Premiere League & World Soccer Thread

This was the point where the award became kind of a joke to me. Messi winning it more or less for his performance over a few weeks at the WC but playing his club football at Inter Miami while Salah clearly had the best club season playing in England was ridiculous.
Wrong season. Messi stole that from Haaland, not Salah. If anything, Modric stole it from Salah following his 2017/2018 season. But let's be honest, Lewandowski deserved that one in 2018. That is my second biggest snub ever.

What Bournemouth is doing in the Prem is worth watching. If they can stay healthy, they could pull it off. They have a spirit that reminds me of Leicester 15/16 season. Semenyo looks unstoppable. Kluivert is a special talent. They have the defense to stay in any game. They are playing a beautiful brand of football. Watch out. This seems different than Forest last year and Brighton 22/23. This team has star power and determination.

Doubt they finish Top 4 (unless they miraculously stay healthy all season and catch some breaks) but I think they can finish in the European spots. They can give anyone trouble on their day.

Semenyo is the real deal though. He abused Porro in our game earlier this season. I really wanted him as a Son replacement this summer but we whiffed on Gibbs-White and Eze which took us longer than it should to bring in a 10.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Weren't they in the CL places most of the time up till Christmas last year? I agree that they look good, and could realistically end up in Europe next year, but winning the title seems farfetched. If they stay healthy who knows, because that first XI is impressive, but they may ultimately be undone by a lack of depth if they have any injuries. Also, not playing in Europe this season gives them a leg up on everyone else at the top of the table.

Meanwhile, last season's feel good story of Forest has gone completely off the rails. Lost several players over the summer and now not prepared to fight on two fronts, their owner appears to be a moron, already sacked the manager that took got them to Europe, and may be about to sack another one. Also not helped by the fact that the three promoted teams this year don't look to be going straight back down by default. I doubt this is going to be another one of those years where a team can stay up with <30 pts.

That is another reason they are poised; they were solid last year. Here is why I think they have a chance IF they can stay healthy. It's a down league at the top. No one looks unbeatable. Defensive issues for City and Liverpool (I still cannot believe Pep thought he could go another season without a RB). The remaining contenders cannot score enough. And yes, while Bournemouth competed early in the season, they didn't have the quality they possess now.

Truffert might be better than Kerkez and for 1/3rd the price. Petrovic is an upgrade in goal. Diakite is more than holding his own to replace Huijsen. They were smart to bring in Doak as a sub from Liverpool. They only perhaps missed on Amine Adii as he hasn't played much. Everyone else is contributing and at a high level.

I suppose what I like most about them is they can beat you whichever way they need to. Possession, Counter, Hybrid, Flair, Tough, it doesn't matter. This is a team built to win and with finances to back them in the next window if they see fit.

Glad to see Everton aren’t the only club thinking like that. We’ve known Seamus Coleman was getting up there in age for 6-7 years now and still haven’t signed a permanent replacement. I guess Nathan Patterson was originally supposed to be that, but he’s long since shown he’s some combination of made of glass/not good enough.

So far our strategy has been to deputize a CM or CB into the role, get what little we still can out of Coleman, or sign an EVEN OLDER player in Ashley Young.

Obviously, it's dumb for me or anyone else to question Guardiola, but our only true fullback is Ait-Nouri and for the first time in his career, he's injured. Rico Lewis is a midfielder that we're playing at left-back. We also continue to use attacking mids (O'Reilly, Lewis, Nunes) or central defenders (Kusavaov, Gvardiol, Ake) out there. We basically play every game with two defenders and the rest attackers which would be fine if they were master distributors (but they are dribblers). We are better than last year, but same problems remain.

I think the least flawed team in the league is Arsenal, but they suddenly stopped scoring.

What a game.

I told my wife as we were nearing extra time that this game wouldn’t end in a draw. Both teams kept pushing and it was entertaining to watch. Happy for Caicedo. What a screamer of a goal that was but he bossed the midfield all day. That had to feel good for him. Great cameo from Lavia too once he came in.

Ref in Newcastle Forest game has been awful. Crazy how Bruno and Joelinton never get carded despite committing several fouls every game, then when they get touched they roll on the ground and it’s eaten up by the ref.
