph. Age, genetics, etc. My recommendation is Strength training starts early in day with trunk muscles. 1 hour of cardio in addition

Later in day 20 lb weights hit the detail work. So the, 'I'm just working out in back yard,' **** is ****.

If a man lifts 20 lb weights all day, to high repetition. Esp if he's a naturally sinewy person, but you're just adding muscle onto.
I think you’re full of shite. Sounds like something I’d read on a Facebook “fre” life changing “personslized” workout plan.

I definitely believe you can do this with 20 lb dumbbells and without steroids, if you work hard enough (and often enough) and eat right.

Yes it’s 90% about what you eat.

October 8, 1918,
A proud Tennessean

United States Corporal Alvin C. York reportedly kills more than 20 German soldiers and captures an additional 132 at the head of a small detachment in the Argonne Forest near the Meuse River in France. The exploits later earned York the Medal of Honor.

The events of October 8, 1918, took place as part of the Meuse-Argonne offensive—what was to be the final Allied push against German forces on the Western Front during World War I. York and his battalion were given the task of seizing German-held positions across a valley; after encountering difficulties, the small group of soldiers—numbering some 17 men—were fired upon by a German machine-gun nest at the top of a nearby hill. The gunners cut down nine men, including a superior officer, leaving York in charge of the squad.

Several other American soldiers followed York’s lead and began firing; as they drew closer to the machine-gun nest, the German commander—thinking he had underestimated the size of the enemy squadron—surrendered his garrison of some 90 men. On the way back to the Allied lines, York and his squad took more prisoners, for a total of 132. Though Alvin York consistently played down his accomplishments of that day, he was given credit for killing more than 20 German soldiers. Promoted to the rank of sergeant, he remained on the front lines until November 1, 10 days before the armistice. In April 1919, York was awarded the highest American military decoration, the Medal of Honor.

I can assure you, i'm not full of **** when it comes to diet and exercise. While I dont have a masters of exercise science degree, got life experience.

What works for me, wont work for someone with different body type/genetic makeup.

You can over simplify it, calorie gap, diet. To me its uses and gratification. Do you desire to be healthier, do you want to gain mass, do you want to be leaner?

All those things require dedication and time.

I have a friend who smoked, and drinks heavily every day. He also gets up off the couch in his 40's and runs 3-5 miles a day. Genetics, dedication, and hard work.

He aint lifting 20 lb weights in his back yard on weekend. For some folks, you gotta start somewhere.

Have you ever read about his workouts? Your comparing a guy in his backyard with 20 lb weights to one of the most genetically freakish athletes to ever play CFB.

1500 pushups a day. Hey, if y'all are doing that many. That's amazing. I'm just saying what works for one person, likely, won't work for another.

Ill defer to smyrna and nicksjuzunk for rest.

Probably depends pretty significantly on your definition of “ripped.” But doing calisthenics type bodyweight work can be effective, so just depends what he’s doing.

Bigger question to me is- what does eating in the backyard have to do with it?
“Eating….and lifting in his backyard.” I think that’s what he meant.

@Glitch question. And ive been waiting to ask for some time. Why is it called 'overseeding?'

That term drives me nuts.

IF its over seeded, shouldnt it just be seeded?

Recently paid some folks to 'over seed', perhaps they should reevaluate.

I think so, too. I’m certainly not a workout guru or even very, very fit. I never enjoyed lifting weights and mainly did cardio for years. Starting January 1, I started using 25 pound dumbbells at home to supplement with cardio (because it was still cold outside). While not even close to ripped, I have certainly started getting more definition in the upper body. I lost 15 pounds in the spring and continue to lift.

It's somewhat paradoxical but for many people, especially those with a lot of existing muscle, getting lean and losing body fat (and thus actual body weight) can actually make them look bigger despite the fact they weigh less and their measurements are smaller. Defined muscles look bigger than muscles covered by fat, even when the latter measures larger.

Also for men getting more of a V-taper makes you look bigger, which is another side effect of building muscle and losing fat.
