Academic Rankings

TN has always been hampered by their freshman retention rate, it used to be absolutely awful but has improved. This year only 11% of the current freshman class was accepted, a record. It shows how difficult it is to get in now, especially in certain areas. Hopefully these kids stay and not leave like they did in previous years.

TN has one of the best business schools around, and some other programs are nationally ranked as well. Overall the biggest drag is Freshman retention, that’s why we sit at 102 with a top ranked business school.

Good grades don't always equal success later in life and less than good grades don't always equal failure in life. So you are kind of wrong

Wow… Good grades are a very good indicator of a person’s work ethic, which plays a very enormous role in a person’s success or failure in life.

So, you wisely used the word “always” because “always” rarely happens in life.

Can we agree on this? Good grades more often than not equals success later in life.

A lot of STEM fields are mainly rote memorization.

Bruh, I can only speak for engineering here-

But the lions share of my exams were open book open notes open whatever.

What exactly is there to memorize other than perhaps the numerical equivalent of Pi to 2 or 3 digits?

Hell, I relished exams that it was possible to do well simply my memorizing the material. Easy peasy. I took a bunch of history, etc classes that were like that simply to make my GPA more respectable ha ha.

When you consider that we have 50 states and numerous colleges, 102 is not as bad as it sounds.

WTS, I think Top-50 would be an appropriate goal.

Another thing that hurts most state schools is the requirement that so many percent of the incoming class be in-state applicants. It’s an absolutely necessary rule because the state university should serve the citizens of the state. But, it drags down the GPA and Test Scores of the incoming classes.

Nailed it !!!
At work we have Engineers that graduated from Rose-Hulman (Top 10 engineering school consistently and private school) and Engineers that graduated from Indiana State University (public school located less than a mile away from R-H).

They all make the same money, have the same benefits, and have the same advancement opportunities, but some of them paid 3X more for the degree.
Engineering is one of the majors where it matters least where you go to school. Any ABET accredited undergraduate institution is basically giving you the same degree.

It’s better to remain silent when you obviously have no idea what you’re talking about.

Calculating energy in thermodynamics is not “rote memorization.”

Nor is balancing a chemical reaction.

Or the heat required for or expended by a chemical reaction.

We can go on and on.

There is a reason why STEM majors get paid the most.

Balance a chemical reaction? Memorize the steps and go to it.
My point is that STEM major fields aren't that different from many other majors in requiring thought to master.
