we have two bad seasons a few years a apart out of maybe 3-4 bad seasons in 20-25 years and all of a sudden we're treated as a joke of a program and the subject of ridicule from fans of teams that aren't even rivals or in the same conference

if we have a good season or if we're somehow beat florida, the amount of smack i'm gonna talk is going to be epic and i'm gonna talk it to eeeeevrybody

I've always thought my fellow Tennessee fans took themselves too seriously. If you think about it, that is the kind of thing we mock Kentucky, Alabama , Georgia, and Florida for.

I do not think it will happen. But will you settle for beating down WKU, UCLA, Ohio, Auburn Memphis and Vanderbilt with wins over South Carolina, Kentucky and Georgia?

I think that is really possible. I think we play Florida and Alabama tough and I think Ole Miss is a toss up.

I will gloat over that especially to the UK fans, SC fans and Vandy fans who have forgotten their place below us.

Michigan still hears about that Appy State game.

Also, RR wasn't making comments to keep Michigan in the lime light, either. I have no issue with what Kiffin did, but part of the effects it is the negative hangover from having the spotlight put on our previous season, and the recent domination by our rivals.

Don't feel disrespected at all. I don't have the records in front of me but we haven't won a conference championship since 98 (I think). Everyone has a different opinion on what constitutes a good year but our record the last ten years agaist top 25 teams is horrible. No matter what the criteria our body of work is no better then average at best over the last ten years.

I think a lot of it is the WAY that UT has lost some of the games in recent years. As BPV said in another thread a little earlier today (and I have to give him credit), this season, and especially given that its under new management, is about process and re-focusing and to some degree re-branding Tennessee football. It won't happen overnight.

A .500 record in conference for most of a decade will do that to you. Losing to almost every top 10 team you play will do that to you. Going a decade without playing in a major bowl or being mentioned in the national title conversation will do that to you. The program is being dismissed because it has become irrelevant. Until we prove otherwise, we are has-beens.

Kiffin may end up being a blowhard and a failure, but that's why it was so important to hire a publicity hound who was going to get us back in the national conversation. A school with a crappy recruiting base like ours cannot afford to fall off the radar like we were.

If by some miracle, and I do mean miracle, we were to beat Florida I would spend the next 12 months talking sh** to whoever would listen. Too bad it's not gonna happen.

For allowing Fulmer to remain employed after the 2005 clown show, our fanbase and program deserve every last bit of ridicule it is receiving.

Michigan is not a rival. I suspect that Ohio State fans are "clowning" on them.

...and from the mouth of a gator does not make it less factual.

Respect has to do with consistency in winning and being a difficult team to play against.

Ask yourself this question... for the last couple of years who gets "amped up" to play the VOLS? It isn't the big boys of football.

RESPECT is never agiven, it is EARNED and I think this season will start that process, emphasis on "start."

I don't remember who said this but it fits our program this year, "It isn't the beginning of the end, but it could be (by 1/1/10) the end of the beginning."

GO VOLS

10 years of near misses and mediocrity will do that to the image of a program.

Spot on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Although further back from ten years, I'm still p.....off about the lead we had against florida with Manning as a Sophmore I think. We totally imploded the second half. Never have gotten over that one. I'm pretty sure we won out after that game.

Yeah that was 95, i remember it well. We did win out and florida got treated like redheaded step children by nebraska.
