Now that I’m familiar with Coach Dickeys story .

I just watched the Kiffin documentary on ESPN and it gave me a newfound respect for the guy with how he’s transformed his life over the last decade. We all make mistakes and he made a lot as a young coach, but Lane Kiffin at 50 is not the Lane Kiffin we saw from age 30-40. I encourage you to watch it for yourself if you haven’t already.

There are many who will read this and not like it, and if so, that’s your problem, but I’m rooting for him.
Time tends to heal most wounds. As for Dickey, I was here then late 20's) and a UT fan who got sick with each and ever loss. Dickey helped with that. I hated to see him go but for some reason I understood. All must remember, when he came back, good things started to happen in the A. Dept. that we still enjoy today.

After only having 2 coaches for 31 years it was a shock when Kiffin quit after 1. It felt very insulting and disrespectful.
This just doesn’t happen at the University of Tennessee, you stay forever as a coach.

You got me in a laughing fit over here. My daughter is looking at me and wondering if she needs to call the white coats to come snatch me up with a dog catchers net

I was a soph when this happened. Rumors actually started wks b4. Now bring in the famous "Archie Who" game where Ole Miss, with Archie Manning kicked our butt. Rumors of our HC going to FL had started and we played like crap. Archie had a great game against demoralized UT players. I think we were undefeated then. Not sure about that. It was a pitiful finish to what was a great beginning to the '69 season.

Here's how you rank the maturity and wisdom of Tennessee fans in relation to Kiffin:

10 maturity -- "I don't think about Kiffin unless I channel surf to an Ole Miss game. He's just someone else's coach these days."
10 wisdom -- "I like to keep a couple of bottles of French's mustard around, and a sleeve of golf balls in my jacket pocket. You know, just in case."

7 maturity -- "Kiffin sucks, but I don't fret about it. He's Ole Miss' problem. Well, and the co-eds of Oxford, Mississippi."
7 wisdom -- "If I saw Kiffin on the street, I'd walk right by. Not giving that fella the time of day."

5 maturity -- "Kiffin totally sucks, he can still go pound sand far as I'm concerned, hope he never finds success anywhere."
5 wisdom -- "I'd totally be up for seeing him come back as Heupel's offense coordinator, but he gotta keep a short leash on the dude."

0 wisdom, 0 maturity -- "I think he's a good dude now, I forgive him, I'd love him to come back to Tennessee (slurp slurp)"

~ ~ ~

Something like that. We're all over the spectrum, but I suspect the lion's share of us are somewhere between 5 and 7 maturity, along with 7 to 10 wisdom.

Go Vols!

Yup!

I always thought this by Siler (above) weeks after was a good explanation of the events.

On Kiffin

There was on a CBS story just after the USC move that's (link) is no longer available; but the writer quoted Hamilton as saying he asked Kiffin during the initial UT interview process if there was any job, he would leave UT for going forward and Kiffin told him just one... USC! Why UT then didn’t insert major USC buy-out protection in the final UT agreement; UTAD would have to answer? Bottom line if USC would have had to pay millions to get Kiffin away; they wouldn't have even picked up the phone. I'm sure others remember that story
Mike Hamilton was the WORST and most INCOMPETENT AD in UT history. But may he R.I.P.

I was familiar with it but never grasped the concept Kiffin emulated Dickey more or less.
Not even close. Kiffin tried to destroy the recruiting class as he snuck out literally in the dark of night. The only real negative thing I have about him leaving is the fact that he left Bill Battle in charge. BB proceeded to destroy the program nearly as badly as Beldar did.

I use to despise Kiffin because he left the Vols but reading about Dickey who I happen to admire and respect left the Vols went to Florida came back athletic director for the Vols. So pretty similar stories I suppose so I gotta back off Kiffin hate now.
Continuing the analogy, Kiffin returns as AD to replace Danny? Nah….

So people aren't allowed to "not like this"?
They are supposed to or even required to agree with you??
Interesting

Cue the triggered emotional response......

Dickey leaving when/how he did was one of the worst things to ever happen to UT
and one of the best for Bama. Dickey had it rolling for the Vols and had his foot
firmly on Bama’neck.
Yep. I feel confident Dickey would have won a national championship if he had stayed at tenn. He had the program rolling. i don’t believe the whole story has ever truly been told.

oldtimers from that era hated Dickey for leaving UT for Florida a few days after losing to them in a bowl game. Doug totally rebuilt Tennessee following the single wing offense era and did an amazing job. I forgave Doug after his son Daryl led the 1985 Vols to the Sugar Bowl championship over Miami.

Anyway old Bob Woodruff passed over John Majors and hired Billy Boy Scout Battle to succeed Dickey which was incredibly stupid. Yes stupid beyond comprehension then and now. Dickey became a decent AD after failing miserably at Florida. Dickey left a loaded program at Tennessee and he may have been one of the great 20th century coaches if he had stayed at UT. Bill Battle had absolutely no business being hired or even interviewed to succeed Dickey. It would be like the Vol current tight ends coach - Abeln? - being hired to succeed Heupel.

By the way Lane Kiffin sucks.

Had CDD and 5 assistants stayed, the 1970 team was loaded, so much so a 28-year-old, took them to 11-1...!!!

Had Dickey stayed you might have seen UT open 1970 with a September 12th rematch against Archie and Ole Miss on TV in Knoxville as their new 11 game. Ole Miss was on paper approving the game. Win that one and UT has their sixth conference game and ties LSU for the conference title that year (as opposed to losing it... LSU finished at 5-1, UT 4-1).

Many have said, that 38-0 loss rematch nine months later might have been the craziest ticket/game in Neyland History and tying for the SEC might have put UT in the Orange Bowl vs. Nebraska (LSU went) for the 1970 National Title. As it happened, Woodruff weeks later scheduled a non-conference 11th game Dec 5th against 6-5 UCLA squad costing UT a share of the conference title; UT then won a meaningless Sugar Bowl game as SEC runner-up, a game no one nationally watched because it was televised exactly opposite the Texas-Notre Dame Cotton rematch and UT thus remained 4th in the final 1970 poll voting.

Dickey was a decent AD in ways but he had his faults. He didn't do the basketball program any favors other than TBA. Shaklee Shakes anyone?

Dickey also got rid of the wrestling team. I guess that was inevitable since I don't see SEC wrestling any more. While at UT I heard about t-shirts that were made saying "UT Wrestling got Dickeyed".

The difference was Dickey went back to his alma mater, and he had already been here 6 years.
The difference was Dickey stabbed the Vol program in the back on the way out announcing he was leaving as he was coaching the Vols in a bowl game against Florida. We lost. Imagine that. Personally many forgave Dickey and for what he did as AD, but I'd not spit on him if he was on fire.

69 and 70 teams could have easily won it all. I think had Dickey been the coach in 70 Tennessee would have won it. The rumors of him leaving in 69 had to affect that team as well with the rumors swirling in mid season. Tennessee had some good teams on the mid late 60’s. GBO

I understand a guy going "home". Majors did it and Dickey did it., but they did it with class and humility.
