One of the farmers’ markets which I frequent consistently stocks butter peas in their frozen foods section.
Bless that farmer. In my book of food favorites, this is #1. If you, or anyone, hasn't tried them, you have to when it comes to beans/peas. But, I'm 60 now and I still have to eat them my granddads way or it's not right. They are the best anyway, but I won't eat them without dressing them up his way.
1. Have to cooked tender. Not necessary to slightly mash like we do pintos or white beans to where the starch makes them slightly thickened, but ok if you do.
2. Must lightly salt and pepper on the plate.
3. Small dollop of mayo
4. Topped with sweet red pepper relish. I also sub Apple Barn red pepper & apple relish or my homemade yellow summer squash relish. But one of the 3 is a must.
5. Enjoy immensely.
In a pinch, Margaret Holmes brand does have canned Butter Peas. Few stores carry them even though they stock the brand in many things. Food Lion always has them though it seems. And they always have the Pict Sweet frozen, which is the only brand I do find them frozen. Again always Food Lion and rarely anywhere else. They may be a little seasonal, so when they hit the shelves I'll buy 6-8 cans at a time for when I don't have an hour to simmer the frozen ones.
