Good horror?

I thought "Weapons" was pretty good.

Also, another I would recommend is "Kill List".
Oh yeah. I saw Weapons at the theater two weeks ago. It was really good. And some parts were hilarious. At times, I was wondering if it was meant to be a horror-comedy. But it was a really good movie. I enjoyed it.

Anyone got a good horror novel they’d recommend as we enter October? I just read The Hunger by Alma Katsu. It was on a list I stumbled upon, but it was a major let down.

Ok, 3 updates:

28 Years Later. Weird movie. I liked the original the best in that series. I’ve seen worse but I sure wouldn’t go out of my way to see it. 2/10

Werewolves (2024 movie). Pretty sure someone said, what if we remade the Purge, but with werewolves? Dumb premise. The movie is what you’d expect. It’s an ok action movie but not remotely scary and not a typical werewolf movie at all. 3/10

Finally, Bring Her Back. Been looking forward to this one for a while. It wasn’t at all what I expected but I liked it. I don’t often cringe but I did a time or two in this one. Not as scary as I was hoping but a good one for sure. 8/10.

What's the verdict?
Sorry ... been slacking on this thread.

Bring Her Back .... 7/10

It had its moments, but overall, kind of a disappointment based on what I had heard going in.

I actually liked "Together" a little more. 8/10.

Good story, with an underlying theme concerning co-dependent relationships.

It's that time of the year .... 🎃

Will be posting some reviews of my favorite "classic" horror movies, and throw in some overlooked/underrated movies. The 1970's was the golden age of horror. There are many to talk about just from that decade.

I ❤️ October!

BHB looked a bit too weird for my interests. Glad to see this review. I’ve been rewatching the Conjuring movies because 4 is in theaters. 1 is fantastic, 2 is okay, and I quickly realized why I couldn’t remember anything about 3 as it was easily forgettable with a pretty terrible plot and 0 scary moments.

Bring Her Back 7.5/10. It was good for a horror movie. A couple moments where I had to look away for a second. It was more gorey than I thought it was going to be. Story was predictable with not many twists. Definitely worth a watch, probably a top 3 horror flick of the year.

The Black Phone 7/10. My wife picked this one out, honestly was better than I thought it would be going into it. Some similar vibes to "It" which I didn't hate.

Personally I lean towards the psychological thrillers than the ghosts/supernatural/satanic/exorcist type. Next up on my list:

Identity
Prisoners
Memento

Memento is a good movie but not a horror.

Not a movie but I’m at Epic universal and the dark realm is awesome. Going back to check it out at night. The Frankenstein ride was great. Sadly, no one in my family likes horror so no Hollywood horror nights again

Add another one saying Bring Her Back is one of the better horror movies of the year. I enjoyed it. I’m seasoned and will second what I read a bit earlier in this thread. I hardly ever cringe. If you’ve seen it you know the scene. Yes, I cringed lol absolutely hair raising to imagine doing that to yourself.

I was surprised there wasn’t more
ritual/occult and that there never really was much explanation as to where that process came from.

They pulled it off well though, despite that.

It was brutal. Wife and I both had to look away. Excellent.

I was surprised too, especially considering it seemed to actually work. Maybe they're saving the backstory for the 2nd one.

Me too. The guys who directed this are twin brothers. The only other major film they’ve done that I’m aware of is Talk To Me, which I also really enjoyed. From what I’ve read the movies are in the same universe loosely. I’d like to see them tie it up a bit in a future release.

Good to have some promising new directors to the game. I like Ari Aster too. Hereditary and Midsommar and both excellent.

What was that movie from the 1980s with the little creatures and a demon God coming out of hell in a hole in a kid's back yard?...The Gate maybe? was so disturbing to watch as a child....especially that part with the eyeball in his hand lol

Great "gateway" horror. Scary enough for younger viewers without scarring them. I saw a number of movies, Jaws for one, that might have been a bit much for me at the time.
