Add this guy to the recruiting board

VQ

Tennessee is taking a long look at UCLA interior offensive line commit Micah Smith. We could see him taking a visit to Tennessee here soon. Elarbee will be in Vero Beach to watch him play Friday night.

Callahan had this a bit earlier in the evening.

We were actually in pretty deep with him before he made what looks to have been a at least somewhat surprising commitment to UCLA. We made his Top 6 and Ellerbe visited his school twice, once in January (with Heupel) and once in April after he’d visited for a spring practice during a “multi day visit”.

Callahan said "I think there’s a real chance he will visit the Vols in the coming weeks. He’s obviously keeping his options open after the midseason coaching change at UCLA. Smith visited Ole Miss last weekend."

He's very highly thought of and was sought after by both OSU and UGA along with the Vols and Illinois (BB knows OL). Definitely one to watch IMO.

I'd be good with 2-3 more DT/SDE type DL. Agree with another IOL, RB, and TE. Also wouldn't turn away a highly rated CB or Safety.
Agree on the DL; although, as I keep saying, RG usually pulls a big fish out of his hat down the stretch. Campbell committed in December last year. Hobbs committed in November two years ago; and, he flipped Tyre West in December in '22.

Maybe a good chance of flipping OL from UCLA. That would cap the best OL class we've signed in awhile.

Go portal for TE and RB? I'm cool with it. Yeah, I would like to sign someone out of HS, especially if we can flip Latimer; but, we've been very good in the portal with both positions.

I would love to get in on Bralan Womack. I could be wrong, but it's hard for me to see him sticking with Auburn, especially if they can't get it turned around.

My opinion on RB, if we sign one, it should be one from HS who doesn't necessarily play next year. Otherwise, I don't necessarily see the need for one. Bishop and Lewis should return, and Morris and Baker should be ready to contribute. So, unless someone leaves, we shouldn't need someone to contribute immediately. But getting one we can develop from HS reinforces future depth.

As for TE, this is Kitselman's last year. Ethan Davis has never lived up to his potential. Not sure he ever will. Hoping Van Dorselaer and Brame are ready to go next year. I could see where it would be beneficial to take both a HS TE and a portal TE. One to develop, and one for depth.

Still believe that DL remains the biggest priority through both HS and portal recruiting. But if there are any playmaking secondary in the portal, we should at least kick the tires. It would be awesome to have better safety play.

I also wonder what Heup will do at QB. Will he give the ball to Merk or GMac? Will he give it to Brandon? Or does he look for someone in the portal?

Like all of this.

I think it benefits Merk to stay. Compete next year with a RS Fr and True Fr, after being in the system going on 3 years. If he can't win the job, he's not winning it anywhere else, besides 2nd/3rd tier schools. He can then transfer somewhere smaller for one year. Hopefully win the job there, have a good year, then who knows. If he cant win the job for a season at an App St or a Western KY, the NFL is not calling anyway.

He's probably gone, though...and, in that case I think we have to look in the portal. I dont want to go into a season with just 2 QBs, both Freshmen. Go find another Joey to compete next year.

Good post. Agree with pretty much all this.

Will add that JVD is ready NOW at TE. He threw some of the most important and devastating blocks in the game vs MSU including the block that sprung Bishop for the 25yd TD in Overtime. He is dirtnapping DBs and holding his own vs SEC LBs as a freshman. Hes always been a good pass catcher. Thats why he had 3TDs in the OnW game. I love Kitselman and he has played his way into the NFL here at UT...but even Hubbs and the VQ gang are saying JVD needs more playing time. Hes getting about 12 to 15 snaps a game mostly in 12 personnel...while Kitselman is playing 60+ snaps per game. We are wearing Kits out. Need to share the load with JVD. Brahme and Davis are never gonna play if they can't block better. Brahme probably pans out...but Davis has been a "next year" guy for his entire career and still isnt ready.
