Jimmie Kimmel Show gone !

Many from the right are trying to excuse this by implying that Jimmy Kimmel Live! wasn't doing well in the Nielsen ratings .... I haven't cared enough to fact check this, but I will now .... I'll be back in a few with a link to ratings data.
Nobody cares lol but if you need a task to do, ask your gf or wife, I’m sure she has something in mind.. that was mean, sorry, but younger people don’t watch late night tv.. they don’t watch it at all… and older people go to bed early, it’s kind of a dying thing, no matter what the numbers say.. like Hooters and malls

I never watched his show and I wouldn't care about it's cancellation, if it was because of poor quality and low ratings, but it clearly wasn't that.

The show was cancelled in response to a threat from the FCC Chair to pull ABC's broadcasting license. We know this threat was made, because FCC Chair, Brendan Carr, was intelligent enough to make it public.

As far as the quality of Kimmel's comedy is concerned, I haven't seen enough of him to form an opinion .... but ABC obviously disagrees with you, because in addition to keeping his show on their network for so long, they also hired him to host The Academy Awards 4 times in the last 9 years.

It's about money. Period.

Wow, I didn't realize the Federal government had shut down Kimmel. I was under the impression that his employer canceled the show (supposedly) due to his insensitive/ inaccurate remarks regarding the assassination of a US citizen and activist beloved by a huge segment of the population.

Does Chuck know how businesses work?

Too many people are implying that the ratings for Jimmy Kimmel Live! were low, for me to believe that nobody cares. It obviously matters or there wouldn't be so many people talking about it.

Here are the Nielsen ratings in multiple demographics for the most recently completed quarter. That was Q2 (April, May and June) of 2025.

Among all viewers, Jimmy Kimmel Live! was 2nd in his time slot among late night talk and down 3% from Q1. In the 18-49 demographic, Jimmy Kimmel Live was 1st, and up 24% from Q1.

Can you imagine Ronald Reagan taking it personally when Johnny Carson made fun of him, as he often did? Or George Bush getting angry when Dana Carvey spoofed him? Trump is a strange man, and these are strange times.

Well, I will agree with strange times aspect.. my preference would be going back to the 1990s, personally lol

Are you aware of the threat that ABC/Disney were under from the FCC? The threat that the FCC's Chairman, Brendan Carr, so foolishly made public?

220,000 viewers (in the key demo) ain't great numbers. Interestingly, Gutfeld had higher numbers in this demo (highest actually).

Can somebody explain what is so controversial about the quote (that I guess didn't even air)? People are offended that he said MAGA was desperate to pin it on the opposition? What??? Am I missing a part of the quote?

I get why people didn't like that, but why does this require FCC pressure? This is insanity.

Based on these numbers, it's hard to make an argument that the show was cancelled because of the Nielsen ratings. Especially the timing of the cancellation. We are so close to the end of Q3 on September 30th, that it doesn't make sense to argue that ratings were the driving force behind this decision. If it was ratings, Disney/ABC would have waited to see what the show's completed standings in Q3 were. The show was 22 years old. You don't cancel such a long running show on a whim. They were under government pressure to cancel it.

my guess is that offense was he was attacking Trump voters by saying they were hypocrites for not recognizing that the shooter was MAGA (incorrectly) and ABC viewers who are Trump voters probably went all Monty and voiced their plans to stop watching ABC content - likely in some affliate areas with a big enough chunk of trump voters.

never said it was but the numbers dont help

I don't agree that it was government pressure - more likely pressure in some markets from ABC viewers who didn't like Kimmel calling them hypocrites (wrongly).

Disney/ABC could come out and tell us if it was government pressure - bet they won't.

Not by you .... I get it.

However, you don't keep a late night talk show running on a major network for 22 years, with that same major network also hiring you to host their signature arts & entertainment event 4 times (Jimmy Kimmel also hosted The Academy Awards in 2017, 2018, 2023 and 2024), unless you are doing well in the Nielsen ratings.

This is a country with a population of 340 million people. You don't speak for everyone.

He gone

FCC had no business commenting

'member there was this tv sitcom called roseanne... pretty popular show once upon a time
Did the FCC ever weigh in on Roseanne's comments?

That's the perfect example of the way this is supposed to work. She said something her employer didn't like. She got fired. FCC didn't apply pressure or comment. Bc they shouldn't

The numbers are not bad at all for late night talk in his time slot. And from Q1 to Q2, Jimmy Kimmel Live! gained 24% in the coveted 18-49 demographic.

Late night talk will never get the kind of viewership that Carson, Leno and Letterman used to pull. It's a different time for television in the age of streaming services. We literally have thousands more viewing options.
