Watching some of the other games this weekend spooked me. I watched FL, AL, and OK defenses pretty closely. One thing stood out about all 3 teams, how aggressively they worked at striping balls. I admit that I was envious as to how well they were executing ball strips. They weren't just trying to knock it loose with hard hits, they were punching the heck out of the ball all game long. Straight goblin mode. Everyone carrying the ball had 2-3 pairs of hands constantly slapping at the ball. We aren't good at protecting the ball. I hope we can prepare and be ready. If not, those are going to be long days.

If we had been anymore aggressive with Shapen it would have moved more into the felony area.

I won't argue the point but again, those fumbles were more from getting trucked than stripping. Those defenses were swatting at everything in the stadium. I even saw one go in the stands and swat the microphone out of the play by play announcers hand. It was so pervasive that I couldn't help but notice how unusual it was to see this much effort put into it. UCLA was doing it too.

Our fumbles this season have come from bad snaps, miffed punts, or bad handoffs.
I don’t recall our RB’s or WR’s after catches fumbling one time.
I'm not saying they do just drop the ball. But I'm telling you that if they swat at the ball as aggressively as they did over the weekend, we'll have 3+ fumbles a game.

I was thinking the same thing the other day about how few fumbles we have had this year, but was afraid to say anything about it because I didn’t want to jinx us, but now the cat’s out of the bag.

I recall the first long touchdown pass of the season during the Syracuse game. The defender was repeatedly punching the ball as Braylon Staley was heading towards the end zone and I was impressed that Staley was able to hold on to it.

Our receivers and running backs seem to protect the ball well when they have possession of it. Now, if they can just be a little more sure handed with catching the ball.

I like what our defense has done on creating turnovers. Our turnovers have mostly been caused by our players mis handling the football. The turnovers caused by our defense have mostly been caused by our aggressive pursuit of ball carriers with crushing tackling. I like the way we attack the ball carrier.

I picked up on that as well. I think it’s worth noting if you put emphasis on that throughout the whole game, as long as the player doesn’t fumble they’re likely to pick up a couple more yards at the end. If you focus on stripping more than just getting them down.

We're terrible at run fits and pursuit angles, can't defend a jet sweep or screen. Forcing fumbles are the least of my concerns

That is why they practice ball protection drills as part of every practice. As stated earlier, those aggressive hand slaps have not caused our fumbles. Because other teams have fumbled because of it does not mean we will. It has happened every week and that is how we have caused most of our 7 forced fumbles. Quit coming up with reasons to wring your hands and gnashing your teeth. I really dont know how some of you dont have an ambulance service on speed dial during the game. LOTM unite!

I saw that on Texas trying to strip the Florida wide receiver. Texas stripper didn't strip and the strip attempt made him stumble and fall ( he could have just pushed receiver out of bounds) and the Florida receiver took it 20 more yards for a crushing TD.

I'll be content just to see wrapping up and solid tackling from our defense. We gotta learn to walk before we can run.

This was my exact thought when UGA went in for the tie score in regulation. The RB was carrying the ball loose and the UT defender could have easily reached in and dislodged it - but didn't. UF seems to always be good at this with UT being good at it every 5 years or so. Befuddling for sure.

I do appreciate trying for strips but there’s a fine line between going for strips/punch outs and fundamental tackling. I’ve seen many plays where the defenders will literally shuffle with the ball carrier trying to strip the ball and the offense is able to gain 3-5 extra yards because of it.
