'26 TN S Joel Wyatt (Tennessee commit)

High school football in America is a beautiful thing. I’m a huge fan and am actually getting involved in my own capacity.

ABMS plays the #2 ranked team from Illinois today in Mt. Carmel.

Tupelo beat Brandon MS by 3 TDs I think. Brandon was a 12 win team last year.
Oakland DEMOLISHED one of the top teams from West Virginia last night 74-0.

CPA bounced back against Pearl. They’re a good team, but damn the athletic director or whoever gave them this ridiculous schedule. Their new Private School classification was enough moving up to play Baylor and McCallie. But then to add Oakland, Tupelo and ABMS.
How did Wyatt do for Oakland?

TSSAA fault. CPA always schedules big non region schedule to give their fans these big games, primarily around the mid-state. But TSSAA installed a rule specifically to move them up to top private school class and then organized the rankings terrible to make sure they can get their precious Nashville teams some good seeding so CPA has to play all the top private school teams every year now aside from BGA.

EAST: Baylor, McCallie, CPA, Knoxville Catholic, Ensworth, and MBA
WEST: Brentwood Academy, Lipscomb Academy, Father Ryan, Briarcrest, Christian Brothers, MUS

You could argue there are five teams in the east better than west #1, and all six east better than west #2... wouldn't be crazy to say

Wyatt dropped to No. 122 nationally in the new Rivals 300 rankings but FWIW is now listed exclusively as a safety prospect.

He's ranked No. 12 at the position.

^^^ LMAO. We have Wyatt and Combay coming as freshmen next year at Safety. Apparently none of the 6DBs in the 2025 class are gonna play this year (what happened to Merritt who flashed in camp?) We better grab 2 Safeties from the portal that can play right away or we will have a Safety problem for the SIXTH straight year. For whatever reason we have been unable to buy an SEC caliber Safety every year. Maybe we finally hit on 1 this year. Sure hope so. Its the only position that this staff hasnt done an exceptional job with.

We just don't seem to value that position whatsoever when it comes to NIL.

Wouldn't pay up for Jakobe Thomas (who has looked really good for Miami this year) and lost out on Shady Hayward to Florida.

I get that’s not a position you break the bank on but we have almost completely neglected it.

Merritt and Lewis are freshmen. Walton is the freshman they seem highest on at Safety and he’ll be good, just needs time to develop. Guessing Merritt ends up at CB. Lewis likely at S or Star.

Not sure why you’re asking “what happened to” about true freshmen. They’ll be fine. But yes, I’d get a portal safety for next year. Probably a Star too, assuming Boo leaves. We do get Jourdan Thomas back, though. If he’s back to 100% (might be a big if), he will help at Safety or Star.

The freshman DBs have all appeared in 4 or more games. I think as a class they are already showing they could have good prospects. They went to Redmond replacing Gibson. I think the '25 DB class is stronger than '24

I wasnt asking "what happened to" as if a freshman player wasnt reaching their potential...the 6 of them are freshmen. I was asking "what happened to" because Safety play has been an absolute disaster against the pass AND the run. Terrible angles all game long from both starting Safeties. We knew Turrentine wasn't starting SEC material 2 years ago. He lead the team in missed tackles last year. He got beat badly for another long TD against MSU...we just got lucky and the WR dropped it. Yet the coaches act like he just cannot come off the field and he plays almost every single snap on defense. Farooq hasnt looked great either but hes just a sophomore so it might get better. If we dont have anyone out of the ~15 or more DBs on our roster that can take 10 or 15 snaps per game from Turrentine then we are gonna get torched and gashed all season because he is worn out from too many snaps. Walton got his first snaps Saturday vs MSU right? I know Beasley spells Farooq sometimes too and he has struggled. We should have paid Jacobe Thomas or somebody to play Safety IMO. Its the only position on the field we have missed on every year, and I love this staff. Maybe I am too hard on the Safeties because thats what I played through HS so my eyes are drawn to them...and I know when they take bad angles or blow coverage. Some of the angles they take would get you benched in HS though IMO. Turrentine is playing way too many snaps to be effective.

No you’re not too hard on the safeties. That’s accurate. It’s been the one position on the team under Heupel that just hasn’t gotten better. I hope this offseason that a) we’ll attack quality safeties in the portal and b) bring in a coach who can teach quality safety play. Doesn’t have to be an on-field coach. Could be an analyst, like we did with Litrell.

They need to bring in not one but two bigtime safeties from portal.

Poteat and Merritt will become good players. Lewis too, but all 3 of them are probably CB/Star players.

Farooq is pretty good actually but we need 4 safeties, minimum.

Get two bigtime guys in the portal and let 4th emerge from the 2026 class or already on roster.

This is why I’m tired of the DBs Willy has been signing that we always get told could play corner or safety. They aren’t hitting on them, I never cared for having both starting safeties being 180lbs. Walton has been playing football a total of three years, he’s more athlete than football player right now. Another development of course. Apparently Slaughter wasn’t any good either because he can’t play at Colorado. It’s time to allocate some money for at least one top100 recruit at safety each class. Enough of the projects.

Saw a scout say earlier today that OSU would be just as good if you replaced Caleb Downs with an average player but that they would not be nearly as good if you did the same with Arvell Reese. Sort of illustrates why we spend more on linebacker than safety.

Willie isn’t the Safeties Coach. He’s the Cornerback Coach. Tim Banks is the Safeties Coach.
