Spurrier versus the Vols, the real story

I'll remain utterly convinced to the end of time that the loss to Tennessee broke him. All that Grossman Heisman talk, all the high flying scores, and then his favorite chew toy rumbled into the Swamp and took a bite of him for a change. He was done after that. No national title, no Heisman quarterback, and Spurrier had to sit there and watch his Gators earn blowout bowl game win against a Maryland team in a game that no one cared about - him included. Completely done after that.
I agree, he lost his edge after that game. It was definitely the most talented team he ever coached. They were loaded on both sides of the ball. No one gave us a shot and I didn't really think we'd win.

He was 9-4 against Phil Fulmer (7-2 at Florida, 2-2 after getting to USCe). The Florida Spurrier vs Tennessee Fulmer contest, usually for the SEC crown, was the rivalry that first comes to mind when you talk about Spurrier vs Tennessee, the primary source of the assessment that it was badly lopsided in Spurrier's favor. Peyton going 0-4 against him (which fits inside the Fulmer years like one of those Russian dolls) contributes as well.

Johnny Majors was 3-2 vs Spurrier (1-1 while he was at Duke, then 2-1 when he moved to Florida).
Lane Kiffin beat USCe-Spurrier his one season as Tennessee's coach.
Derek Dooley was 0-3 against him.
Butch Jones caused him to retire from coaching, beating Spurrier in both 2013 and 2014 after which he quit mid-season before facing the Vols again in 2015.

So the 3 doofuses (not including Pruitt, he arrived too late to face Spurrier) were actually 3-3 vs Steve.

The man certainly seemed to have Phil Fulmer's number.

Go Vols!
I think it's funny that Tenn coaches were the primary cause of Bear Bryant getting out, Spurrier getting out, and then Saban leaving They couldn't handle losing to the VOls I saw a Sportscenter special on Spurrier and we knocked Florida out of a title run, forgot the year but Spurrier said that really got to him.

Peyton couldn’t beat him in college but go on to the NFL he was horrible at playing at coaching meanwhile PM got multiple awards and two super bowls. It wasn’t Peyton’s fault the defense stunk against him in college of course he scored a lot on every team.
Peyton threw the ball with a little more speed in the Florida games and his receivers didn’t have the hands to hold on to those passes. Kent and Nash had great speed, but their hands were probably what kept them from doing well in the pros.

People forget that Florida State put his starting RB out for the season the game before ours. Spurrier was ticked at Foley for not standing up for him in that situation. Plus, they had like 6/7 turnovers vs our 3/4 in that game.

Spurrier always gave credit when credit was due but, he always told it like it was. I think it was the 2000 game or maybe the 2001 game we won where he said sometimes the best (or better) team doesn’t win.

It was either the run up to one of his Florida game or a Bama game where one of our players commented that the coaches tense up during the week of big games.

I think Spurrier probably would be better in today’s NFL with the way they protect the QB and WRs. Probably not winning a SB but definitely would have had a better record.

Yup wasn't nobody beating that 96 Nebraska squad. IMO they were the greatest team to ever take the field.

I gotta go with 95 Nebraska. Closest margin of victory was 14. Beat 4 top ten teams by an average of 49-18 and just straight ran the ball down your throat. 400 yards rushing a game. Geez!!! Averaged 7 yards a carry.

And ended it with an absolute beat down on Spurrier.

Just a bunch of nasty, mean future convicts.😂

I think we changed our identity after Manning left. We tried to out-Florida Florida for years, when we should’ve been hitting them in the mouth and playing a more physical brand of football. We should’ve won or had the opportunity to beat Florida from 98 to 01. We outplayed them in 3 of those 4 and should’ve stolen that one in 99 after Grant’s pick. Don’t get me started on 2000. The key to beating Spurrier’s teams was to play fast and physical on D and run the ball effectively. We put a pretty good hurting on Palmer, Johnson and Grossman during that 4 year span.

Watching him vs Fulmer was like watching Bugs Bunny vs Elmer Fudd. It was a hard time to be a Vol.
Spurrier dissected defenses like few others could do…his offensive attack forced teams to change the type of of players they recruited/played. I remember some Vol teams with big powerful, linebackers getting killed when those guys had to cover running backs on pass routes…we started playing smaller, faster guys at Linebacker - guys who were more like strong safeties and those big linebackers started bulking up and becoming fast defensive linemen…
