Everyone consistently spoke of how Tess Darby could not play defense in this system, yet if you watch the video, Tess was in on many many many of the 10 second backcourt violations shown in the video above. Couple that with only 7 T/o's in 33 games and that is consistency that I hope to see out of some players this year.this was super impressive considering last years roster
not all of the players necessarily fit the system but they sure as hell were all bought in
really enjoyed watching this, nice reminder of how caldwell's approach to basketball is just different and fun
they forced a 5-second, a 10-second and shot clock violation all in the same game against mizzou
i feel what this years team may lack in 3pt shooting can possibly be subsidized
by creating more points off of turnovers and scoring way more in transition opportunities
defensively, this years team not only has the size to matchup with bigger teams
but they also have the personnel to play effective small ball defense against bigger teams ala okc thunder
IMO, Tess Darby had her overall best season as a Lady Vol while playing in a system that many would have predicted could have forced her into a permanent seat at the end of the bench. Tess didn't have a lot of quickness, but she was one of the most court-savvy players we ever had at Tennessee. She definitely played above expectations, and with her being a proud native Tennessean, she always made ME feel proud she was a Lady Vol and stuck to it.Everyone consistently spoke of how Tess Darby could not play defense in this system, yet if you watch the video, Tess was in on many many many of the 10 second backcourt violations shown in the video above. And don't forget her 228 threes, 5th best in LVs' history, as well as appearing in 146 games, tied for 2nd with Big Nick, trailing only Ms. Holdsclaw. I would say she played above expectations without a doubt. Tess was solid. Yes. More quickness and athleticism should make our D much better in every aspectOverall we were great on defense in some areas and in others not so good. We fouled to much losing to many points at the free throw line. We really suffered with the trap didn't play it well and gave up a lot of easy baskets. I am thinking that that is where we see the most improvement of the team and I expect the trap to be a lot bigger weapon in creating turnovers than it was last season.
If someone has the chops & time to do it, an informative preseason thread would be to post what types of defense our new transfers learned and played at their previous schools.Yes. More quickness and athleticism should make our D much better in every aspect
our opening pre-season game with Columbus State is next WednesdayIf someone has the chops & time to do it, an informative preseason thread would be to post what types of defense our new transfers learned and played at their previous schools.
It would also provide a means for us to worry needlessly at a higher level of understanding.![]()
I loved that about our men's teams under Bruce Pearl! One thing I wish our defense got more of was 5-second violations and forcing teams to call timeouts early in the game. To that point, I wish we would sometimes put double teams on the inbounding girl -- I honestly don't understand why we value double teaming when the ball is on the floor, but not at all when the ball is in the hands of a girl who can barely move. Seems to me that even if it's not something that you *always* do, that you'd at least mix it in to throw off the inbounder and induce either a panic timeout or a terrible pass. And maybe something to go to against teams where the press isn't generating much stress on the opponent backcourt players.
With everybody being a one year player we have as many returnees as most teams. Spearman seemed to imply that it was a rough start for the freshmen, but they are getting better quickly. I expect us to see all eight players return next season so that will be a couple more than this season. We'll keep locking our players in expect one day we'll get that up to 11 or twelve returnees in a season.I loved that about our men's teams under Bruce Pearl!
My guess is that right now it's a time-needed-to-install issue for the staff. CKC has said that they're already behind in what they wanted to have installed, and that despite having several experienced players to multiply the coaching. We are upgraded in many ways, but we still have 8 players who are brand new to the system.
I can't wait to see how we play when we finally get to having +11 players with at least a full season's experience!
I guess this is the downside of portal era basketball. On the better teams we'll see more adept rosters, but coaches will have to leave more of their tricks & goodies in the file cabinet.
