While visiting with my grandson and son after school today I was told my 8 year old grandson cried when the Vols lost against Georgia. I tried to explain to him after following the Vols for so many years , you learn how to absorb and become numb to the feeling of a loss, That simple. I don’t try to get too carried away with it though it’s just makes the big wins more enjoyable.

Being a Vol fan is being a glutton for punishment.

9 outta 10 times we come so close but fall just a bit short of glory.

Being a Tennessee fan is like going through life with the constant threat of a brutal kick to the naynays coming at any moment.

It does however make those brief moments such as Alabama 2022 the most beautiful feeling in the world

Any young people who grow up as Tennessee fans in this modern era have a tip of the hat from me. I came into this in the 80s and 90s. I reached "buy my own ticket" age during the 1990s. Talk about setting poor expectations, right? But for these young people? What expectations can they even have? Dooley, Brickboy, the constant ineptitude. I can't imagine what it would be like to have grown into one's Vols fandom from 2010-2020, and even now - it's not as if Tennessee appears dominant year to year.

All these young people know is that their support of the Vols brings (mostly) suffering and heartbreak. Again, tip of the hat. If you picked up the orange and white during the modern era, you're real ones, young Vols. And that includes your grandson! Tip of the hat. I hope it gets better for him - and for all of us - soon.

I admit that I was cursing when Gilbert missed the FG at the end of regulation. When we lost in OT, I wasn't happy. I just was like, "It figures." I have been a Vols fan for over 30 years. It happens so much that we get so close in a big game to come up short, I don't get upset anymore. However, I used to get really angry and frustrated when we'd lose.

26 years ago, when we were defending our National Championship from the year before, the Vols went down to The Swamp to play Florida. I had to work that night and brought my radio with me. I would give the bosses and some of my co-workers' updates as I would listen to the game while working. I remember when we had the ball late in the fourth quarter and Tee Martin threw an interception to Alex Brown, and it'd be the ball game.

I was yelling and cursing. And the next thing I knew, I threw my radio against the wall. One of my bosses asked me how the game was going, and I told him that we were down 2 and Martin threw an interception. Then he asked me to keep him up on the game. I told him I could not, and he asked me why. When I told him I threw my radio against the wall and broke it, he asked me how the hell would he know the final score of the game. I told him, "Beats me, guess you can find out on ESPN when you get home" and then walked off.
