When the British lost all those ships in Falklands, the USN decided to build with steel as the British ships superstructures melted, and prior to that, the USS Belknap suffered a catostrophic fire.
Athough it is crazy, modern ships, even steel, are tin can, with a Little Kevlar armor around vital spaces.
